I sang Sibelius' Finlandia Hymn in iconic Finnish landscapes
Even in times of turmoil, let there be space for reflection, inner peace, and a connection to nature; for only via these can we ultimately manifest peace in the world.
---
Jean Sibelius composed Finlandia in 1899, during a period of increasing political pressure and censorship from Imperial Russia. Most of the piece is taken up with rousing and turbulent music, evoking the national struggle of the Finnish people. Towards the end, a calm comes over the orchestra, and the serene and melodic Finlandia Hymn is heard.
Sibelius originally wrote Finlandia as part of a patriotic suite performed during the Press Celebrations of 1899, an event symbolizing resistance to censorship. The piece, with its soaring melodies and the powerful hymn section, became a symbol of hope, unity, and resilience for the Finnish people. Sibelius later reworked the Finlandia Hymn into a stand-alone piece. This hymn, with words written in 1941 by Veikko Antero Koskenniemi, is one of the most important national songs of Finland. It has been repeatedly suggested to be the official national anthem of Finland.
For me personally Sibelius' Finlandia stands as a monumental inspiration throughout my entire life. I've always wanted to record it properly in my own style, but only recently I felt like I now have the skills to do so. I've been doing intensive vocal training for over a year, and much of the motivation to continue with that, day after day, came from then hopefully being able to render this specific piece like I've always heard it in my mind. Producing this video included a lot of hours in my home studio, and also many memorable moments in breathtakingly beautiful Finnish landscapes during the summer of 2024.
I really hope you enjoy this music video! Thank you for listening.

In this video I have a conversation with my dad about the inherent loneliness of the world, the complex greyness of it, finding meaning in life, and what brings inner lighness to one's life. A new type of video for me, but this was definitely a good experiment! I'm now thinking I should continue making these types of conversation videos with many other amazing people I know :)

    English lyrics (AI-translated, AFAIK there's no official translation): verse1: People are like ants on their endless trails From afar, they all appear the same, So that they cannot be told apart If one could peek into the depths of the soul No two would be alike Those who see only beauty and not what's true, Will miss out on friendships rare and few. chorus: Everyone is worth a song Every life is important We each have but a fleeting moment, The one that fate has assigned to us. verse2: If you've found a good friend, Treat them like a miser hiding a treasure Never does he trade his most precious thing He polishes away all stains from his silver So warm your dearest friend with love For a great treasure has come your way. Too late to light a candle for them Once the grave mound has been closed chorus: Everyone is worth a song Every life is important We each have but a fleeting moment, The one that fate has assigned to us. Everyone is worth a song Every life is important We each have but a fleeting moment, The one that fate has assigned to us.

    This ballad is originally made for Finland's first entry to Eurovision, in 1961. Lyrics in English (AI-translated, since there's no official translation): Beneath the cloak of night, the land is left It's time to turn off the lights Only the shadows stand serious now, starting to dream A light remains in a small window Who stays awake with their thoughts? Longing for their own friend, they sing this way - hoping: The path of light rays takes me to memories The lantern is eternal, the memory unfading Through the silent night, beyond the starry belt The song plays for them, if they can hear Now a beautiful new star is shining Even the singer notices its glow Their beloved has placed a light in the window Listening for me as they long The light stays under the approaching dawn The singer has fallen asleep They rush to their friend, with wings of dreams The path of light rays takes me to memories The lantern is eternal, the memory unfading Through the silent night, beyond the starry belt The song plays for them, if they can hear

    Thank you both for sharing this conversation. These were some of the wisest words I have ever heard, I literally got tears in my eyes. Especially since it was in Finnish, I think these kind of topics are still not being talked about nearly as much as they should in Finland. Lately I have paid more attention to my own thoughts, mostly due to some small burnout and anxiety challenges. But that increased awareness combined with overall growth has led to everything feeling more grey and colorless, although not necessarily dark. It seems that as a child the windows are very open and mind is more sensitive to all the glimpses of light coming from other people. Now as a student it seems I need to pay attention to keeping the windows clean, not only to see the colors but also to show my own colors to people around me, which in turn can help them connect better and to together create meaningful thoughts and experiences. This was a surprising journey beginning with a DIY hand truck and homemade charcoal, leading to genetic ML, suffering with Adele and finally here. You seem to be a very thoughtful and kind family, wish you all the best and success for these channels!

