Diving the San Luciano Shipwreck, Manzanillo Mexico
Carlos my guide lost his life shortly after this dive. He will be missed. On August 6, 1965, she struck a submerged rock at Punta Hermanos, Tenacatita, about 38 miles / 61km from Manzanillo. The collision damaged her front and tore into her forward cargo holds. Flooding went back to the engine room’s bulkhead and held. The Captain, Romero Ortiz, flooded the rear ballast tanks to balance the vessel and continued to sail to Manzanillo. Anchored out on the Juluapan peninsula near Playa La Boquita in Santiago Bay, a diver descended on the wreck and determined the damage was too great for repair. She was sold to a scrap salvage operation in Guadalajara. To her credit, she was the oldest deep-water commercial steamship still active on the Pacific Coast, with a 73 year history that spanned two World Wars.

I'd never heard of this California wreck until my wife bought a 3 dive trip of the Olympic 2 for 21 January as a gift. Loving history as I do, of course I had to do a bit of reading. Photo is of the Olympic 2 after she was turned into a barge. She sits at 100 foot depth and is 256 foot long. Ricky’s 559 adventures I dove late October at it was 49-50 degrees. Drastic thermoclines of around 10 degree difference at depth. I recommend you take an Altitude Diving course as the elevation is 6400 foot and can be very dangerous if factors are not considered. What i mean is SCUBA diving at an altitude of 6400 ft to an Actual Depth of 75 ft. Your Theoretical Depth is 93 feet of water, use this depth when planning your dive. The depth of your safety stop should be at 12 ft of fresh water. Normal 15 foot safety stop is ok.

I know the visibility was poor however the original footage from the camera was a bit more clear. When I combined the cool stuff from 4 dives the quality went down. I was one of the last in the water which I’m guessing is why the shark swam by me. It acted as if I wasn’t there. You asked why go into their environment? I’m a combat vet, I found something that gives me a feeling of awe in a world i struggle to feel. I honestly don’t even think of that stuff when diving, I’m able to “be in another world” if that makes sense.

@@EMPTYARSENAL1 Little Creek...something tells me you have some frog blood in your veins... Yes, the water can be quite murky. Going back up to the surface is usually the most nervous moment for me for obvious reasons. I take my time and back out slowly. Gotta admit, I appreciate the adrenaline in that moment, reminds me I'm alive and possible prey.

We’d gotten split up about 20 minutes into the dive, later he told me he’d dropped over a ledge and visibility was poor even at 20 meters down so I couldn’t locate him. I continued dive found a lobster which were were hunting for and was on my way back to the boat. This place Telcott Shoals in California is notorious for Whites however I’d never seen one until that day.

Yes, North of Fresno. The highest altitude lake in that area.

Is permission required to dive in the lake? Any restricted areas? I've always been curious about the wall in the back of the lake near finegold creek...

Joshua, no problem diving there and no permits needed. Just no spear fishing though.
