"At Meyvaert, we cherish our heritage!" 🧡
Especially when we get asked to present, preserve & protect one of Europe's most iconic and influential pieces of art: The Ghent Altarpiece (or the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb) by the brothers Jan & Hubert van Eyck.
The design of the 6 m high and 100 m3 in size robust climate chamber showcase was a lengthy multi-disciplinary process to find the right balance between the comfort of the visitors, the climate requirements, the heritage aspects, the religious context and the preconditions of the designers and builders of the showcase.
St. Bavo's Cathedral in Ghent, where the showcase is installed, is not heated, with winter temperatures dropping to 2 °C, and sunlight entering through the stained-glass windows, making it challenging to meet the climate requirements under non-museum conditions.
However, the high colour rendering of the lighting enhances the masterpiece's impact in its religious setting, and an innovative passive temperature and humidity buffering system ensures climate stability.