    • @SongsForHumanity
      @SongsForHumanity 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much for the thoughtful comment! It was heartwarming to hear that this conversation resonated with you so much. Yeah, little children have that natural tendency to exist purely in the moment, without much thinking at all. That's why they're so immersed and happy most of the time (if they get to live in a healthy household). As adults we learn to think, but we are not taught how to not think. That causes a lot of greyness :/ But you're definitely on the right track with the increased awareness! The greyness can be just a necessary step on the way to a more content and fullfilling life. I hope you the best on your journey <3

    Thanks for sharing this. I got intrigued by your unique approach to disc golf self awareness/improvement and liked your ancillary philosophies. Checked out your cello song (nice!) and when I saw this conversation with your dad, I saved it for a good time. Today, Sunday, was that. I used to enjoy getting up early and listening to NPR (National Public Radio) program called “On Being” as it gave the day, and me, a bit of spiritual reflection and momentum. They stopped broadcasting recently and I feel the loss, though through my habit and desire realize I have the wherewithal and inner functioning to continue my Sunday ritual. At 67, I related to your dad’s conscious time spent on this earth, and also the great rapport and connection with you, his son. My son is 37 and we have a wonderfully candid and meaningful relationship. The exchange with your dad resonated with me as he pondered and made sense of the blend of his personal Universe with that of the Cosmos that includes others’ perspective and awareness. When people have conversations like this I believe it fuels the evolution of our species and gives hope to mankind’s potential to transcend these difficult times (just read the world news, ha!) and I appreciate that you envisioned, filmed, edited and shared this. I was jotting notes in my journal while watching, and was having some problems with the negativism associated with the term “loneliness” and so translated in my own mind to “aloneness” which I embrace and noted that at one point you used that phrase too. Just rewatched (for perhaps the 20th time!) the movie “Contact” so have been thinking about existentialism and struggles and celebrations regarding our place in the vastness of Space and Time. Don’t want to go on and on on your channel, just want you to know that this U.S. guy (and disc golfer!) heard yours and your dad’s message loud and clear with good seeds planted for further ponderings.

      Thanks for the insightful comment, Tom! Great to hear that this video has sparked some ponderings over there in the US :) I spent a long time translating and subtitling everything, but I felt that it was important to "store" some of my dad's wonderful life philosophy for the entire world like this. I also think these kinds of conversations are really important for humanity! In Finnish we have a term "maailmanparannuskeskustelu" which directly translates to "world improvement conversation", and it's exactly these types of discussions that it refers to :)

    its great to see that someone that lived in a time and place so distant from mine have so many thoughts a like, when I think about reality and the meaning I always go back to what makes me think about it, most of the time I tend to go to a place of how society and the people that a look up to are talking about more openly about mental health and the real struggles of a human being no matter your circustances, being 24 I'm accustomed to hear about mental health since I was 14 and I always tought that this made me think about reality and lonliness at a younger age than the people that 10 years ago, when they were 24 to 34, they were talking about mental health and insecurites. My point is that now some people in their 40s are talking about insecurites but, me being at 24, I like to think that I dont think about insecurities that much and focus on this feelings about reality and like your dad said the indvidual realities and being alone sharing the common reality, the tought that you are always alone cause you only have your reality and your perspective is the only thing that really matters to your on reality, in the end we can try to communicate but we only see glimpsies of other people realities. going back to my original point, It's crazy to see that a 66 year old have the same feelings about those thougts even if the society wasnt so open about talking about those things when he was 14, its just to show that being a human its an expireince where all beings have the same tools, and the grand scheme of reality its equal to all of us even if our own realities itselves are not the same. great video, cheers from Brasil!
