This was caught whilst targeting Garrick, and even though I landed it, the fish was returned to the water. PLEASE RESPECT THE CLOSED SEASON FOR SHAD FROM 01 OCTOBER TO 30 NOVEMBER!!! This must have been a very hungry mullet to take a large stick-bait.....not the way I saw me christening my brand new Noeby A6 for Surf spinning rod, and my very awesome Noeby Infinite 8000 reel, along with a Noeby Heavy sinking stick-bait....but hey, I will take it.

Using an Okuma Matrix 10ft with ITX 4000, I was throwing a Rapala Crush City Impostor hoping to hook up with a nice Pommie when this GT picked me up instead. Sadly just towards the end of the video it turned on me and swam towards me very quickly and I couldn't keep enough tension on the line. Good move GT, you win. Hook simply came away. Good fun all the same.

When the shad start feeding on the mullet, spinning is fun at night. This was a difficult session as the Umgeni river was draining from the outgoing tide, lots of hyacinth and debris coming down as well as a very strong current. A nice 81cm (About 7kg) Shad taken off Blue Lagoon in Durban on a PASSION BAITS BIG STICKY XL in May 2024. It smashed the lure on the surface, and gave a massive run of about 50 meters before getting airborne. At first I thought it was a Garrick, was pleasantly surprised to see a shad.

Fishing a McCarthy Paddle tail 6inch in Hot Orange and a 2 Oz jighead at North Pier can be very successful for Kob. Make sure you cast it out deep and far, and work with 3 upwards sweeps, let it sink, and repeat.
