Your a very brave sole taking the cat on a long distance trip without preventive maintenance like plugs, wires, cap and rotor. I always visually check things before ever taking the kitty out. Just my two cents.

That's a failure of the check valve in the smog pump system, causing hot exhaust gases to flow where they don't belong. It's an emissions device whose sole purpose is to reduce emissions during warm-up by injecting fresh air into the exhaust to improve burn of the exiting exhaust gases. The system was designed by General Motors, and Jaguar used the GM system on their cars in the 70's-80's to meet US emission standards. it only functions during warm-up; once the car warms up ii is bypassed. I had a series 3 XJ6 several years ago and I currently have a 5.3 liter XJS with the same system, so I am familiar with it. That manifold pipe with 6 tubes (12 on the XJS) going into the head injects air from a belt-driven pump into the hot exhaust gas during warm-up. Once the car warms up, the pump is bypassed and the check valve is supposed to keep exhaust gases from flowing out. In my XJS, a failed check valve caused hot gases to burn up a bit of my fuel injection harness, so after repairing the wiring I disabled the system by plugging up the 12 supply tubes, then re-assembling the system to pass visual inspection. Plugging up the system reduces the ambient temperature under the hood by preventing a failed check valve from doing what it's doing to your car right now. My state still has biennial smog check requirements, but there is only a visual check of this system because the car has to be at operating temp for smog check and the system is in bypass mode when the car is warm. The easy solution is to delete the system entirely if you are not subject to smog inspections, or . The car does not need the system to run properly. replace the check valve and hoses.
