My TH-cam channel offers practical guidance to support nurses' education and career development, from new starters to senior nurses. I’m passionate about supporting nurses' career progression through education, as I've encountered many challenges during my own career. For example, I failed my nursing finals and had to go through several interviews before I was finally offered a team leader role. I’m sharing everything I’ve learnt over my 35 years as a Registered Nurse and 28 years as a Registered Nurse Tutor. I hope you find my videos useful. Look out for new video uploads on Sundays and let me know if you have any questions or topics you would like me to cover. I wish you every success in your future nursing career! 😊 🍀

This is so useful and well put together,Thank you, I'm currently in the UK, I'm doing my A levels, but I'm not an home student, I really want to be a child nurse, but I don't know if I am eligible to take them or even where to find level 6 degree apprenticeship. Any assistance or relevant information will be much appreciated.
I'm glad it helps and well done doing your A levels. You could apply for a full-time pre-registration Children's 3-year nursing degree or apprenticeship with an NHS Trust. It is best if you network with local apprenticeship leads at hospital trusts and they will tell you when apprenticeships will be advertised. Often they prefer you to work as a Children's HCA first before support an apprenticeship. Hope that helps.
@@carolforde-johnston Thank you for you response, i haven't been able to find nurse apprentice around me, I will put in more effort into research.
@tolulola Don't worry they usually are advertised twice a year so there may be some out Feb/March time ready for Sept but apprenticeship leads will let you know. Don't be afraid to contact them for advice.
Thank you ❤️

Hello! Thank you for this video! Where are the articles about the NHS and the KingsFund you referenced in this video?
If I am an experienced nurse with ITU skills in terms of transferable skills what points should I answer about
It depends on the type of research role but you will have transferable organisational and leadership skills working in ICU. Your practice is underpinned by current research, you will be used to recording data confidentially and maintaining informed consent. If you have any QI/ research project work you may draw from this too. I hope that helps.
Thanks for the video ❤ very very useful

Hi what if the article doesn't explicitly state a study design. Is this a limitation?
@ro12350 You can critique this yes, stating that the study design is not explicitly stated or clear, however... then state what is clearer e.g. X suggests that researchers used X type of methods or numerical data is presented which reflects a quantitative research approach (if this was the case)
@@carolforde-johnston Thank you so much, very helpful :)

@carolforde-johnston yes please
Thanks Carol.
My pleasure glad it helps in some way.
Thanks Carol, would you say a study to examine how one intervention compares to another in terms of patient outcomes is a quantitative study?
Usually they are quantitative but it depends on the patient outcomes, are the findings in numerical data? If so quantitative
@@carolforde-johnston yes mostly, am trying to figure out the best suited appraisal tool, so far I have ruled out the CASP tool, now learning more to JBI. Any further tips on this please?
@muk9463 JBI tools good
@muk9463 There's also the MMAT Mixed Methods Appraisal tool that may fit for your needs as it can used to appraise, qual, quantitative and/ mixed methods.
@@carolforde-johnston You are an amazing lecturer!
Abit confused, can CASP be used to appraise a quantitative study?
@muk9463 Depends on type of quantitive e.g. we have RCT CASP, see link: casp-uk.net/casp-tools-checklists/
Can I study ODP if I am dyslexic.
@Gigi-er1rp Yes definitely, talk to course leads, all Universities should have support for people with dyslexia and assessment marking takes account of dyslexia. When you apply you can ask questions about this.
Thank you and what? about the age.
September 2024, I did apply for nursing but I was withdrawn from the course because I have a criminal record on my DBS with which was 15 years ago, because of the DBS and they said the type of placement there do on nursing, so I am thinking to ODP now.
@Gigi-er1rp You'd need to check with Universities but think you can apply from 17yrs and 6 months usually.
Hi i am currently in uk.I am currently doing NVQ level 3 and I also have Msc in Business investment.can I become a Nurse?what should I need to do?
@anushkaweerakoon1803 You would need to apply to UK University for pre-registration nursing courses or apprenticeship route is where you work while doing your course. The criteria for application will be on the course details. Wishing you all the best on your career journey.
Thank you for your guidance
Hi Carol, I just wanted to let you know you have been one of the biggest help throughout my 3 years of training as a student nurse. Your valuable tips helped me pass my assignments and structure my personal statement. I have secured a job interview for a AMU (acute medical unit) post as a NQN and I have minimal information regarding on what to expect, do you have any good tips I could use for this post? I appreciate your videos very much and hope to continue my professional development with your help.
Thank you for your lovely feedback, I'm glad they help and I wish you all the best in your interview. Most of the tips and potential questions are in this video but think about Acute Medical Assessment unit and the types of care/pts. If you can do a informal visit it would be good if you have not been on placement. Revise your A-E assessment as you assess, treat, and investigate patients with acute medical conditions. Also maybe basic ECG rhythms and basic applied physiology e.g. renal system and CNS. You may have to describe what you would do if a patient deteriorated e.g. their Glasgow Coma scale score decreased. You may not have any of these questions but worth revisiting escalation policies and then broader areas such as patient confidentiality, consent and patients who refuse care/ mental capacity assessment. I hope that helps.
Thank you I appreciate the help!

Thank you Carol for this. I have taken all you points to heart and for both times I applied for a band7 nurse educator role, (one was a fixed term and now a permanent one) I was offered the post. What is better apprenticeship or the traditional route of uni ?
I am currently completing my level 3 health and social care, and need to decide which to route suits me best the goal is the same to become a registered nurse.
It depends on the individual and your specific needs. The traditional route is quicker but you have to pay. Apprenticeship route you're paid a wage and all Uni fees paid but takes longer. Also, apprenticeships are not offered everywhere and usually only advertised at certain times of the year. They often ask for support worker or healthcare experiences too as part of apprenticeship application. Unis and NHS Trusts often offer open days or recruitment events and they have apprenticeship leads or pre-reg course leads you can talk to too. I hope that helps. 🍀
P.S. They both offer level 6 nursing degree to become as registered nurse but it depends which route suits your needs better.
@shamsaahmed8581 If you're doing H&SC course at college and have had placements in healthcare you could apply for either route, depending on whether they are both available where you live. Currently many NHS Trusts are trying to save money and it looks like there are not as many apprenticeships around. If you contact your local apprenticeship leads they are usually very helpful.
This was super helpful. I really struggle with synthesising and comparing and contrasting
Thank you for the feedback, I'm glad it helped.
Another excellent and informative video. Thanks Carol very helpful 😊

So I can use SPIDER to rephrase my research question and inclusion and exclusion criteria? If I am doing qualitative analysis study can I also include quantitative study in my data charting?
Yes you can use SPIDER or PICOT to revise, confirm or formulate your research question and in turn your inclusion/ exclusion criteria.
I can't answer your second question as there is not enough detail, whether this is a primary study or lit review, you'd need to check with your tutor regarding assignment guidelines as I don't advise on assignments.
@@carolforde-johnston they will be primary data
@koketsomatlakala869 If your research question requires both qual and quant data and you can justify it, but depends on your research question. A mixed methods study for example. Best to review with your tutor to be sure.
