Harry Nilsson’s Search for Meaning
มุมมอง 13116 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Harry Nilsson's 1971 record, The Point, may be the greatest children's story ever written. To top it off it also just so happens to have some of the most well written pop songs ever put to tape. A timeless tale about growing and finding meaning in life; a story for everyone. That is the point. What Makes Hallelujah Special; From a Deep-Cut to an Icon
มุมมอง 20814 วันที่ผ่านมา
What makes an Icon? How can a song propel itself beyond entertainment, be able to be read in a religious context, and as a lustful account of lost love? Hallelujah is one of the most well-known and recognizable songs today, but that was not always the case. This is a look at the history, from its initial release when Sony refused to release the album in Canada or the United States to the many s...
Sonic Youth Selling Out in Style, Bringing Noise Rock to the Masses

The album ‘SurfsUp’ is certainly my favourite Beach Boys album. When I bought it in the early 70’s I was working in a studio by myself with few albums so this got played a lot. My favourite track was certainly ‘Surfs Up’ with the wonderful lyrics by Van Dyke Parks. When I was on holiday in New York I bought Orange Crate Art which was written by Van Dyke Parks with singing by Brian Wilson. I managed to find Van Dyke Parks email address and wrote to him back then to enquire when he would be working with Brian again and got a lovely reply.

Good video! I agree that Brian made masterpiece songs after Pet Sounds. Good Vibrations, Cabin Essence, Wind Chimes, Surfs Up, are all 10s in my opinion. A Day in the Life of a Tree is fantastic! Concerning Til I Die, the best version on that song is the Stephen Desper mix! Love You is a great weird album, but not a masterpiece. However, Brian has made another masterpiece album. That Lucky Old Sun in 2008!

TIL I DIE IS AN EXTREMELY COMPLICATED MUSICAL EXPRESSION COUPLED WITH INTERWOVEN VOCAL HARMONICS BASED ON AN AUGMENTATION OF THE COMBINATION SOUNDING LIKE TWO STRANGERS CROSSING A RIVER IN OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS IN THE DARKEST NIGHT /YET SOMEHOW THEY REACH AN ALMOST UNPARALLELED BLEND ASTONISHING THE LISTENER TO DEEPLY VENTURE TOWARDS TERRITORY ONLY BRIAN HAS DEFINED. IF ONE HAS MADE A LIFELONG STUDY OF / BAND MATES /FAMILY / FRIENDS/ COLLABORATORS/ HIGHLY SCHOOLED MUSICIANS AND INFLUENCES SECRETLY INTERNAL RESIDING BATHING IN BRIAN’S SOOTHING GENIUS IT POINTS IN THAT DIRECTION. TO INSINUATE THE LYRICAL NARRATIVE IS SOMETHING LESS CONTRIBUTIVE IS INDICATIVE OF A LISTENER EITHER INEPT OR UNCOMMITTED TO THE ARTIST AND SUBJECT MATTER.THE HAUNTING BEAUTY OF A NAKED INTERSECTION OF ONE’S LIFE WITH THE DEEPEST BRUSH STROKES OF A MASTERPIECE REQUIRES TOO MUCH OF AN EMOTIONAL ENTWINEMENT FOR MOST TO LEAP OFF THE CLIFF PATIENTLY KNOWING FEARLESSLY OF HOW WE FIT INSIDE. Re: SURF’S UP. THIS SONG EXISTS AS IS SOLELY DUE TO CARL WILSONS BRILLIANCE AND FORESIGHT UNEQUALED COMMITMENT TO THE MESSAGES MENTIONED WITHIN THE MATERIAL. THE CUSTODY OF IT’S MANY PARTS COULD HAVE BEEN ASSEMBLED SCATTERED WITHOUT THE FLOW OF STUNNING EMOTION PRESENTATION OF A FOREVER JOURNEY ENJOYABLE FOR LIFETIMES . 1

What you didn't mention is that John Cale changed the musical structure and arrangement of Leonard Cohen's original, which gave the song a total different outcome in terms of sound and atmosphere. I have checked Cohen's live interpretations of Halleluja in the 80's and early 90's and NONE sound (lyrics excluded) like the version Cale recorded in 1991. So Cale did not just copy Cohen's version, but Cale was the genius to give the song a totally different outcome of the songs accessability by giving it a far more accomplished arrangement. Give credit to where credit is due!

What I love about this album is that it is so dark, particularly the second side. Plant's primordial scream in "I'm Gonna Crawl" ends the album so beautifully. Understanding the backstory of this album makes me appreciate this album that much more.

