    Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't most mental health professionals define what's a disorder based on whether that person is able to function normally in society? And doesn't that mean that whether or not you have a mental disorder sort of is a matter of how mentally strong you are? That means building up mental strength is a totally valid way of dealing with mental health issues and I believe that's a significant part of what therapy does. But who says you have to leave it all up to mental health professionals to build up that mental strength? Cultural factors/societal expectations can and do play a major role in building up resilience towards certain types of stressors simply by virtue of it being a social norm. For example, the amount of people who are naturally shy and socially anxious shouldn't differ that greatly between Japan and the US, but my impression is that Americans are generally a lot more capable of dealing with the pressures of public speaking because there is sort of this social expectation that you should be able to speak eloquently in a public setting (hence the amount of debate clubs and participation based grading systems). Can we really say with confidence that this social expectation is an outdated relic of the past that should be done away with in place of a greater awareness and education about social anxiety and the stresses public speaking places on people who suffer from it? Or is it just a feature of the culture, just like it is in Japan to see maintaining a good mental condition as part of your responsibility as a working adult? At the very least, we should be more wary about thinking of everything as a disorder. Because let's be real, when faced with a choice between reflecting on yourself and thinking about ways in which you might need to grow or become mentally tougher or telling yourself you suffer from a mental disorder and thus can't be blamed for not being able to function in a certain capacity, most people will choose the latter because it's the easier way out. And I fear that's happening en masse in a lot of western societies these days. We should be a lot more cautious in deciding whether certain social norms in Japan are truly as toxic as people say they are or simply an effective way to encourage people to better themselves.

    Don’t bother with the archaic culture. More progressive Japanese companies are reviewing and revamping their work culture, so I’d suggest not to waste your productive years working under the old-school ones. Let them go under so new companies can emerge and try newer ideas.

    • @lisasweatz
      @lisasweatz หลายเดือนก่อน

      I actually do work for a company that's known as "progressive" (foreign owned) in Japan. I thought if the company is progressive enough then people would be different but considering people changing jobs from working for other JTC (Japanese traditional companies), they tend to implement the old-fashioned traditions to their subordinates...it really depends on who you have to work with. You have a good point though.

    • @speedycatz
      @speedycatz หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@lisasweatzI agree. Your n+1 (direct supervisor) and n+2 are generally the ones who define the team culture. I personally work in a multinational company in Tokyo, and just like you said, each team has different culture set by its team leader.

    • @lisasweatz

      There are a lot of things to appreciate about Japanese culture as well. I just don't think anyone is deserved to die from overworking...life is to live!

  • @ClaudeRuelle
    @ClaudeRuelle หลายเดือนก่อน

    I think that despite facing concrete hardships like war and famine, the older generation had better mental health because these challenges gave them a sense of purpose, whether in defending their nation, pursuing peace, or feeding their families. Our generation enjoys more comfort but we’re confused about our purpose, with many working meaningless corporate jobs, consuming endless social media, and struggling with relationships. In the west, we become more and more aware of this, many people leave high paying corporate jobs to work simple jobs even if that means making less money, but I wonder how it is in Japan.

    • @lisasweatz
      @lisasweatz หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a very interesting perspective, and I do agree with you! Honestly I can completely feel why people would move jobs from corporate. A lot of Japanese people are actually moving overseas for new opportunities because of this (and weak yen).

    • @kiepnguoi5058

      It’s because people back then didn’t have much of the burden of knowledge. People live just to get by the day. Now when peace is established, people have improved their likelihood, their children is born in a world of future plans and long term calculation. Young gen has to considerate a plethora of possibilities in their life which makes it extremely difficult to navigate if they don’t have a solid code of values. The education system, the media and the government has failed to inform and prepare them to the fast pace changing of society.

    Great video. I live in Tokyo (from the US) and supervise Japanese employees. Been here for 1 year now. I value personal time a lot so every week I let them leave work up to 2 hours early. It was shocking for them at first because it was something new to them. One employee even told me that he couldn’t go home early because it would look like he had a fake job. After a few months they got used to the idea and now they plan ahead on what they will do with that extra free time. Work environment is at an all time high and productivity has not been negatively impacted.

    I don't mean this in a mean way, but you are not Japaneses. You'd like to claim the identity to be cool and exotic, but if you filled a cultural survey the results would clearly match a typical Australian of your demographic and not Japanese.

      @lisasweatz หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for your critical opinion. I know that I would match a typical Australian without taking a survey lol People I work with treat me as if I'm Japanese Japanese (just because of my nationality) so it might look like I'm cool and exotic but I do struggle with identity crisis all the time.

      It happens to millions of people in the US. lol My parents were born in the US, I was born in Manhattan, but my ancestry is Spanish. Because of that, we are tagged as “Latin-American”. If you have African ancestry you are tagged as “African-American “ Etc etc. Only if you are white, your “Americanism” doesn’t get questioned. It’s the weirdest thing.
