Reaching the 250 Token Limit Breaks Magic: The Gathering Arena
My friend has a new Hare Apparent Deck and with his token multipliers we quickly discovered the 250 token limit that's enforced by the game behind the scenes. It was a bummer that we couldn't get even more, but it turns out 250 is enough to make the game pretty interesting to watch.
Here's the Hare Apparent Deck in case you want to try it out for yourself, either to win or to break the game. :D
Deck
33 Hare Apparent (FDN)
21 Plains (FDN)
1 Delney, Streetwise Lookout (MKM)
2 Ojer Taq, Deepest Foundation (LCI)
3 Mondrak, Glory Dominus (ONE)
And here's my deck list, which is a reasonably good creature deck focused on stacking up counters, but maybe not a match for all these bunnies.
Deck
23 Forest (DSK) 286
2 Innkeeper's Talent (BLB) 180
2 Overprotect (BLB) 185
3 Llanowar Elves (FDN) 227
4 Roaming Throne (LCI) 258
2 Overlord of the Hauntwoods (DSK) 194
1 Quick-Draw Katana (FDN) 130
4 Mossborn Hydra (FDN) 107
4 Grow from the Ashes (FDN) 225
2 Vivien Reid (FDN) 234
3 House Cartographer (DSK) 185
3 Doubling Season (FDN) 216
3 Gruff Triplets (WOE) 172
1 Primeval Bounty (FDN) 644
1 Swiftfoot Boots (FDN) 258
1 Swiftfoot Boots (BRR) 58
1 Leyline Axe (FDN) 129
Hope you enjoy the video and have a great day!

How many Gruff Triplets would you block?

I recorded the dramatic ending of a game I was playing on my phone. I managed to outstack this landfall token deck with my Roaming Throne and 2 sets of Gruff Triplets. The synergy works pretty well, since it doubles the number of tokens they make when they enter, and it also doubles the number of counters they place on all the others when they are destroyed. Sorry I missed getting the game audi...

It turns out, sometimes all you need is just one really good creature :) Lately I've been having a lot of trouble against control decks, so it was fun to face off against a friend and just have a creature deck vs creature deck battle. His is so fast at getting so much mana and so many creatures out in t he first few turns, but I've got 1/ 1 counters on my side! Also wanted to give a big thanks ...
Magic: The Gathering, but my friend lets me win just a *little* bit

My friend has some really solid angel decks that beat my mono green stacking creature decks most of the time, but this opportunity for silliness was too good, so I got to win :D Big thanks to him not needing to go for the win so that we could see the big numbers go bigger and all these status effects! Hope ;you enjoy the goofy shenanigans! Feel free to come by the stream sometime - I don't mind...

You think only 250 tokens is bad...try Hearthstone. When it first came out I tried to make a token deck and my tokens capped at 8. That's really sad.
@@UrsusObesus Wow 8 seems like they should have run into that limit all the time during testing. At least 250 feels kind of rare to get to in Magic so it's not too often it makes a difference.
You need a life link!😂
@@Ving4dor Haha I wish! It'd be fun to see how high it would let my life total go.
So I actually ended up crashing Arena by putting too many triggers on the stack. Attacked with Myrel to put a ton of tokens in (was also using Mondrak, Ojer Tak, Roaming Throne, and Leyline of Transformation - Soldier... but those weren't required). The real problem was that I also had Enduring Courage, Elesh Norn, and Virtue of Knowledge on the board (poor Sparky). Anyway, the first trigger created 42 Soldiers which put 126 Enduring Courage triggers on the stack. The second trigger from Roaming Throne.... well, I guessed it maxed out the tokens then tried to put 3x that many triggers of Enduring Courage on the stack. The game crashed with 537 triggers left to resolve, but it was chugging for a long time before it gave up :)
@@fluffyfang4213 Haha that's awesome - that's interesting it kept trying all the way to a crash. We had something similar once where effects kept triggering more new effects so it eventually popped up a message that unless a different action was taken it would end the game in a draw. Neither of us could play anything different so the game just ended lol. Maybe the difference was since you generated all the effects at once instead of continually adding a couple more.