I will defend the honour of Bad Moon Rising to my grave. One of the single best representations of a live set in a studio setting which takes advantage of the possibilities of the studio without losing that energy and power. That said, Washing Machine is even better. Basically a perfect record where even its "weak" moments are transcendent in their own right and add to the gestalt experience of the record. Probably my favourite of theirs. The impressionistic guitar harmonies on "Becuz" give me chills. Which is not to diminish what you're saying, at all. Goo absolutely rules and is a perfectly logical progression from what they were doing on Daydream Nation and Sister (which I feel are actually two very different but closely related things), with the longer tracks on that one ("Cinderella's Big Score", "Tunic (Song for Karen)", "Titanium Exposé", "Mote") easily going toe-to-toe with Daydream Nation's best; and Dirty of course continued to build on that in some really interesting ways, flirting with both the most "pop" sounds of their career while also having some of their rawest and weirdest material in years, much of which is still pretty catchy (see: every Kim Gordon song on that record). But, y'know. I'm a Sonic Youth fan. Talking about Sonic Youth is kind of just What We Do.

Wonderful video! I basically agree with your take on them. I ran one of the first websites about Sonic Youth in the mid to early 90s. Interviewed Steve and Lee etc. I love and appreciate them as a band and concept. But the absurd thing is just the quality of their output. It’s one thing to be conceptual and avant-garde, which of course they were, but it’s another thing to in the process somehow create a great lasting rock discography. Keep it up. I can tell you’re getting it.

Daydream nation a "double album"? Maybe 4 vinyl sides, but it was released on a single CD/cassette etc. Also surprised you brought up their connection to Nirvana without mentioning 1991 the year punk broke, or the fact that gold mountain, their managment were the same people that got them their major deal & arguably "broke them" to the mainstream, or the advent of "alternative rock" becoming a new programming paradigm after. Sonic youth have a nuanced relationship with the "mainstream" in all kinds of ways you didn't even touch on... minor critique aside, great video

    • @ComInBraille
      @ComInBraille 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

There are plenty of "double albums" that are single CDs. As an example, just because Blonde on Blonde fits on a single CD doesn't mean it is no longer the first ever double album in pop-rock history. Also, I love nuance and the things you mention are certainly valid and true, but it can cause issue to add too much minor detail in a succinct video with a fairly singular focal point. I know you and I certainly care and appreciate those details, but unfortunately not everyone feels the same way.

Their breakup and why they did seemed rather traumatizing, not as if our parents divorced but for those who found solace or saw an example of a solid couple, it had to be rough, and of course mostly for the band. Listening to Kim’s memoir, it’s hard to listen to them with the same enthusiasm sometimes. It wasn’t our lives but they effected a lot of ours so deeply, to watch them fall into pedestrian chaos is a reminder we made the luck of getting their in jokes on their records. I still listen and talk about them but knowing they’ll likely never reunite is part of why it’s hard to talk about. They earned a Beatle-like status ion their own terms, undeniably infectious source material, a decades long study of tone and timbre so at least their inspiration still resonates. Goo was my first purchase of their output when I was 15. although I spent 5 years combing the import bin at tower for punk records. Hate to say I shied away from taking a look since the skater kids in my neighborhood didn’t bring them up, but when I saw the video for “Kool Thing” and knew I’d been missing out, I just rolled with it.

Nirvana signed to Geffen cause of nirvana. They would have always signed to a major once the nevermind demos where released into the wild. They where already on a few majors radar after sliver came out.

Selling out is so normalized now, there's barely any push back for it, I'm 18 and people my age nowadays would just say "go get your bag". I feel that's such a bad thing because it destroys this level of authenticity that independent art used to have, it was interesting that in the late 70's the DIY scene started to take place in England, and people were trying to inspire and show how anyone could play the game without having to work with majors. I feel Sonic Youth selling out is still felt till this day and normalized this kind of behavior, ofcourse the Clash and Sex Pistols had already done it before by signing to majors and basically going against the whole "punk" philosophy. But selling out should become a pejorative like it once was, the only time I really see it still being in use is in the underground rap scene nowadays. It's not even an underground music thing, selling out has just always been a no-no for artists in the past, can you imagine that the Beatles never put any of their music on ads? No artist today would have the willpower to do that. People have no idea that you can still be pretty massive and important, without being dirt poor "selling out" is not necessary at all. So many cult bands that are still doing very well for themselves without signing to a major or having to put their music in ads. It all starts with building a real core audience.

    • @stewartmitchell8007

I was a fan from the moment John Peel spun Death valley 69 on the late night radio as a teen. Couldn't understand what was going on in first listen. I do understand the major label sign up at that time, especially for American bands. Nearly all US underground bands had to aim for Greg Ginn's SST records to get any kind of reliable distribution and SST was still incredibly unreliable at that time with zero recording budget and patchy distribution/stock plus they didn't pay unless they had too. Getting sonic youth records usually meant ordering direct from the set catalogue included in the album told and waiting forever for them to get round to sending it out (the cheque always cleared quick enough, lol). Husker du and Rem where really the bands that showed the underground a respectable transition could happen. Very different time and definitely viewed differently after the sub pop goldrush. Never see that time again.
