The Haranpur railway bridge is a very beautiful example of the old railway bridges made of iron, constructed during the British era. It was probably constructed in 1886 - 1887. The project engineers were James Ramsay, Engineer-in-Chief, Frederick Robert Upcott, Engineer-in-Charge of the Bridge, Mr. Boydell, Executive Engineer and Mr. J. Spence, Sub-Engineer. Rudyard Kipling reports a speech by the Chief Engineer, James Ramsay, in which various delays and accidents are mentioned, including having to wait for the girder-work not arrived from England. It was also known as Victoria Bridge in early records. It is a piece of wonderful engineering, worth watching with a beautiful Scenery of River Jhelum flowing underneath.
In May 1887, Victoria Bridge was completed over the Jhelum river between Malakwal and Chak Nizam and a railway line was constructed from Malakwal - Khushab. In 1939, Haranpur bridge (Victoria bridge) had to be completely re girdered on the old piers when the bridge proved to be incapable of taking increased rail traffic.
It was a vital link in the Sind-Sagar Railway that merged to form the North Western Railway(NWR) and became the NWR 'Sind-Sagar Branch'.
The only way of crossing the river for the people of the area for the last few decades has been the railway’s Haranpur (Victoria) Bridge near Chak Nizam which they mostly cross on foot and motorcycles as only two trains were ply on the route daily but, unfortunately rail operations on this route are currently suspended.
