Pterocarya fraxinifolia Wingnut tree. Abbotsbury Gardens Dorset. There were 2 trees in the garden probably the same age. One at the top, one at the bottom of the garden. Both close to water which they like. Unfortunately the finest one near the entrance at the top of the garden was cut down for fear it was no longer safe. Just a short video to remember how magnificent it was.

I have so many beautiful memories of the paddle steamers on school holidays going “doon the watter” to Dunoon, where the family had a wee cottage called Glenartney. I eventually joined the Merchant Navy and my home port was the Clyde. Magic memories.

Every summer, from the early 80s until the early 2000s, me, my schoolmates and our families and neighbours, took the Waverly or Balmoral from Swansea to Ilfracombe for a glorified pub crawl lol. Each year, my dad and I would buy a watch from Britton's jewellers on the corner and of course, we all had Fish n' chips on the seafront. I'm 60 this year. My folks and most of my neighbours, are long gone and I now live in Brunei. They were great days.

I went on holiday as a boy in the 1960s to Rothesay with my parents, grandparents, brothers & sister on the Waverley, which made a stopover at Wemyss Bay! (It's to bad the boat didn't fly a SCOTTISH flag instead of that English red rag.)

Great video. I can see my father who was Chief Engineer on the Caledonia from around 1954 until she was withdrawn in 1969. Shortly afterwards, when the Chief on the Waverley retired, my father was asked to become her Chief, and was so until she was sold to the Trust for £1. I spent two wonderful summer seasons working as Deck Boy on the fabulous Duchess of Hamilton. Thanks for the memories.

(which I still attend over forty years later) There have been 44 years of fabulous niters since 1980 and umpteen new discoveries since that cannot be dismissed as "went downhill after that .....

The "rarest of the rare" tag meant that the records played were all on their original labels rather than being rare as such , it was the beginning of the OVO b*ll*cks that followed and the birth of the soul police.

I was in Oban High School at the time, and the old King George had finished her season for tourists to cruise. We could hear her blowing her horn all the way down the Sound of Kerrera, as she left for Greenock till next year's tourists arrived. She was a lovely ship, and had gone to Dunkirk during the WW2, to take the troops back to England, with the German army hard on their heels.

Great film of that period. Saw the Waverley calling in at Whitstable 3 weeks ago! Once went to Tighnabruach in 1960 on the Talisman from Gourock, when on a school holiday to Scotland from London. I can also recall seeing the trams in Glasgow. I was 11 at the time, but that trip has always stayed with me as the best day of the holiday! Coincidentally my first job when leaving school was in the Marine Dept of the old Board of Trade and my role was typing and sending out of these ships' annual passenger certificates renewals.

What a wonderful tourist attraction this would be if there was daily steam paddleboat ferry plying this route from Easter to October. Funny to think that such services were once very common along the South Coast - some of the paddleboats even did day trips to France. Several even helped evacuate Dunkirk in 1940.

An absolutely amazing video, brought me back to my childhood memories of holidays in Lochranza and Oban. I sailed to Campbeltown on the Duchess of Hamilton, sailed on the King George V from Oban, and once when she worked a season on the Clyde. Also on the Queen Mary 2nd and Waverley. I've sailed on Waverley recently and hope to sail on Queen Mary when she's restored. And hopefully on the Maid of the Loch too.