Hopefully with the new commander game being developed the limiter will be able to handle alot more
@@tennex7454 I haven't heard too much about the new game but hopefully! From the few games of Commander I've played in person I think I remember them being longer games with larger decks, so it could be more common to want to accumulate a lot of stuff.
Lo mejor de todo es que como no arrolla solo con una criatura lo bloqueas.
Wtf is happening
Ahh I pull that move so much.
Lmao
Bruh! Didn’t even have trample.
this is actually hilarious
I’ve had someone do that when all my blockers had lifelink😂😂😂
@@mykyrox Haha that's fantastic, how much life did you end up with?
That hissy laugh... RISITAS ?
Man white is soo good
all that but no trample so we lose
I can't get my creatures to block multiple. Really starting to make me unhappy. So I can't to this
I don't think it's possible to have a creature block more than one creature, but it should be possible to have as many creatures as you want block one creature when you're defending. In this clip my friend had blocked with almost all his creatures just for fun, but since it didn't have trample this probably wouldn't happen in a regular game. There is a new mechanic that lets the attacker choose how to distribute damage that's newer than this clip, but I think the same thing would have still happened.
Heay, a collab to some degree would be pretty cool!
A little of rample will be great!
Oh, a penny! Oh, a penny! Oh, a penny!
Does that have bristly bill because bill and kami of whispered hopes can lead to you having a 10240/10240 and 1992 mana
@@PQuas I think I've had at least some of them in most versions of this deck but I've never tried heavily stacking one of the Kamis. Maybe I'll have to try that and fit something really expensive in the deck to pay for with it
Its all fun and games till they realise you dont have trample on it and block you with a 1/1 lol
Yeah we were just messing around in this one, but in ranked matches it's great to see a 1/1 block if I'm hiding an Overprotect or something else that gives trample. This level of counters hasn't shown up in a competitive game but it's not too hard to get to 20 or so and be enough for a surprise win in one go.
😮😮😮
This is wild 😂😂😂 awesome description, thanks for the deck list!
Thanks! It was a fun game! It's been cool trying to figure out which Foundations cards will fit in best with this strategy or just shenanigans too
@owlzio it's crazy. So many of the cards are simple and straightforward and in some cases it just makes them really flexible I guess.
@@JayTheDragonKing So far I've been experimenting with some of the hydras since they have +1/+1 counter mechanics too. Can't tell if it's made the deck better overall though since it's a little higher average mana cost. The Gnarlid Colony is nice for automatically giving all creatures with counters trample
I's all fun and games until he pulls out an Ajani
Is that the Planeswalker where he can just win if he has enough extra life? I think I've seen that a couple times. Feels really strong with how quickly these angel life gain decks go.
@owlzio 0: if you have at least 15 more life than you started the game, exile Ajani and all creatures and artifacts your opponents control
@@matteokellermannguedes3543 Haha oh no - someday I'll figure out how to counter board wipes and creature removal but I definitely haven't yet
@@owlzio Ajani is the only solution in an Angels mirror match (I play them in Explorer). About board wipes, at least in Standard, I also find it tricky to protect my creatures since the most used wipe is Sunfall, which exiles, so indestructible is not an option.
@@matteokellermannguedes3543 Lol imagining an angel deck mirror match up just makes me think of that one episode of the Pokemon cartoon where they just have their Metapods harden back and forth for hours
this is not real magic
Who needs a board wipe when you can just get blocked by everything with an impossibly large creature
@@anthonycannet1305 Haha I just need to find a way to use this mechanic but put the counters on one of those creatures that must be blocked by all available blockers and it'd be perfect.
WTF happened! ahahah
this is so dumb... i love it so much! thx for the deck idea also!
Glad you enjoyed it! I'm excited to see what similar decks might be possible with the new stuff in Foundations too
@@owlzio trust me, there is a doubling season reprint (i pulled it in prerelease) pair that with your deck and...
