Another New Year arrives. For many a melancholy time that brings us to tears. But our God knows our sorrows, our worries, our fears, and promises to turn those tears to cheers as we praise him forevermore.

The examples of Samuel and Jesus provide us with a model of how we too can grow in God through faithful service and obedience to Him.

The joy we experience at Christmas is not just found in the presents we receive from family and friends. The real joy is in the deep transformation that Christ brings to our lives.

We don't need to fear the future when we trust in Jesus. He came to us and set us free, now he has promised his return.... and he won't let us down.

We usually associate kings with power dominance and authority. However, in John 18:33-37, Jesus reveals to us a radically different example of kingship, one that is defined by servanthood, an example, we are all called to follow.

When Noah is asked to build the ark he is given very specific instructions. It must have been tempting to give up or to cut corners but Noah does neither. He trusts the plan and God gets him and his family home. God has a plan for us to see us safely home. We have to trust the plan, but above all to trust the man, Jesus.

Jesus warned us there would be wars and rumours of wars, famines and disasters. But the suffering we endure will not destroy the Christian, in fact that "suffering produces perseverance, perseverance; character and character; hope".

Jesus is asked what the Greatest Commandment is? Essentially his answer asks us to love. Love God, love our neighbour, love ourselves. Sounds simple.....but in reality how easy is it to do that?

Ambition can be healthy but sometimes, as we see from our reading this morning it can also be very unhealthy. Unlike James and John we should all seek to be ambitious, ambitious to serve the God and others rather than ourselves.

The search for eternal life is an ancient one and today that search continues. Yet, Mark 10:17-31 provides us with the answer to this question. An answer that is both simple and challenging.

The joy God gives does not run out, it is a constant supply like a fountain that springs eternally. The joys the world offers are fleeting and so often counterfeit. Ask God for the real thing!

God's peace doesn't always come to us "peacefully" or gently just as a river isn't always calm. But after the storm subsides and the river stops raging we will know a peace that will flow eternally and never dry up.

Jesus demonstrates his commitment to those who are different, and he calls on us to share his commitment to others. There are many in our society today who are seen as downtrodden or marginalised and we have a duty to reach out to them in love .

The book of Proverbs contains this advice, "Above all else, guard your heart......" Why does this mean and why does it matter? Is the heart itself the symptom or the source of the problem?
