261: Andrew Molera State Park - Best BIG SUR Beach Access, Monarch Butterflies & Hiking Trails
Welcome to another Highway 1 adventure along the Big Sur coastline. This week I’m excited to bring you along for a virtual visit to Andrew Molera State Park, which is home to some of the best hiking trails, wildlife viewing, and beach access in all of Big Sur.
At roughly 4,800 acres in size, Andrew Molera is the largest California State Park in Big Sur, and the vast majority of it is undeveloped. Located where the Big Sur River empties into the Pacific Ocean about 20 miles south of Carmel, this popular destination is a great stop on any central coast road trip. The park is easily accessible via Highway 1, the iconic Pacific Coast Highway, which offers breathtaking views of the ocean and rugged coastline as you approach. The entrance to the park is well-marked, and ample parking is available for visitors.

Hi, do you have to hike to get to the beach?
I remember the original swinging bridge, it wasn't stationary like it is now. Growing up, my parents and siblings went camping in Yosemite Valley before reservations were required. We used to arrive early in the morning to scout out campsites that were vacant, or the people were packing up to leave. We would then stand in line (only 5-10 people) and ask the ranger to assign us to the site we liked the best. Occasionally we used to like going to the swinging bridge to spend an afternoon at the riverside to go swimming. Back then the bridge had hand cables instead of wood rails, and the footbridge had suspended planks. It was fun
The dam at Hetch Hetchy is definitely not “permanent”.. it will one day be taken down.

Where is this!?! I am combing thru stops on Tioga Pass right now..and want to make sure this ends up on our list.
@@shaze627 this is a seasonal waterfall along South Fork Tuolumne River directly along Tioga Rd. It does dry up by fall (it’s less than 10 miles east of the chevron & there’s a small pull out next to the waterfall)
I remember in the 1970’s when you could stay at hot creek canyon and enjoy those hot springs all night long.

@@thanhd4611 while we were staying here there were dozens of people having a blast tubing & we could see them floating down the Merced from our campsite.😊

@@kimberlyjaramillo8955 California (Yosemite National Park) there’s a small parking lot that can accommodate a dozen cars and you can walk right to this picnic area onto the bridge. If the swinging bridge parking lot here is full there are many other places to park less than half a mile away and you can walk the easy path along the boardwalk trail to reach this spot.😊

@@genet2017 this video is from the last week in May, typically this waterfall reaches its fullest flow between late May & mid-June (by the fall it can slow to a trickle) hope that helps.☺️

@@EdithJustice I have the details on my full Glacier Point blog post & TH-cam video - this spot is super easy to find when you head to Glacier Point this piece of Granite is next to the outdoor amphitheater & it’s hard to miss, it juts up and there’s a information panel by it because the original glacier point hotel was actually built on this rock & and the information panels have pictures of the hotel here. I hope that helps, happy adventures!

If ever on I-10 going thru the LOUISIANA thru the Elevated Baisn damn long name the Rest Area if during open hrs, They have a very interesting museum type setup about that area some 10,000 yrs ago. Worth going thru..nice parking too

Isn't access road is a toll road to this place and bathrooms here are from shame dirty unusable to closed like couple of weeks ago? I just read some visitors reviews.
@@SergSpace nope, I’ve been here 3 times in the last month. This is Glacier Point Road & it’s not a toll road. I was here opening day, a week after the road opened for the spring & just last week & plenty of restrooms were open & clean both here at Glacier Point & along the drive up…and while bathrooms can close when they are cleaning them and on very busy weekends/holidays they can get dirty very quickly I’ve found the NPS typically does a wonderful job of keeping them clean and usable.
@@flyingdawnmarie Thanks for easing up my doom thoughts. However, we are planning to go on weekends. So Bad dream may come true. BTW Google maps show the toll roads all over Yosemite here and there.
It sure was super beautiful to see in May 2024!