@@Yuvihakla Oh man it looks like those are mythic but I might have to get them cause that's really strong. I wonder if I could fit token creation into this deck too so I'd get both benefits. Thanks for the idea to watch for that card!
That’s pretty cool but I’m hitting with Emmara Tokens with 3million +1/+1 counters
are you guys stoned ? xD
Lol nope just silly, and fans of big Tumblewaggs
*Vine boom sound effect*
This one is basically a board wipe 😂👌
Fuck angel braindead decks. Unfun to play, to play against, the deck plays by itself and is broken. If you dont have a sweaper ur dead. If u do they're dead. That's a coin flip, it's yu gi ho or hearthstone. Please stop playing theme.
Reminds when I made a devilish vallet with 1.93 E^25 power
@@Mazz-Mayhem That sounds awesome! Was that in an in-person game? As far as I can tell the max is quite a bit lower in MTG Arena. That sounds super fun for a tabletop game but I'd be nervous about getting the math right.
@@owlzio it was a commander game with friends.
@@owlzio did the math on my calculator to make sure I didn't mess up the math
Yeah I've done with a Healer Hawk & Light of Promise back in the day lol, nothing like getting 10,000 counters & life in one hit
I wonder if tumblewagg plus flytrap can be a thing, serms overkill but It could be good
@@giacomogiliberti2673 That looks interesting! Could work well I think, but I'd have to see if I could get enough card types in my graveyard for it to have its full effect. I think I have a couple of these from packs I've opened though, so I might go ahead and give it a try. Thanks for the suggestion!
WHY DID IT ACT LIKE PAC MAN??? IM DYING 😂😂
Did the opponent just choose to full block? Cause it didn't hit the player afterwards so it didn't have trample.
@@jo-yodance4526 Yeah this was actually a game with a friend and once he was clearly winning due to all the flying angels he had out we'd just started messing with making the Tumblewagg large and having it interact with other things. I think the Tumblewagg and Roaming Throne combo can be legitimately good though since it stacks up so fast. I have a few copies of Overprotect in my deck so the most common win condition I've had is if I get a large creature and then they block with just one creature, and if I give my creature trample and hexproof at the last moment it can one-shot them. If you're interested the video linked from this one shows the rest of the context of what's going on here.
All the power can’t beat the power of friendship. Except farewell that generally solves everything (planeswalkers excluded).
Flpflpflpflpflp
The attacks are so gun-graphic lol
Haha yeah I think I've noticed the sound effect for attacks changes with the power of the creature, and once the power is this high it does get really intense. Wonder if that caps at some normal number or if it just keeps getting louder lol
if you add bristle bill it doubles the amount of counters on selected creature, along with the creatures and sagas you have
That's a good thing to point out! His ability to double for all your creatures at once works well if you've got multiple creatures you're stacking (which is probably better in most cases than maxing out one creature). I do have one of him in my deck, but I usually try to play him early if I have him to take advantage of his landfall ability and it seems like he's always getting taken out by cut down or fell or some card that gives -2/-2, does 3 damage, or exiles creatures. Maybe I need to be holding on to him for later. I've also been stingy with my mythic wildcards, but maybe it's worth getting more than one soon. I've also experimented with Ozolith, the Shattered Spire and Kami of Whispered Hopes, which can also speed up adding counters, especially with Innkeeper's Talent, but Bill works better than Kami I think since he starts at 2/2 and works for Saddling without having to spend a counter on him. If I put some high mana costs in my deck it'd be pretty fun to pay for them with a really stacked Kami though. Thanks again for the comment and suggestion!
@@owlzio kami taps for mana tho, which lets you get board advantage quicker
I might have to try putting them back in, seems potentially worth it with the mana and the synergy for counters. It's so hard getting down to 60 cards lol
@owlzio i definitely agree
dear god
Turns out the maximum number of counters you can put on a Tumblewagg is 1,073,741,823! (2^30-1 - I'm still curious why it doesn't cap at 2^31-1 like most 4-byte ints.) We did get there later in the game but this was probably the funniest moment cause of the creatures blocking and getting replaced.
