    Beautiful movie. Starting in a cruel / depressing space and leaves you in a very "wanting to experience" sorta space in the end. Felt like a journey. Its style ,treatment and 4 hr run time are its strength. Kinda sucks you in , vaporizes and feels like in the end, the movie walked along with you. Very Satisfactory. Rest In Peace Hu Bo.

    You know, back in Easter 2020 I have watched, in late afternoon/evening, "Blue is the warmest color". Since then I have decided to watch a three hour or longer movie every Easter. The criteria are just these two: it must be 180 minutes long MINIMUM and a movie I never watched before. In 2021 I watched "Once upon a time in America", in 2022 "Jeanne Dielman 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles", this year I watched Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet, and then I'll decided what to watch in Easter 2024. Long movies became a tradition for me, journeys I'm more than willing to sit through and to enjoy differently than I usually do with regular movies. As an Italian I was wondering what do you think about Marco Tullio Giordana's The best of youth. It was conceived as a miniseries, then it was presented at Cannes in two acts of three hours, it was theatrically released here in Italy in that way and then at december 2003 it was broadcast on TV as a four part miniseries (each part is around 90 minutes) with some extra scenes cut from the theatrical run (of course in a 6 hour long movie, 20 minutes extra aren't that big deal). I also consider Fanny and Alexander an actual movie rather than a miniseries. Bergman was about to make it as a miniseries, then decided to present it as a 5 hour long movie, then the producers made him make a shorter cut for wide releases, the extended one had its theatrical run and later was broadcast as a four part miniseries. For me, it's still a single theatrical movie. The 3 hour cut loses SO MUCH I just can't bare to think there's an actual shorter cut out there. I wonder how much Bergman must have suffered when cutting all those pivotal scenes. There's just no shorter cut: Fanny and Alexander IS the 5 hour version, period. Let me know what do you think about The best of youth. As you might have understood, both "Fanny and Alexander" and "The best of youth" are among my favourite movies ever.

    • @thefilmseeker
      @thefilmseeker ปีที่แล้ว

      I really like The Best of Youth. Definitely a journey that at least tries to justify its length by being incredibly sprawling in its scope. The Eight Mountains from last year is basically just a vastly inferior version of it.

    • @EugenioScamardella
      @EugenioScamardella ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thefilmseeker How yould you compare it to Bertolucci's Novecento? That movie is... kind of controversial, to say the least. I'd say that while The best of youth handles its epic scope (an intimate epic, such as A Brighter Summer Day) through the lenses of a personal journey, an ensemble drama that spans over thirty years of Italian history seen through our protagonist's eyes and without losing this kind of intimate focus, Novecento is way more... pompous, and lacks subtlety. It's shot beautifully and has amazing visuals I can't help but gasp at the sight of, but when it comes to the story I still don't know what to think about the way Bertolucci tells it. Novecento can be considered the successor of Soviet comunist cinema, while The best of youth is more like a novel by Tolstoj. And you? What do you think about Novecento?

Would be interested in a beginner’s guide to film criticism, just to hear more about how you approach films, think through them afterwards, and how you go about organizing your thoughts. • @Babriel_
    @Babriel_ ปีที่แล้ว

    When it comes to these longer runtime films, I have a hard time imagining how the directors envisioned them being viewed. For a 7 hour movie, is a director expecting you to sit there the entire time? Break it up into multiple viewings over multiple days? If you played these in theaters, viewers’ biological needs would necessitate some departure from the story (bathroom, food, a nap). With that in mind, a 4+ hour runtime seems to indicate the director no longer cares about a sort of “standard viewing experience,” which while I can already hear counterpoints to the idea of a standard viewing experience today (with streaming, someone can’t predict how their movie will be viewed), it feels discouraging to me to think a director doesn’t really care about this-the implication being there isn’t a sense of momentum or that not every minute matters.

    • @thefilmseeker
      @thefilmseeker ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a big part of the question, especially since so many of these films seem to be divided into chapters anyway. But I have a much easier time believing a film like La Flor, which came out last decade, would be conscious of segmented viewing habits than a film like Out 1, which came out in the '70s. Still, for these films to have theatrical exhibitions... I don't know how anyone does it. 4 hours is probably the absolute max I can take before I'd need an intermission, and when you add that, I don't know how many hours these filmmakers are expecting us to spend in the theatre.

