Elephant (1989) which dealt with 'the troubles' in Northern Ireland and featured a series of shootings with no narrative and hardly any dialogue; all were based on accounts of actual sectarian killings that had taken place in Belfast. The film took its title from Bernard MacLaverty's description of the troubles as "the elephant in our living room" - a reference to the collective denial of the u...

Gatsby's father was actually played there by the actor who then had played Mr. Marley in Home Alone.

I'm so glad they added this scene. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think we ever have a part of the book where any of the characters directly meet Gatsby's father. This was a perfect inclusion to the funeral scene in the original, and it adds more shock value as only Mr. Gatz truly knew who Gatsby was, and also knew he didn't deserve what he got.

The end is haunting. The empty abandoned mansion with ghostly jazz music echoing through the halls. And the Buchanans just traipsing off on their travels again with their brattish child in tow and an army of servants. That is all too real because that is how the world is. The rich destroy stuff, and lives, trample on it p*ss off on holiday.

Small moment, but I like that in this version, Nick and Jordan parted as friends. That small smile between them makes me think, well, at least he's got a couple of good memories of that summer.

The novel itself is its own work and the multi-thematic complexity of writing and summation rarely translates well into film. The strength of 1974 movie ending is in how specific it shows just one theme - what monsters daisy and tom were. They were wealthy, they retreated into that wealth and people around them were simply collateral damage. Mia Farrow's daisy is pretty much the central character in this film and the ending demands that focus. In contrast, the 2013 adaptation steered much towards the strength of DiCaprio's portrayal of Gatsby and having the same ending would not have suited the adaptation. U need to appreciate the two for what they are. Personally..... i like the 1974 film better but that's because I love Mia Farrow How she played daisy was exactly how i imagined her reading the book. She is the strongest actor across both films by far.

3:26 Yes! The lack of expediency gave the movie realism but more importantly, as he alluded to, the mundanity of every moment sharply contrasts yet exists still, in the same world and thus, although graphic and jarring, it occurs not like an action movie, but as any other event transpires in reality....sort of mundane and indifferent.

4.30 I hate when Daisy kisses goodbye to Jordan because the way she does it is a clear evidence of the Buchanan's carelessness. It is such a vast carelessness that I don't find more than one Italian word to translate Nick's statement.

In Keith Richards biography he let his son Marlon write his own account of how he was living as a kid when his father was touring. Marlon Rivhards lived with Bert Richards his grandfather and a crazy Londoner, Keith's bodyguard and driver. They rented an huge crumbling Long Island mansion, dating from the Gatsby era. It was slowly falling down and the landlord did no maintenance. Marlon Richards with the three of them interacting in their weird way, it was Harold Pinter meets F Scott Fitzgerald. He wrote how he went out into the huge garden overlooking Long Island Sound where there was a derelict pool and broken down gazebo. He could hear jazz music and the clink of glasses as approached. When he got there the sounds stopped. Did he hear ghosts or was it just imagination ? Who knows ? Who cares? It is very evocative and reminds me of the final scene in The Great Gatsby 1974.

No offense to Fitzgerald but if I were him, I would have slightly altered the ending to make it more bittersweet and still get my point across about the emptiness of the culture of Vanity Fair. I would have Jordan Baker come to the funeral, stand by Nick and hold his hand to show that she does have a heart after all. Then the next day, when Nick is back at work, she slips a note under the door of his office. Dear Nick, I'm sorry for everything you've been through, these last few weeks and I'm deeply sorry about Gatsby. You were right. All our lives touch and actions have consequences. Tom and Daisy are careless people. They smash up objects, trample over creatures and retreat back into their vast careless or whatever it is that keeps them together, leaving the mess for others to clean. I didn't know it then, but I do now. I want you to know, I've fallen in love with you. You always speak the truth, even when it's difficult and I admire you for that. I want to be your wife and the mother of your children. I never realized just how much I cared, until yesterday. Next Thursday, I will be attending a golf tournament in Manhattan at 4:00. If I see you there, that will be a sign, you have accepted me. If not, then I will understand and quietly back out of the picture. I made some terrible mistakes and I'm learning to make amends for them. I hope to hear from you soon. Love Jordan P.S. I also took a driving class last week. I can't wait to show you what I've learned! Nick picks up the note, smiles and leaves the office and the book ends.

Did we deserve WWI? People like the Buchanans often survived the 30's better than most people. I don't think most people deserved the 1930s. Their toughness would break us in no time.

If Daisy were a virtuous woman, she would have stood up to Tom and filed for divorce. Then she would be free to allow Jay to court her with Nick as chaperone so they could pick up where they left off eight years ago and evaluate their personalities to decide whether they would be suitable for each other. Of course, if she has done it this way, there wouldn’t be a story.