@@owlzio that last bit is probably being used to hold some other info
@@EpicShadeSlayerSauce Yeah I feel like that has to be the case too. I can't quite figure out what it'd be though. Shouldn't be whether the counters are positive or negative since it's already giving up a bit for the sign. Not sure if it could be for status things like flying or indestructible etc. cause there's more than two options? Maybe whether it's tapped or not? I guess it could also secretly be a 64-bit integer instead and just be hiding a bunch of other information.
2 roaming thrones is crazy
The build i just beat her with was sharp shadow, dream shild, glowing womb, long nail, mark of pride. You can also use. Sharp shadow l, glowing wobm, dream shild, defenders crest, steady body, then mark of pride or soul eater. Great for passive damage
@@MAXYIGA441 Nice work beating her on radiant! That build sounds interesting - I might go for Weaversong or Grimmchild too for some more long range passive damage. Sharp shadow might help but for me I wouldn't be used to the distance and I bet I'd immediately hit the spikes lol
@@owlzio i only have glowing womb so that's why I used it. I just got back into hollow knight after stopping around may 5. I just use sharp shadow for her up and down attack. I forgot about grimchild 😆
@@MAXYIGA441 Oh whoops, hope I didn't spoil any charms you don't have yet! But with sharp shadow sounds like you're pretty far so hopefully not. Glad you're back to the game, just in time to wait for Silksong :)
@@owlzio oh I know about them already. I am excited for silksong. The time it is taking says it will be great. Also this is what my dad says makes sens: heavy blow is good for bosses with quick stagers so you can make them faster. Probably my 2nd fav boss. Don't worry about spoilers. I already know about it most, likely
mythic tier? thats a no from me dawg
It's probably not for everybody, and it does have enough counters to be fairly situational, but it did win enough to get me to mythic! :) It's also nice that the cards themselves are only rare, so they're a little cheaper to get.
For future videos, dont forget to post deck in description so that people can import and try themselves
That's a great idea! I'll remember to do that in the future. I don't have the exact deck from this game anymore but I added the current version of it to the description now. Thanks!
The tutorial would NOT have prepared you for that.. lol
Haha I'll say! In the parts I played I don't think any of the tutorial opponents or players in the tutorial challenges had cards and combos like the ones I've seen since. I finally started winning some more games though, just made it to Silver tonight!
Really cool new player experience game, saving this video to show to naysayers who claim the newplayer experience is terrible
Glad to show a good counterexample! I've definitely had some cards and opponents that felt too good for me to be playing against so early, but this one was a surprisingly close and good game. I thought I was done for once they got that combo going.
Small nitpick but should have played the flash card after he declares his attackers to surprise him after he commits his attackers
Next time when u have the decision between "Murder" and "Neutralize the Guards" i think u should use the latter first because u get to surveil and set up your next drawstep. It was crucial for you to draw land so u can keep up the pressure while holding up a removal spell there and u just ripped it off the top like a chad. It turned out to be a really good play but it was risky af. Also, u can flip Incubate tokens on instant speed so u most of the time wanna do it on their endstep to prevent getting boardwiped or it getting targeted by sorceries. All in all, well played!
Thanks, and thanks for the advice! I'd ignored the difference between the two cards in this game but that makes a lot of sense to be setting up future card draws sooner rather than later. I've also noticed there's a few different effects, like surveil and scry, and maybe search or explore too? Not sure what's different between those yet.
very interesting deck he built, you got so lucky with murder coming out when it did twice but you did super well to get the W haha
Haha yeah I think I had pretty much perfect luck getting all those instant cards and just enough life from lifelink to live at the beginning. I was expecting to lose at any moment so this was a nice surprise. I'm curious if he got lucky drawing his Forge so soon or if the deck is set up so he always should get one by then. Thanks for watching the game and the comment!

Sounds like you've had a lot of success already! I think I've only won 3 or 4 games total so I'm climbing quite a bit slower. This was a fun one though, and with how it worked out maybe my deck isn't as outmatched as I thought it was.
