มุมมอง 4059 หลายเดือนก่อน
A short video exploring the Mechanical Art & Design museum in Stratford-upon-Avon. Shot off-the-cuff on a phone without any prior planning, the film features a small selection of some of the sights and sounds from the thoroughly engaging displays of kinetic sculpture and ingenious automata, housed in a building in Henley Street in the centre of the town. With the addition of some electronic sou...
Tape Loop Making
มุมมอง 20310 หลายเดือนก่อน
Splicing magnetic tape to make a loop is demonstrated visually in four minutes without further explanation or narration, and with tape loops providing the soundtrack. For a specialised day spent working with reel to reel tape loops, synthetic sound on 16mm film, building an electronics kit, and creatively soldering a walkie-talkie circuit, the Analogue Sound Workshop runs at Ian Helliwell's fla...

Eltons Bins (excerpt)
มุมมอง 126ปีที่แล้ว
Made from deteriorated standard 8mm found home movie material, Eltons Bins involves footage shot in the 1960s in and around a trade fair. Now a largely forgotten British company in the waste disposal sector, the featured firm's products are on display until the effects of emulsion degradation take hold. The soundtrack was created using reel to reel tape loops and Hellitron tone generators.
Picture Invasion (excerpt)
มุมมอง 74ปีที่แล้ว
From a substantial batch of standard 8mm home movies showing significant emulsion deterioration, this film gathers together all the most interesting sequences into a split-screen montage. The scenes captured are typical amateur cine themes, largely of family members shot in domestic and holiday settings, but the degradation of the images through a natural process of decay, gives some striking r...

Three Found Footage Films with Electronic Music
May I ask why you used two pieces instead of one long piece ? Was it because they already had pieces recorded to them prior to cutting and no recording was taking place after the loop was made ?
I always use tape which already contains a recording - that's fundamental to the process for me. Serendipity is very important also, though the preparation of tapes containing random found sounds recorded decades ago, as well as radio and electronic sounds I've recorded months or years back, is the starting point. Having organised a set of tapes with potentially useful sounds, it's then a case of trial and error to see what might crop up when the loops are made - sometimes using a single piece of tape, other times joining different pieces to see if they work together. Getting the join just right is a crucial part - when it really works it can be very difficult to tell where the splice is. There wouldn't be much point in splicing a loop with nothing on it, only to then have to re-make the splice to get a newly recorded sequence with a perfect join. Tape loops much more than several seconds in duration, don't tend to work so well in my opinion, as the repetition and rhythm is usually lost or attenuated. When using found sounds, the tape machine that was originally used for recording, and the machine used for the loop playback, may also play a part depending on whether half track or quarter track machines are involved. Вы не поверите мне, но вы правда создали во мне заряд вдохновения и идей! Ну или как минимум заряд хорошего настроения. Ваше творчество великолепно!
If the translation is accurate, then thanks for your comments and enthusiasm. IH
This type of animation appeals to me very much because of the uniqueness of your work. Could you please tell me the name of the book mentioned?
Thanks. Yes, the book is called Make Moving Patterns. IH
Those drivers looked like they really enjoyed their job.
FANTASTIC !!!
That's some out there compositions Ian! Particularly liked Watchers & Watched.
???
Thank you for this. It's very historically valuable. Is it possible to see the whole film, please? I would happily pay!
Thanks. Feel free to drop me a line and might be able to work something out. Contact details on website: www.ianhelliwell.co.uk
Musics a bit kraftwerky lol I was expecting daleks lol😅
Awesome video, glad I finally found it 👍
I have the same splicing block
something so intriguing yet equally haunting about loop music like this
This is so cool! What kind of inks did you use?
Thanks! The ink was squeezed out of felt tip pens. IH
@@IanHelliwell-films Squeezed out? Did you crack them open and pour the ink on the film? I'm also looking for alternatives besides Dr. Martin Inks.
a very melodic piece of music, all things considered
Large Shark
Brilliant - some images are like a Gerhard Richter painting
Nice one, thanks! IH
Great! Great! Great! Fred Judd should be introduced to young university students in scientific disciplines. His work would make them passionate!
Nice one! I reckon you could be spot on with that observation. IH
A joy to watch and listen 😁👍
Many thanks! IH
that is pretty cool
Superb work Ian. 😃👍🏻👍🏻soundtrack has a hint about it of our hero, Fred Judd. 😃👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for the comment! IH
fantastic watch ...is this available to buy as a dvd ? I'm also looking for helliwells cd fantastic job mr Helliwell
Thanks! No DVD alas, as various licensing issues preclude a release, but a Helliwell CD of electronic music is indeed planned for 2023. The full hour long Practical Electronica film is available to hire for screenings.

Wowww
Your work is amazing. Any compilation in blue/ray ?
Thanks! There is the need to find someone willing to fund a release, get it made and distribute it. IH
Super cool experience 😊
... mind melting...this is so awesome!!! brain coral on electric koolaide... looping this over an over !!!!!
Holy shit, this was actually amazing! How did you make those patterns in the video? I want to know so much more about this
Thanks. The patterns are purely generated by video feedback - pointing the camera at the screen of the monitor to which it is connected. The sort of colours, textures and patterns achieved will depend on several factors: most notably the type of camera, the type of TV monitor and the way in which the camera is positioned and moved in relation to the screen. Quite different results will be reached according to variations in these parameters. Making a worthwhile film out of what can be generated with feedback however, is another matter; the timing, editing and music are all key to it being more than simply a few nice patterns to look at. IH
This made my brain feel like my eyes were vibrating
Nice
Everyone needs good feedback!
Is there a place to buy your visual and music experiences ian ?
Sorry Darren, none of my audiovisual work has been commercially released, apart from Art Flies Free, which is an extra on the Jeff Keen Gazwrx DVD set. If I had the resources and some backing I'd bring out my own DVD box set. Maybe one day... IH
Amazing as always !!!!! I love this visual and sonic experiences. Are so unique. Thx !!!!
Thanks for your generous comment. IH

Cool as always !!!
Very trippy video and sound 👍
Nice work Ian!
With Sören Willy Sjösten and Ian Hindle
Wonderful footage of the iconic Aces at Hyde rd
Very nicely done ✅
Amazing !!!!
Amazing stuff! How did you manage to get this rounded / circle effect at the beginning of the video?
Thanks. Well, the circular image was generated as soon as the video camera was pointed at the monitor, and from there it was a case of making small movements with the camera to activate different colours and patterns. It's very much a trial and error process to see what might occur - attempting to develop the most interesting images as they evolve. IH
Ian you are so cool !!!!!
Amazing !!!!
Love it! Shapes, colours and textures, editing, as well as the soundtrack - everything is brilliant here.
Thanks for the appreciative feedback. IH
