Although small stream fly fishing is what I love doing the most and what I mainly focus on, I created this channel with the intention of being open to all types of fishing. Whether it's with a spinning rod, fly rod, or with casting gear. Freshwater or salt, mountain streams to the surf, my goal is to do a little bit of everything and keep learning along the way. Hope you enjoy all of my adventures.
Wild Trout in the Santa Ana River?? TIPS on how to catch them (Santa Ana River, Angelus Oaks CA)
Filmed early this winter. Decided to head up to the Santa Ana River to do some fly fishing. It's been a struggle to catch fish here in the last few years so I wanted to show you guys some tips on how to catch more fish, not only here, but in small streams in general. As expected, it was challenging, but these fish were here and thriving as long as I managed not to spook them. Caught over a dozen fish but only showed half of what I caught in this video.

A day fly fishing at a local stream
มุมมอง 4.6K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Spent a day fly fishing at one of my local streams. Had tons of fun catching fish on the dry dropper and euro nymph rig. Out of the two, euro nymphing was the most effective technique. Caught mostly small ones that were around 3-5" and some bigger ones in the 6-9" range. For the sake of the video length, I only showed a portion of what I actually caught, which was close to around 50 fish. Gear ...

Small Stream Trout Fishing in Southern California
มุมมอง 2.1K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Filmed back in October 2020. I originally scrapped this edit because most of the color in the footage was blown out and looked awful from recording in the wrong camera settings. After more than a year passing by, I decided to go back and color correct everything as best as I could. So if you're wondering why the color and video quality looks off, that is why. I didn't want this footage to go to...
High flows.. Slow day.. Tight Line Nymphing the Upper Owens River
มุมมอง 8703 ปีที่แล้ว
Day 2/2 of a quick trip to the Eastern Sierra. Fished the Upper Owens River in the morning/afternoon and ended the trip there. Flows were high and apparently that kills the bite but still managed to catch a handful of fish in the morning. Bite completely died in the afternoon. Fun trip overall and hopefully the next time I'll get into some decent sized fish. Gear Used: Rod - Orvis Clearwater 10...
Less than an hour to fish, almost got skunked!
มุมมอง 7663 ปีที่แล้ว
Decided to go up to Hot Creek after fishing at Cottonwood Creek for the first part of the day. We got there late and only had less than an hour of daylight to fish. Somehow managed to hook into a nice fish as we were about to leave! Fly Fishing for Bass TRAPPED in Shallow Water (Rescued Them)
มุมมอง 6603 ปีที่แล้ว
Went fishing at a spot that usually dries out when we don't get rain. The fish are attracted to the fresh oxygenated water and take the opportunity to swim upstream when the water flow is high during a rain storm. After about a day, the water levels normalize and become too shallow with small boulders blocking the pathway back to the lake. Unless it keeps raining, any fish that stay there will ...

