In 1818, German composer Franz Gruber wrote the immortal words to this standard Christmas carol that is now known worldwide. It was first recorded in 1905 and has been recorded over 137,000 times since then. In 1981, 21 year old composer Daniel Kantor wrote Night of Silence while spending time in a small chapel while on a musical retreat. The light shining through the chapel's stained glass windows reminded Daniel of Christmas, and the counter melody to Night of Silence was born.
