You cannot buy a piece of land in Tonga, but you can lease it for 99 years subject to approval by the Cabinet. Tonga somehow has a feudal kind of ownership which means titles/properties are passed and inherited only to next of kins. Men usually have the rights of the land under their constitution.

I was born in Lifuka in 1952 when my father, SALESI MANOA HAVEA, was Police Magistrate and Acting Governor of the Ha'apai group during the reign of Queen SALOTE TUPOU III. We left Ha'apai for TONGATAPU when I was only a few months old but promised myself I will take my family there one day. My husband Dennis John Cook's ancestors are originally from Great Britain and they are related to the Great Captain James Cook. Of course history records Captain James Cook named Ha'apai the Friendly Islands in 1777. He just couldn't get over how the Tongan people were so friendly and would give up their all for him and his sailors. I don't have to remind any Tongan that's the spirit and 'osikiavelenga we only find in the Friendly Islands broadly known as the KINGDOM OF TONGA! My father's favourite hymn 663, TAMA 'E NGALO 'A FE NAI AHO NE TO 'A E AFA, ANGI MEI MU'A 'A E MATANG, VAKA NE 'IKAI TAUALA? KA NE FAFANA 'A LANGI MO U VILI ATU KIMU'A, HE KO E KAU MATATALI TE NAU A'USI FONUA ......... Perhaps after all this is over we can all come home to help with the recovery and rebuilding of our most most beloved Friendly Islands. LONG LIVE THEIR MAJESTIES AND & FALE O HAA MOHEOFO! OUR HEARTS AND PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU ALL AT THIS MOST CHALLENGING AND DIFFICULT TIME.
