This Theory is Transforming Guitar Playing (Barry Harris' Creation Theory)
มุมมอง 47K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
The family of Dominants is derived from a diminished chord. This powerful theory impacted my playing so much that I had to make this video. Also because I agree with those who say that many modern jazz guitarists sound like Pat Metheny or Allan Holdsworth. Even Pat Metheny himself admits this (in his Rick Beato interview). There’s nothing wrong with modal interchange-it can be beautiful-but it ...

Guitarists never showed me the "Obvious Chords"

How does a Jazz beginner play a 2-5-1 without learning the basic chords and scale degrees first? Beginners are so often taught a million methods before learning these essential 4 note chords of a key. You need to practise the "simple" chords if you want to play any kind of chord progression.
I overfocused on 251. This Trick changed the game.
มุมมอง 6K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
Secondary Dominants as well as Secondary 251's can change the game for every guitarist. Everybody talks about Secondary Dominants but no-one explains how they can transform your entire perception of Music. This video takes a closer look at a specific chord progression and makes easy to play suggestions for you to put onto your fretboard. This video will be followed up by Secondary 251's as well...

I understood so many amazing Pat Martino lines after I discovered this easy trick! But improvising with it is not a piece of cake. Take your time and start making your own phrases built on the idea described in this video. Thank you for watching!

Happy New Year Luminous Dude! 🤙🏼
Thank you 😅 Happy New Year to you too!
These videos are over my head and I'm hooked regardless. I don't even need to learn this stuff. Just knowing that one day maybe I could is enough for me
Thank you! I will try to make this content as easy as possible in future. I am sure you will pick up and prevail! Good luck
Is it just me or does the low E string sound out of tune
Haha this is amazing yet painful for me. Entertaining, and hugely educational. Really funny and to the point. Thank you for this. Subbed.
Thank you! And thank you so much for sharing my channel! I will check out your channel asap! Happy new year!
i dont know how you make barry harris so easy but iits amaziing
I'm a bit of a jazz noob. I just figured out a bunch of these shapes recently so this video is particularly useful to me but I was wondering if there's a reason to call a C6 (for example) a C6 and not an inverted Am7? I understand they're the same notes and I understand that the C6 has the C in the bass therefore it's a C6 but I learned these shapes as inversions is all. Just wondering if there's any specific reason to the naming of the chords
barry harris theory, there's a lot of videos on it but more to the point. C6 using the dim6 (making a 7 note scale into 8 by adding a b6) and going up and down the scale with C6 as your base makes a bunch of inversions. One of them is Am7. There's a lot more to it but that's the basics, and it means we can play any of those inversions if the score calls for C6
I didn’t understand this one… are you just telling don’t do only drop 2 ? But mix with drop 3 ? I’m going again… thanks anyway, always opening new doors. And what is behind ? A new door, as you know 😂
No worries, my friend-thank you for your honesty, and best of luck as you continue your search for the next step! This video was really just a brief introduction to the direction I want to take in future lessons. The main idea here was simply to combine two voicings for smoother voice leading. I'll be building on this concept in upcoming videos, but-I’ll be taking things nice and slow. This channel is for people who, like me, prefer a slower pace. If you’re more advanced, though, I highly recommend checking out one of my favorite educators, Ted Greene. He was absolutely brilliant! Cheers and Happy New Year!
love your content, just subscribed. This under 3 minutes format is perfect. thanks mate
Cheers mate! Happy New Year
Another dose of total excellence. Love it. I think I might be just under the level you’re pitching at but you’re giving me the sense that I can stretch for it. I’ve just spent 30 minutes on the three or four seconds from 00:31… Missing scale notes? What scale? Is it like a C bebop scale with an A flat in it? There’s an a flat diminished chord at the 11th fret… I’m running at .75 speed and it still flies by! This is by no means criticism. Not at all. You’re admirably concise and the content here is just invaluable. I’ll get back to work. MANY thanks!
Ah! Got it. Barry Harris! Onwards and upwards!
@@nonenone-dk5dw exactly! It‘s simply drop 2 voicings from Barry Harris’ 6th diminished. I thought I made that clear, sorry. It gives you an additional note just like you noticed. Just play them as drop 3 voicings in addition to the drop 2 voicings so that you can come up with better voice leading. That’s basically all i am saying 😅 happy new year!
@ I am Captain Dunning-Kruger! I’m going to very happily write all this out to make sure I’ve got the voicings and then I’ll start applying it. The material is really clearly presented, it’s just still fairly new to me. Many thanks again for this one and all the very best for 2025. .
@@nonenone-dk5dw😂😂I feel like Dunning-Kruger every year… I will make more easy videos with clear voicing animation soon. Maybe even better explanations for the voicings, so don’t write out too much please. Captain Obvious used Secondary Dominants in the London Bridge example with drop 2 and 3. So if you want that sound check out the video that I called… i overfocused on 251… i think 😅
@ I’m going to decode it and turn it into magic! 😂😂🤣 Looking forward to whatever cones next. It’s a genuinely innovative format and brilliantly executed. I’m as slow as a week in the jail - that’s the only problem! 🤦♂️
I feel like I'm going to have to watch this video 10 times at least.

I cant wait for a new video. I just saw another Barry Harris video that was really confusing because the guy was giving each diminished chords an element name like Earth Wind and Fire. I know he meant well but it wasn’t productive for me at all. Makes me appreciate this channel even more.
Thank you! I've made confusing videos myself, and it's easy to get carried away in this fast-paced media world so I feel for him 😅. My new video is uploading - it should be up in the next hour. Please let me know if it is confusing

Wow!! A fantastic video/guitar lesson. 👍👍 How about, when you get time, giving some improvisation instruction, on a 2 5 1, using the family of dominants. That would be awesome too... Thanks😊

Thank YOU, Barry and Froggy 😊 Plans for a patreon? While my GuitarPro tab writing skills are improving every time I transcribe one of your videos, it would be nice to just have them available so I can spend that time practicing instead of clicking the mouse 😅
This content is great, transcriptions would be so useful.
Working on it. Thank you! 😊
Yes some kind of reference material would open these videos up to a wider audience of less skilled guitarists and those who don't have formal experience. That way everyone will get something out of the video
@siddharths8008 ya I would actually kick a few bucks to his patreon for gpx files.
My favorite channel also. All within 3 minutes. Still waiting for your patreon.... Might as well try adding a link. Ask Froggy I think he'll agree.
