    Great episode. Here in Italy, Pennyroyal is known mostly as Menta Romana and is used to flavour a lot of string tasting dishes like lamb and tripe and sometimes is used in panzanella, a type of stale bread and tomato salad popular in central Italy. I am compiling a list of wild greens for foraging and planned to include it but knowing its toxicity now I will likely include it with. huge caveat.

    I had never given it much thought before, but I never realized that everyday communities have such a wide variety of toxic/poisonous and even dangerous plants. We live with these plants and have had no idea of their potentially dangerous natures and histories until you unlocked their secrets! They obviously don't jump out and reel you in, but it is really amazing that just everyday garden plants, have very controversial histories and reputations - and still, some have the ability to "take someone out!" Quite fascinating...

    I doubt it's all that poisonous. I've eaten a bunch of fruit from a lavender tree without knowing what it is and didn't feel a thing. It's likely that only the seed is poisonous as a lot of seeds are but I imagine you'd need to eat a huge amount of fruit to be in any danger

  • @a.e.r.9898

    um actually no, it's not true that we don't know what the toxin is. And it's not a "cocktail" of toxins. Last year, in September 2020, a paper was published where they investigated the toxin responsible and found a new class of neurotoxins that they named gympietides, which have a similar structure to the toxins of spiders and cone snails. The paper even explained the mechanism that these neurotoxins use to alter our sensory neurons and cause long-term pain. I'm surprised you didn't find this in your research since it was published last year lol

    • @bethanyveugen2709
      @bethanyveugen2709 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the clarification! I've just done a cursory glance into gympietides and can see they are the first of this kind of channel modulator in plants which is super exciting! Would you be able to provide the paper you read, where you found it may be helpful to my future videos.

    I believe in the past many women in the countryside had a sort of medical knowledge that was ignored by men and that was what men and the church called witchcraft. They had the fear to lose their power. Thanks for your videos, I really appreciate them!

      I agree, there was and is so much stigma around a healing woman or a woman high in knowledge of herbs and medicine that they were considered a threat.

    We had several Datura plants in SE QLD, in the 1980's, but at the time, never realised it was poisonous, until after I had several mature plants! Having a young child at the time, it was decided that although it was an attractive plant, it was too greater a risk to have plant s like this around a curious child. I was wondering when you were going to get to this plant! Definitely much more information than I ever knew about it, after watching this.
