Big headshot job lighting test in my tiny apartment

    Those ice picks aren't going to allow you to climb anything, you'll need something that can more effectively drag the vehicle forwards. Perhaps add a rotating pick assembly to the arms as the wheels won't grip ice at even a small angle from within water, especially not once you start adding a payload.

    • @bc4198

    The default really should have been skid steer. Watching it spin a single tire is making my skin crawl. They may have done away with differentials, but should not have done away with differential lockers. See quad- versus dual-motor testing in Rivians, Swin-car ATV, and "chainlink" rock crawler, for further reference. Also, outriggers are always helpful on boats, especially if they're funky ones like this! I bet some actuators like on the ice axes would also support retractable outrigger floats.

      @@tristan_vineyThat's a mighty kind response to a stranger grousing at you on the Internet 😊. Looking again, by the time the ice picks were installed, it appears they may have already addressed the issue of driving all the wheels... Maybe 😉... In the shot of it getting onto the rock, it looks like the fronts are maybe spinning in unison, but not faster than the rear 🤔 9:04 -ish: Tire pressure can make a difference, sure, but I really think the bigger issue was having too few driving wheels. It looked like the first test either didn't have the fronts driven at all, or maybe at the software level they had designed it to mimic open differentials instead of locked diffs. I would have been tempted to do an MVP / prototype by building floats onto an ATV. At least then the off-road functionality would be basically guaranteed as a baseline. Two more examples to look at, off the top of my head, are the Argo 6x6 and the Marsh Master. And for the ability to climb up onto things, I'd have to consider the triangular three-wheeled assemblies that some stair-climbing dollies use. (They look like big fidget spinners). It could even be a potential inspiration just for the ice axes. 💭💡

      No worries! I didn’t take it personally. I’m a big fan of WAL-LE, but it’s not actually my creation - I’m just the guy who made the documentary. So all these ideas on how to improve the design are really interesting to see and I’ll pass onto the EDL team. Who knows, maybe there’ll be a WAL-LE 2.0 that can implement some of these awesome suggestions!

  • @Zachry86

    As a mech engineer with some offroad experience as a hobby. I would be concerned with ground clearance. I like the concept, but putting all your electronics on the exposed bottom will put it at risk and also reduce ground clearance. But it does give you a super low point of gravity :-) Is it supposed to autonomously carry payloads or just to be a "donkey" to carry loads with people in close proximity? Its a bit difficult to understand its purpose other than being an awsome vehicle. Really cool project. Can see a lot of work has been put into this before any steel was actually cut.

    • @bc4198
      @bc4198 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, electric means it can be charged by any source, which will probably sometimes be diesel - as well as solar, wind, power from the ship, power from bases, etc. If they were going to regularly use it somewhere, they could also deploy a solar (or diesel) charging stations, like those being done by Jeep, Rivian, Tesla, etc.

    • @tristan_viney
      @tristan_viney 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great points! My understanding is the battery would be swapped or charged from the ship it would be deployed from. The arctic eco system, particularly the permafrost, is also very sensitive to pollution, which is why the EDL team built an EV prototype.

    • @bc4198
