I started boating at a young age and have been in professional yachting since January 2014. I made a huge career shift from teaching at a high school in the UK to flying to St Thomas to join 16 other crew members to manage a 200ft Super Yacht. Yes... just like below deck. I started as a Deckhand and went on to be a Bosun and Tender Captain and after seven years of super yacht life, I moved to Orange County, California.

So do you need a license to drive a boat in California? Also if you have a small boat with a small engine do you need a license for that?

@@f1nascar1fan7This appears to be a common misunderstanding. If there's a motor on it, and you're by yourself, you have to have the card, period. The 15 hp thing is for kids. The law is that you can be as young as 16 yrs old and operate a motor with 15 HP or more IF someone else at least 18 yrs old is on the boat, and has THEIR CA Boater ID Card.
Yes, you have to basically have a license -> the CA Boater ID Card.

I’ve also been boating with my own watercraft for over 35 years, now all of a sudden I need a license. Fk CA and their license crap!

According to parks.ca.gov it is only person operating engine size 15hp and higher that is required to have boater card? So why such discrepancy?
Thanks for the comment. Yes there are a number of exemptions. That’s why I refer people to the website to check.
Below 15 HP are usually some jon boats operating in private properties, in-land lakes, or rivers, which are remote to enforce the laws anyway. So, they set the line to 15 HP, and the boat cruising with an engine > 15HP started to get fast. And would you bring a 15 HP boat to the ocean to trigger the coast guard or local police reactions? Very Rare to see that to happen which the law makers deemed to believe you aren't doing it. They won't bother at the end.

No at was all installed by a technician, not me. I was just learning. I think it was to do with the length of cable and poor options. Won’t affect it.
Installing it upside down will make download slow but upload fast instead of vice versa.

Are the bits and mount 316 Stainless? If not, what is the plan to reduce corrosion at the attachment or mounting area?
Yes always use 316 stainless.
Can you list the Starlink equipment that was purchased and used?
STARLINK Flat High Performance Kit w/ Wedge Mount - White. We used a plumbers fish tape and small line to route the cable. A little 4200.

Stupid question, but I’m looking to buy a trawler or sailboat, and live on it. Do I need to get my cbc before I buy it, if I don’t plan on operating the boat? I do plan on getting it and I have some boating experience but wanting to know if it needs to be my first priority.
Hi Lauren, sorry for the delay. No you can get it and then get the CBC. I highly recommend it as a basic safety measure.

Wait is this a problem thats commonly occurring to such a degree that we had to create rules for this? How many people can afford boats, in the same area, to such a degree that with all the space in the ocean they have to squabble over 6 feet of space? o.O O.o
Yes in the open ocean there is a lot of space but in small waterways and lakes not so much. The rules of the road as they are known are international collision regulations so boats, yachts, ships avoid crashing. Thanks for the comment.
