Thanks for your presentation. It's great that you were able to include nonverbal behaviors -- I'm sure these affect the athletes just as much as the verbal behaviors. I'm wondering what types of settings you see using this tool in the future. Is the car ride home the main setting or are there other specific times or places that you're interested in as well?

Thank you for your comment. The purpose of this research is to learn about the daily interactions between parents and children during car rides to and from sport practices and competitions. However, we believe that our coding framework could also be used to learn about interactions between parents and their children during sport competitions (i.e., parents' sideline behaviour). Our coding framework could also be used to analyze the behaviour of sport coaches on the sideline, however, that may require addition of other verbal or non-verbal behaviours that currently are not part of the coding framework (e.g., technical/tactical instructions). I hope that answers your question. Thank you.

Hi Sina, Interesting study! And it appears as though you've gone through a rigorous process to come to your framework. I was curious how you differentiated between statement of fact/opinion and expressions of confidence? I statement such as "you played really well today" seems to feed into both categories. Thanks!

Thank you so much for your comment. In our framework we defined statements of fact as "General statements related to sport". For example a statement like "You scored two goals and had an assist today" would be an example of a statement of fact. We defined expressions of confidence as "Comments that reflect confidence in athlete's ability or reflects the athlete's self-confidence". For example a comment like "You've got this, you're very good" is an example of an expression of confidence. Based on our definitions, the example that you provided "you played really well today" would be coded as a 'general performance praise' which is defined as "positive comments about athlete's performance, without negative evaluation or comments about how to improve". I hope that answers your question. Thank you.

I enjoyed your presentation--what a great research question. Understanding the communication processes and their impact on athletes is certainly important. It reminded me of the early studies used to code coach behaviors. However, coding coach behaviors is a much easier since practice/competition is a much more defined unit of time. Your use of the literature and videos in a naturalistic setting was a great strategy. I was curious though on the process used for the videos (how did you decide where/when to record, the process you used to ensure that parents/kids turned the recorders on...).

Thank you for your comment. Parents were given the camera for 2-3 weeks and we asked that they provide us with at least 6 videos. Parents were asked to turn on the camera as they got in the car and were ready to leave the house, and turn off the camera once they have arrived at their child's sport facility. Parents were also free to record the car ride to and from practices both during the day and evening/night. I hope that answers your question. Thanks.
