    White has to play b4 first and only then a4, in order to avoid black blocking with a5

    First of all, it should be clear from the beginning which direction the pawn go. I thought the black pawns would go downwards, white pawns upwards.

      Agree. It would be helpful to have the rank numbers and file letters on the board. If you saw that the eighth rank was actually at the bottom of the board it would be obvious.

      I do add a small square next to the board with white or black to indicate whose side we are visiting the board from. The board also has rank and file numbers present there but I guess it is too small and not clearly visible. Thanks for the feedback. I will see how I can address this 🙂

    This could have been used as an example in the chapter "Do Not Hurry" of the book Endgame Strategy by Mikhail Shereshevsky. Having read this book, I might have played 1…a6! in this position, even though I mistakenly thought that 1…K×d5 was winning.

    It's a very instructive study. I felt your "plans for Black" bit missed the most immediate threat. If it were Black to move in the initial position, wouldn't 1. ...g3 draw immediately, because White's pawn would be doomed (unless White played 2. f3, which would immediately lose)? My initial thought was therefore 1. Be2 to control the f3 and g4 squares, but that fails to 1. ...Kf4 and 2. ...g3, and that's when I came to the same conclusion as you - that the Bf1-Bg2 manoeuvre is necessary.

    • @YourAverageChessPlayer
      @YourAverageChessPlayer วันที่ผ่านมา

      Oh yes g3 is an immediate threat too. I just assumed g3 Kf4 would be a transportation. Good catch! ☺️

  • @GaneshRamakrishnanRG

    Lovely selection and elucidation. These simple-looking endgame situations bring out a pattern at the end that then guides the initial moves in all variations but non-experts cannot directly visualize the pattern so we have to muddle through the possibilities and then deduce the clinching position where the game can be a win for White instead of a draw. At some point in future it would be nice to have a 10-min summary video of 3 or 5 King pawn ending patterns that have been covered so far.

  • @martinmelhus7324
    @martinmelhus7324 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

    At 7:35 in the video, Q-c3 isn't mate immediately, black has b2 to block (only legal move, in fact), then Qxb2 mate. Minor clarification.

    I don't understand any of this. Ra1+, followed by Rxa7, followed by Re7, blacks king cant get over to protect the pawn, so rook takes pawn next move, with an easy win following.

    • @YourAverageChessPlayer
      @YourAverageChessPlayer 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Ra1+ Kb3 Rxa7 Kc3 Re7 Kd3 and black queens the pawn or white rook keeps giving check to stop the queening and it's a draw. Ra1+ does not work in this position

  • @Nickulous64
    @Nickulous64 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I think you overcomplicated this. Why Bishop e7? Why not Bishop d6 taking pawn. If king takes Bishop advance Pawn, if not move Bishop to b8 then pawn to a7 and they protect each other. You have all day to take the other pawn with King and then come up to force king away and queen the pawn. Seems faster and easier than the way you did it. But I am a less than average chess player, so I’m sure I am missing something.

    • @YourAverageChessPlayer

      After 1. b6 axb6 2. a6 Kc6 If 3. Bxd6 then Black plays 3. ... b5 4. Bb8 Kb6 5. a7 Kb7 and Black's King will not let go of control of a8 square resulting in a draw through stalemate soon

      Makes sense because it prolongs the game and computers don't concede. It is a check, so white goes Kc3 or someplace to avoid further checks. Queen versus knight is an easy win for white by several strategies.

    Easy. When black does not capture the bishop with the pawn and queens this is a nice variation. 1. Ba1 b5 2. c6 b4 3. c7 b3 4. c8=Q b2 5. Qf5+ Kxa1 6. Qe5 Kb1 7. Qe1# {White mates} 1-0

    1.d6 is the oldest trick in pawn endgames and obviously wins. But I spent some time to figure out how 1.f5 Kc5 2.f6 wouldn't win. After a minute or two, I concluded that it absolutely wins as well and I was right. A proper title would be "Can you not win this endgame as white".

    I actually figured one out! Almost immediately. :D Pawn to d6.. Black is forced to take and the pawn will be in the king's way, preventing him from catching the f-pawn. I did not see how starting with the f-pawn could also win.

  • @ceejay0137
    @ceejay0137 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Very nice! I found the d6 win as you described. I missed the point that with pawns on d5 and f6 the Black king on d6 is blockaded from the e file, and can't take the d-pawn but has to go round via the 8th rank. That gives White time to bring up their king.

    With your final solution, what if you took one move near the end to move your bishop to H5? The black king is too far away to interfere with the pawn, and you could preserve your bishop. Do I read that wrong?

    • @YourAverageChessPlayer
      @YourAverageChessPlayer 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You could preserve the bishop. I guess I gave up the bishop, because I find it easier to just use a king and queen vs king to checkmate. Pretty much auto pilot at that point and not worry about any accidental stalemate.

    Good addition to the series of endgame videos. For better grasp of the first middle game position context, showing the moves from the beginning to that first position being analyzed would have helped, adding a few seconds of animation.
