1987 Mazda RX7 Disassembly and Primer

It's time to strip the car down to its parts so we can prime it. For the record, I'm not a painter. I'm completely into uncharted territory for myself, so this is a giant experiment, which is a dangerous proposition when I'm painting somebody else's car...

Lowering Bryson's 1987 Mazda RX7 FC
มุมมอง 3233 หลายเดือนก่อน
I spend a lot of time thinking about what Bryson would do to this car if he were here working on it himself. The mechanical stuff is pretty straightforward - just make it work! The cosmetics are a little trickier. For the 70, I believe the windshield sizes between fastbsck and coupe are different? That being said how would you go about converting the size of the A pillars in order to fit the windshield of the fastback?
The coupe windshield is reused. The A pillars and front cross member stay in place.
you got this dad!!! Can't wait to see the finished product
Thanks for the encouragement. I think we're going to make it!!
Awesome work! What Japan site do you use to order the parts
Also wear a mask! that can really mess up your system
Mostly eBay. :)
Yeah, I usually do. That said, the primer is pretty benign. If it was paint, I would have stopped and pit the mask on.
Alright let’s gooo!!!
We're getting close!
I love watching you guys make progress on this thing. I bought my own and haven’t touched it yet, but I know when he’s back from his mission his face is gonna shine like nothing else
Thanks for tuning in, man. I'm stoked to see his reaction!
If you want a youtube series definitelly do the swap. otherwise just keep it. its too much work otherwise.
A swap would make for some fun content, for sure. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. And thanks for tuning in.
Headers look like bbk to me or the driver side is what i saw
That could very well be. Or even kooks.
Keep the original 68 interior!!! You will love it a lot more!!!
That's an interesting perspective. The old interiors are interesting to look at, but they're definitely not as comfortable to drive. The interior is the last thing to happen, so I guess we have a lot of time to think about that one. Thanks for tuning in!
did you buy it from copart? i thought you cant by salvage cars without a dealers license.... This will be a cool build looking forward to it.
Yes, I bought it from Copart. I had to use a broker as an intermediary. It's kind of dumb, but it is what it is. Thanks for tuning in!
Too slow pick it up a little
Lol. My wife says the same thing. :). Thx for the feedback.
I'd go with plan D, sell it to me!
The number of cars a man should have can be defined using the following firmula: n + 1 where n = the number of cars a man currently has.
Koolest dad
<blushing> Thanks for tuning in.
Are you going to go full rs on it? With the rs tail panel?
That's the plan!
68 is the best. Just starting my build on one. No wing window and rounded fenders are the best. And I hate the 69 tailights
Sounds like we're together on this one...
Cool project. Looks pretty solid. 👍
Thx for tuning in!
You know, after all this is done. You're going to have to buy yourself an rx7. :)
Not gonna lie - I'm emotionally attached. :)
I had an opportunity to see this Caddy this week while buying a 1983 Mercedes-Benz 240D from the same owner. This Caddy is spectacular in person for sure. Did you build the car or just do some of the work for the current owner? Did the full restoration and customization take place in Utah with a local builder? Great Work, btw. Fun Video too.
I didn't build it. Dallas, who I kind of interview in the video, built it. He hired out a few things, most notably the paint and interior. But he designed it and built it himself. He's currently doing another one for the same owner, but this time it's a convertible.
8:02 I remember I used to do that when my car was running. This time, I will add a fuel pump kill switch near the driver area. Also I never premixed and that's something I will definitely start doing since we got rid of the Oil Metering Pump in this latest rebuild!
Funny thing, those rotaries...
Super helpful video! Currently dealing with the same problem
Oh, so glad it was helpful. Good luck with it!
Omg the journey shall be long and arduous 😥
She's a beaut, isn't she? Long and arduous... and fun? :)
This car makes Lane Meyer's Better Off Dead car look dang good. (And that's <i>before</i> Lane and Monique worked on it.) You're going to need more than just a french citizen who knows how to fix cars. :-)
Well, let's go ahead and find the cute french girl and see where it goes from there.
Project man! Airbags! Had them on my lemans 73’.
Funny you should mention airbags. This car has air shocks. Just noticed them yesterday.
Almost there!
Definitely on the home stretch!
Grat work, it' astonishing!!! This mean that good old Cady or other cars can be retrofitted with modern technology but keeping their original style. So cool👍👍👍!!! P.S.: I'm in love with '50s Cadys thanks to the comic XENOZOIC TALES and the CADILLACS & DINOSAURS franchise!!!
Thanks for tuning in!
Here we go! Have you decided on a color? Or is it a surprise?
Yes. :)
Are you still working on the CM400? Just bought one for 350, gonna pick it up coming monday. Eager to start working on it so even more eager to get some of that good hands-on info on the thing :D
Ha. Hands on. Well played. The CM400 is still sitting in my shop, but it hasn't been touched for quite a while. I'll see if I can encourage a little activity on it. Congrats on the purchase!
@@some-guys-garage 😄 Looking foward to it! ❤️
Great video and was wondering which rear spoiler youre running?