Where do you access the creek?
Good video. Thanks for the info man. So many people wig out when you give locations. 90 percent of people won't even try because of the effort it takes to get to those spots.
1:30 that undercut though!!!!
Stop saying the name u fucking idiot
whyd you stop posting
Love it
There are creeks that most people think do not hold fish. Surprise! Seriously.
good to see its recovering from the fires
this was posted 2 years ago and im worried what bear creek looks like now.. :(
Awful lot of rod for such small fish
Good Advice! Such a shame this place is DESTROYED now, I dont think any of the fish survived last years storms
Mind giving the general area? Thank you
Can you drop the location on google maps?
I’m glad you were able to show those people that there are fish
Great job first time seeing your channel I’m subscribing
Very nice release and care not to let them bang on rocks, i love santa Ana river, spent years hiking and fishing like you, release everything
Around where was this spot....?
Awesome video mate! New subscriber
Where's this spot at?Looks like a good spot for some bass fishing 🎣
you euro nymphing?
Just texted you on Instagram bro 🫡 hopefully I can get a reply back
I see a lot of people complaining on why he doesn’t give out the spot , true fishermen know why , especially with wild trout . Don’t burn the spot bro it looks clean and no trash at all keep it like that .
That's a river?
Yep it originates in these mountains and eventually turns into a full size river once it makes it’s way down to the ocean
are you sight fishing? i was up there today and didnt see a single fish (granted its december)
They’re really good at hiding/blending into the surroundings so most of the time I never see them. But I just try to fish the nicer looking runs, riffles, or pools that might hold fish. However I’ve heard that the stream has been wiped out recently, probably from flash flooding. Haven’t been back there since earlier this year so not sure what it looks like. Might need some time to recover again though.
Let'm go. A stream like that can get fished out a lot faster than many think. And counter to what many think, keeping the big ones is the fastest way to deplete wild fish. Because only the larger fish spawn. No spawning, no wild, stream native fish. Best to reserve fresh caught trout for very special occasions - if at all. Most dedicated trout fishermen eventually get to the point of this realization. Better to have a stream full of trout than a belly full of trout you'll never see again. Sometimes if you're fishing wet flies or nymphs, it can be better to cast from upstream. That way the line isn't so much in the fish's sight. And the "plop" isn't right over them. And from upstream, it's easier to add some squirming action to the nymph fly. Of course you may have to kneel low and even duck down to keep out of their sight.
Thats not a rainbow !!!!!!
Would love to hear your thoughts on what you think it is :)
Cutthroat if I were to guess, where is this ? Lahontan cutthroat are native to CA ! Others too .depends where you are . Whatever it is you really caught a dream of every angler's lifetime .@@makethecast
Lahontan cutthroat ? Coastal Cutt! Depends where this is ! I do know that was a fish of a lifetime considering !!! @@makethecast
@@markskibo5159 Looks like a cutt, just without the typical red slash underneath the lower jaw! I've read somewhere that there was a special strain of trout from the upper south fork of the Santa Ana river that resembled the cutthroat, but thought to be extinct now, the last specimen being caught in the early 1900's. Think it was named the San Gorgonio trout.
I know they’re rainbow trout but damn they sure look like redband trout in these streams
What way to spend a day, get up before the rooster starts his, pack a lunch and head out to a secluded creek or stream in So Cal🤗
How do I get ti this place what’s a near by area I can use as reference
Wow, that go pro makes the flat earth look like a globe. Ever try a 1or 2wt? probably be more fun on those small fish. Still it's all about the take. Cheers?
To bad I have a balance issues would love to be out their flying 😞
Hope you feel better and research vitamins you can take I think accanatia or saint John's wort works for balance.
Nice video. Where did you park to get to that part of the river?
Thanks for watching. The parking lot at the Bridge to Nowhere trailhead is where I parked and I hiked up the East Fork Trail as if I was going to Bridge to Nowhere. I just fished along the way.
So rad. What's your rod set up
I just started getting into fly fishing great job out there man keep up the good work on you videos.
East fork?
awsome vids bro! do you use barbless hooks ??
Thank you! Yes I fish barbless
Is the west fork on the San Gabriel river still closed? Thank you.
Where did you park?
Bridge to Nowhere Trailhead parking lot
Great stuff dude🤙🏽
Is the west fork still washed out? I haven’t been to CA in a little while and I’m hoping to visit this spring.
Yeah it's been pretty bad weather up there and the water is brown in the west fork, but crystal clear on the east fork.
Yup, haven’t been there at all lately but like Peter who commented before me, I’ve been hearing it’s still not great. However, I went to East fork last month and water was flowing fast and clear. We’re getting some record rain/snow here in CA this winter. This coming spring will be nice.
Lytle creek or Santa ana
I dont know and want to know.
A quick google search away and you can probably find exactly where I'm at if you take the time to explore. That is how I find these spots. You can too. Here's an article I found just by searching "trout fishing mountains of southern california" These are the places that I fish. www.flyfisherman.com/editorial/southern-californias-winter-trout/455455
can you eat this fish or is it inligal?
If you have a fishing license then you can keep and eat them if you want. Although there won’t be much meat on there to eat unless you catch a big one.
So is his type of people that act like this like they are so uptight about the place is the fish like it’s really that big of a secret dude just share the fishing spot it’s not like a lot of people fish anymore these days and for the people who do they would love to know but it’s always this kind of person who Ruins the good sport fishing
What’s so hard about going out and exploring for yourself? It’s all part of the experience of fishing. I’d rather show people that spots like this exist and encourage them to get out and experience it for themselves. And if they do manage to find it then that’s the reward for their dedication. If I can find spots like this myself then so can you. It’s really not that hard. People nowadays just want it easy and rather have things handed down to them. To me THAT ruins the sport of fishing. If anyone really wants to know that bad all you have to do is be cool and send me a private message, I probably would’ve told you depending on the type of person you are. Some social skills can get you pretty far.
It's always good to know the water holes because war breaks out and things get crazy. You have some fresh fish to feed your family.
Successful anglers have learned that it is best to position yourself above and to one side of the trout. Then make a cast with a good bit of slack, allowing the fly to approach first.
Always, let me know where is fishing spot. It is most important fishing story .
how do you like that okuma crisium? seriously considering it! nice video!
Great rod for the value! I don't use it very much anymore, but in the time that I used it, it performed just as good if not better than some rods that are twice the price. Appreciate you watching!
Tried to send a message to Josh on Instagram went to the East Fork today. Did you go to the top parking lot? And...when you did, did you go the right, facing the mountains on the trail past the locked gate? Reason I'm asking I went to the left and went down the hill next to the outhouse, and it was quite a hike to the river...and I did not see any of the signs Josh posted on the video. Also, was this video made before the Bobcat fires or afterward? Let me know...I got skunked and did not get any bites using size 22 bead heads and the river flowed very, very fast. Thanks for any input about which way you left the parking area and I do not even know if you went as far up to the parking area as well.
Hey Danny, yes at the parking lot, you start up the trail passed the locked gate. This is the trail head to “Bridge to Nowhere”. After about a mile or so up the trail you will see the signs that are in the video. From there, the river starts to flow next to the trail with lots of easy access spots. Just keep hiking as if you’re going to bridge to nowhere and you’ll find some good spots along the way. This video was filmed in January 2021 after the Bobcat fire. East fork did not get affected by the Bobcat fire. You may have to hike further up since these areas are less affected by fishing pressure. Hope this helps.
Great video! Happy to see there are still fish in the river and in the same pools that I used to fish. i love the beauty of those native trout! My dad started taking me fishing there when I was three years old, and I caught my first fish there at age four. We used to go there to fish on opening day of the fishing season as they used to stock a lot of large trout. I fished there almost weekly, from 1951 to 1976 before moving on to bigger lakes and streams. I am 75 years old now and still fishing.
Greetings from California Mr. TheCast, when can we expect some new videos?
Greetings Mr. Duenas. New videos are on the way. Please stay tuned and thank you for the support ❤
Wassup, just went up there today, finally caught my first SoCal brown and it was on a dry fly. Only caught one tho, spooked maybe 20 . Thx for the tips man, definitely be back there soon.
That's awesome man great job. Yeah they're pretty tough to catch since they're so spooky but I'm glad the tips helped. Congrats on your first one!
