P3 Orion at Brunswick Naval Air Station
So great to see a P-3 Orion on the ramp in Brunswick, Maine. This is the former Brunswick Naval Air Station, and P-3s were the resident squadrons back in the glory days of the cold war. The long probe out the tail is a magnetometer, this airplane could detect the presence of a submarine under twater by detecting the perturbation of the Earth's magnetic field. Living right under the approach path to Brunswick Naval Air Station, I used to watch these amazing airplanes fly by our place on the cove as they were coming back from their sub-hunter missions.

    Fantastic Video, Mark. Thanks for the excellent preparation. Flew Zuni Point Corridor south, then Dragon Corridor north, a week and a half ago in my RV-7, between about 0945 - 1030 local time. Beautiful views that my son and I will not soon forget - pics and videos are great, but the human eye sees it better!

    Excellent video Mark. Filmed well and great verbal nav aid. This flight has been on my bucket list, so very disappointed to find out my carb won't work well enough at the required altitudes, especially with density figured in.

    Great video very helpful saved me hours of studying the Grand Canyon Air Space to determine a flight plan. Wondering what type of plane you were in and what the service ceiling is. Thanks for the great work.

      Mary, so glad it was helpful to you. How did your flightseeing go? I filmed these segments from a turbocharged Cessna 210, service ceiling is 31,000 feet (no-one flies 210s up that high...) and it does make Grand Canyon flightseeing easier to have good climb performance in the high teens.       Gary, you're right, the terrain inside the canyon is inhospitable with very few good options for a forced landing. Much better at the plateau level, particularly the south rim, as it's less wooded than the north rim. The river might seem like the best ditching point, but it's cold and fast-moving, and it would be quite a feat of piloting to dead-stick it into the Colorado successfully. So... the Grand Canyon is not a good place for the noisy fan to get quiet. Best to you! Thanks for the comment.

    Daniel, the corridor altitudes are specified for direction of your crossing, so you should have 1,000 feet of separation from traffic going the opposite direction in the same corridor. There's a small inset box on the special VFR chart that shows them. Southbound traffic should be at 10,500' or 12,500' MSL, northbound traffic should use 11,500' or 13,500' MSL. Have a great flight!