    • @peenweinerstein9968
      @peenweinerstein9968 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thefilmseeker but in your video you argued that the ratings were skewed due to the Stockholm syndrome. If you engage with cinema to neatly order or try to quantify art then I think your presuppositions are off base. I’m sure the directors who care about cinema as an art form would shudder to think their work is being reduced down to an average star rating. Who cares if a 6 hour movie’s rating is not accurate, The director is trying to portray something that is unquantifiable. Could you imagine having the observation over any other art form? “Symphony number 9 is too long… Some of the fat should be trimmed! Sistine chapel roof is too large, he should have made it a few smaller paintings and easier to see! Their 4.7 star rating consensus is/isn’t justified.”

    • @thefilmseeker
      @thefilmseeker ปีที่แล้ว

      @@peenweinerstein9968 Films always end up reduced to a number rating, that’s just the way things go with the prevalence of these review sites. My point is just that it’s possible some people may be inclined to give a much longer movie a higher rating than if it was shorter because they might think “Well shit, that HAD to be amazing, otherwise I just spent 6 hours watching a movie that was… fine?” Some movies with this acclaim, in my view, do justify those lengths. Others don’t. That was the intended goal here. And yeah, reducing them to a number grade for the purposes of gauging that reception is what I’m going off for the most part.

    Elephant Sitting Still is one of my favorite films, and it's the one that I decided to put on my nametag at the theater I work at. It's beautiful and haunting in equal measure, and when I immersed yourself in its world for so long the briefest glimpse of happiness at the end was enough to bring me to tears. I've heard some people say that it feels like a suicide note from Hu Bo, and that couldn't be further from the truth - it's a movie that honestly stares into how grim the world can be and offers that we don't have to let that darkness consume us. That's what makes what happened after its completion so singularly tragic. Rest in peace.

    I had to rearrange my top 5 list which I have not changed for the last 11 years. now it seems like this: 1. Dead Poets Society 2. An elephant Sitting Still 3. Shakespeare in Love 4. Midnight in Paris 5. Almost Famous and being pushed at number 6 is The Perks of Being a Wallflower. So, do you like my list? and are there any movies in here that are also your favorites? and please make a video about one of my top 5 films...

      I really love Midnight in Paris. ...The other 3 are really, REALLY not my thing at all, but there's definitely a consistency in tone that's interesting (which makes An Elephant Sitting Still look even funnier in this lineup). Still, thanks for sharing! Always nice to see people throw in their own 2 cents on the films they're passionate about.

      @@thefilmseeker Funny in the sense that it does not match the tone of other movies or that it really sinks in?

    When you talk about "other successful slasher movies", are you talking about those that came before Scream or after?

    Scream 1,2,4 was created/ written by Kevin Williamson. He didn’t end up writing scream 3, but The plot he originally wrote for scream 3 (but didn’t get to create) was later turned into “the following “ with Kevin bacon.

    Editor’s note: After rewatching the film when it was released wide, I’ve changed my tune on Banks Repata’s performance. Nothing mind-blowing, but given the heavy implications that his character may have ADHD or another learning disorder, I found his sort of stilted line delivery to make a lot more sense this time. At least, it felt like far more of an intentional choice that elevates the film rather than detracting from it like I initially thought.

    I've read that a lot of people enjoyed the whimsy of Celine and Julie, I am on the fence there. Travelling players was great once I got a gist of some Greek history and Munch was as great a biopic as they can get

      Really couldn't stand the pointless narration and constant The Office-style deadpan camera glares that would completely undercut any tragedy that came from what felt like a family member dying of TB every other scene.

    Thank you for this. As a Chinese who has over the years despised C drama and C films due to the lack of professionalism, lack of talent and the over saturation of fast food entertainment made by money laundering idiots ( I could talk ages about this) this film made my eyes lit up since I saw hope. Hu’s passing as a rare talent in todays soulless and capitalist entertainment world was absolutely gut wrenching. He never got to see how much he is loved not just by other Chinese but by global fans. His mum took the award home and we never get to see another film of his. Appreciate you doing this clip
