what is that stupid white thing around their faces?
They are clear masks. This was production was performed early in 2021, when Covid masks were still mandatory in most schools. The clear masks on stage were a compromise for the show. As soon at the actors go backstage they had proper cloth masks waiting.

This production is visually stunning but the poorly coached accents really put a damper on this production for me. So much potential
For a High School Production this is magnificent! The voices are wonderful and all the students are to be proud of this production. Very well done.
It would be a little bitter without the clear mask

This is great but they just copied most of the Broadway performance
They licensed the scenic design from the original Broadway production.

Where did this high school get the money for a full orchestra😅
Most of the string players look like students, and I'd bet they have a fair number of faculty etc. in the pit as well. Just a guess.
Lots of high schools have orchestras within the school that usually assist with productions
