1. Starting Point: Lucerne to Alpnachstad
The most common way to begin is from Alpnachstad. You can reach Alpnachstad from Lucerne by taking a train (about 20 minutes) or a ferry across Lake Lucerne (around 1 hour).
2. Alpnachstad to Pilatus Kulm Hike
Trail: Alpnachstad - Ämsigen - Pilatus Kulm
Distance: 8 km (5 miles)
Elevation Gain: ~1,650 meters (5,413 feet)
Duration: 4-5 hours depending on pace and breaks
Difficulty: Strenuous; requires good fitness, as it’s a steep ascent.
This route offers diverse landscapes, including forests, open meadows, and stunning alpine views. You’ll eventually reach Pilatus Kulm (2,128 m / 6,982 ft), where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Swiss Alps and Lake Lucerne.
3. Alternative Route: Fräkmüntegg to Pilatus Kulm
If you're looking for a less challenging hike, you can take the Panorama Gondola from Kriens to Fräkmüntegg and hike from there to Pilatus Kulm.
Distance: ~3.5 km (2.2 miles)
Duration: 1-1.5 hours
Difficulty: Moderate; shorter and with less elevation gain.
4. Descending from Pilatus
You can descend on foot, but many hikers opt for the Pilatus Cogwheel Railway (world’s steepest cogwheel railway) down to Alpnachstad or take the cable car and gondola down to Kriens.