It's an re amemiya. Or a replica. I don't really know. th-cam.com/video/rycb5RvFvho/w-d-xo.html
There a brown wire n the pressure sensor harness sílice it and ground it to one of the bolts on the coolant cap on the motor. Most things run on ground on that car.
Thx
16:58 The market is stupid.
Amen, brutha. Completely nuts.
Crazy how small that engine looks dont look much bigger than a riding lawnmower engine.
They are tiny. Lots of power for their size... if they run... :)
@someguyzgarage these cars hold a special memory for me my dad's boss let him drive his sons car for a while and he took me to school in it a few times I'll never forget I thought I was it.
Im trying to wrap my head around how in the world you're getting that birds eye view shot.
Take a look at this one, toward the end. That might help. th-cam.com/video/v5GyMhzfGBg/w-d-xo.html
@someguyzgarage yes sir I seen it there's still some kind of magic going on 😆
It is a little bewildering. :)
This is such a hidden gem channel
Dang, thanks for the encouragement, brutha.
Love the watching these videos 🫶🏽🙏
Thanks for tuning in!
Is it numbers matching? :)
Funny you should ask. For the record, law enforcement does not want a freshly stamped VIN on a new frame. No, they want you to cut the VIN plate/stamp out of the original frame and weld it onto the new frame. It's a little irritating.
I love how I started watching this before I bought my 89 vert, I ended up rebuilding it and trying to full resto just like this and I ended up just getting it to fire a few days ago and it’s almost been a year with my car, June 26th❤
There's nothing like having a deadline to make sure things get done!
hi, I want to do the same thing - can you send me a copy of your map?
Of course. drive.google.com/file/d/1QYvrK44cNC0hBSvVXLmFTuNCwfMSIKmH/view?usp=drive_link
Love these videos, currently in the process of restoring my own 1989 turbo. Great reference! I know your son will love the car when he gets home.
I'm glad you're enjoying them. Good luck with your 89!
What will happen to the series when he comes home? Will it continue?
Also just saw your comment about who'd watch some guy wrench on a car, it's me I'd watch an hour and a half long video full of technical explanations and other stuff thrown in as long as a Rotary is the center piece
That is a good question. I actually don't know. I plan to capture the reveal (assuming I can get it done in time!) and put together a video on that. We'll have to see what happens from there. At that point, anything that happens to the car will be based on what Bryson wants to do. So I suppose there might be more car content, but if so I expect Bryson to be the one doing it. I'll help if he wants me to. So, I guess we'll just have to wait and see what the future brings. Thanks for sticking around for it!
Do you have a box sub in the car or is your speaker system just the oem locations?
It has a sub. It's highlighted toward the end of this video: th-cam.com/video/qbUDgLY7_4U/w-d-xo.htmlsi=6mzCUiuWRDonc0JJ
Something special about a calm video of a dad just putting in work on his son’s car. Happy Father’s Day!
Thanks, man. Happy Father's Day to you too.
Won’t be long now!🙂
We're getting pretty excited over here!
That rear 3/4 view is absolutely gorgeous, love the wing on it
Thanks. I agree!
Thank you for sharing! I’m currently in the middle of my install. You mentioned the two wires going to the dc to dc charger from the voltage switch. I understand where the red wire goes. I’m assuming the black wire goes to the negative side? Thanks in advance
Good luck with your install. You don't need the black wire out of the voltage switch. The only reason you might use it is if you need to switch ground for something. You don't want to connect it to ground because that would defeat the switch.
@@some-guys-garage Thank you!
8 AWG wire from the alternator to the dc/dc charger? That's likely too small a wire & should be verified. Otherwise good video.
Thanks. It's funny. Renogy claims the 16 AWG wire in the standard connector is sufficient. I'm not convinced. For a long feed 6 AWG would be ideal. I've been using the 8 AWG for over a year now, and it's not been an issue.
Just found a coupe 302 for sale all original for 4k
Pounce on that one!
@someguyzgarage yeah is a great deal to bad no money but glad i saw your videos
Odd that Trick Flow's cam gear did not have you line up the crank gear dot with the cam gear dot. That is a new one. It looks to be 180egrees out. I see someone else commented, but to eye ball accross the gear like that, you way better than me. Keep it up. !
You're very perceptive. Truth told, I didn't assemble it that way. When I went back and filmed, it was sitting that way so I ran with it. :) Since it doesn't matter which way you do it, I left it that way.
I would definitely go Fastback
Hard not to...
Those guns on that slide hammer are no match for that dent😂
Kyle - welcome to the gun show...
Shit job on seats!
I have the same exact rocker panel dent situation on my car, I wonder how common it might be between these cars
Oh, really? I assumed that dent was a self-inflicted wound, likely caused by the car lift on one of the many times we lifted it up off the ground.
@@some-guys-garage yeah Im assuming thats what it is too, itd make sense my pinch welds are all smushed up on that spot too. Would love to redo all of it someday
people don't know thats not a jack point......there lies the problem. The jack point is 6 inches forward of that. Mine looks considerably worse.
