Aka Tyson dated the Salzburg paper type used by Mozart for this Missa Solemnis in C-Major K. 337 to May-June 1780 - which exists in compleat form in Mozart’s own autograph but there exists a skizze (sketch) for the Credo in C (of some 138 bars !) which ends at the words (cvivs regni non erit finis) = ‘whose kingdom shall have no end’ - which sketch a few other composers have recently attempted their own musicological ‘completions’ - With the 1779/1780 revivals of ‘La Finta Giardiniera’ (written for Munich in 1774) Mozart received a scrittura contract from the Elector of Mannheim resident at Munich to compose a new opera seria (M. chose the mythological story of ‘Idomoneo, Re di Creta’) for Munich to a brand-new libretto adapted by Abbe Giambattista Varesco the Italian librettist resident in Salzburg in early August 1780 (premiering in Munich on 26 Jan 1781) - Long story short this magnificent Missa Solemnis in C, K. 337 was completed (having been ‘cut down in a good many places by the Arch-Booby who has the attention-span of a gnat’) just before he was up to his eyes in his new opera - which marked a turning point in his life and whose success evidently went to his head - for M. resign’d his post as ‘Concertmeister’ for the second time from the service of the Prince Archbishop Hieronymus (= ‘Jerome’) Colloredo in June 1781 after being summoned to Vienna from Munich where the archbishop was trying to shew-off his kappelle-but ended in frustration when the Archbishop refused to allow M. to give public concerts attended by Emperor Joseph II - leading to his firing ‘for gross insubordination’ - And the rest is, as they say, history…
