im excited to see your videos in the future I want to get into picture book illustration so its so interesting to hear others stories and how to get into it :)
Aww that’s great! I hope my videos will be helpful to you, then! 😊
Mine is a red book is there a different version?
I think they’re just different editions, I saw someone else with like a beige cover for the same book, too 😊
Great video! What pencil were you drawing with? And what were those tiny rounds of paint were you using? Are those watercolor?
Oh, I love this pencil! It's a 4B technical pencil from Artix. I'm going to have to get a new one now that you mention it! 🫣 And those tins are watercolours
Oh ok. Did you fill those tins yourself? Or do they sell them that way?
They sell them like that, they’re from Arrtx I think 🤔
yay! so glad to see a vlog from you! Is this a new studio space? Or your home office?
Stayed at home 🫣 feeling quite lazy lately to go to the studio hahaha! I’ll make the next vlog longer, I’ve already got some cool zine ideas to try out! 😉
Such a lovely and relaxing vlog!! Absolutely loved watching it and seeing how a day of yours is like 😊So excited to see the zine and the shift towards board books.
Thanks Ellie! I'll make sure to keep you in the loop 😉💕
When I was 7, my teacher told me that my drawing was ugly, that I didn't know how to draw and that I never would. I believed her for 40 years. In 2022 I decided to check, and now I draw everyday. Some people should not be teachers as far as they aren't good pedagogues.
Oh noooo 😢 that’s a heartbreaking story… I’m glad that you decided to give it another go and saw that it wasn’t true! 💜
@@MartaTaylor Thank you Marta, that was one of the best decision of my life 💜
8:00 - Is exquisite.
I’m glad you enjoyed the sketchbook tours! 🥰
6:14 Is beautiful.
3:33 Fantastic!
I love 9:30 - Good Job.
I like your bold use in colours. and it's interesting to hear your perspective. Hope you can continue to create in the New year!
I hope you’re feeling happy to create more now as well! Hopefully this new year will do us good! 😊
Love love this video! I feel so much for you and your experience with art teachers. It’s such a shame they shot down your creativity like that!! I don’t think there are wrong colours. You see the world differently than others, in your own unique way and that for me is beautiful. Would be fun to see an illustration from you only using “wrong” colours that you’ve been avoiding 😁😁🫶
Yes!!! I have a few already (since I’m doing my portfolio hehe). I’ll show you next time we meet up! 😊
Wow, Marta, such an interesting video. Loved your collages and drawings! Personally I think your use of colours and your style are beautiful. I think you are definitely showing the world that you have your own style! x Nell
Thanks, Nell! I do like the colour pallets I’ve been using, but at the same time I feel like I’ve been playing it safe… it’s actually fun to get out of my comfort zone! 😉 hope you have a great start to the new year!
Where do you start or how do picture book
I do some brainstorming to get ideas for stories, note them all down on a paper… and then choose the one that seems most original! 😊
I love it, I adore the candidness and also I just feel so happy looking at it. The colours are so bright and lovely. The concept of drawing ugly things on purpose takes off so much pressure and fills me up with joy and liberation. I am feeling so inspired and I am so grateful that you shared this with us. Thank you, really🎀
The thing I love most about sharing on TH-cam is when someone tells me I’ve inspired them, even if it’s to doodle for a bit 😊💜 thank you!!
Maybe… it’s your self talk? Maybe work on how you talk about your work? You are amazing and you don’t have to create masterpieces every time.
Thats true! 😊
I really enjoyed this video, as it was so refreshingly honest. I admire how you are still working/playing/experimenting in your sketchbook despite going through the difficulties of art block. Keep going - through this experience you are still learning!
Thank you!! Art block is quite strong this time, but I'm determined to not let it defeat me 🥺 maybe I'll take a small break while Christmas is on... ;)
Sometimes in life we come to a crossroads, and maybe that's where you are. Maybe it's time to just draw and paint, without thought to 'will it work in my next childrens book?' Your illustrations are sweet, perfect for children, and they all come from your imagination. I saw you'd done some pleine aire, maybe that's your way to find your next creative path, an opening to 'new'. Sketching what you See before you, rather than stretching your imagination. Maybe your imagination needs a rest. Change is always a good thing, tho it can be frightening. I look forward to seeing what comes next. Maggie x🌷UK
You're right, thanks for your kind advice, Maggie! ☺ maybe I'll go to a cafe one of these days and maybe sketch the people I see (I love people watching)
@MartaTaylor that's an excellent idea! People watching is an artwork in itself! 🤭 and I'd love to see your rendition of cafe & people Mx
Having a sketchbook full of "bad" artworks is actually normal as an artist. As artist, I think we often forget that striving for perfection sometimes might lead us to unhealthy habits of comparing our artworks on our previous masterpiece or feeling as though nothing that has been done is enough to called "good art". Your art is just dying to be born and sometimes you just have to let it be. Let it be bad, messy and imperfect. Secondly, it's important that we remember that our art is not a reflection of our goodness as an artist or our ability to create a masterpiece.
This is a beautiful reminder, thank you so much ☺️ I think it was just what I needed to hear and agree with you 100%!
Change the way you look at things, and the things you look at change! Embrace your art block! We can’t be productive all year long, we need rest, don’t force yourself or you will hate doing art. Accept it, do something that is easy, like coloring, or crafting or anything that will take the pressure off, sometimes taking one step back will take you two steps forward, even a tree doesn’t bare fruit all year long, so let go of the leaves, you will get new better ones. That said, I did enjoy your tour, and if you hadn’t said you had a block I would have never guessed!
Thank you for your advice, Avigail. I think you're so right, too... Maybe taking a step back and actually allowing myself to rest and put my mind onto something else might work. Christmas is coming soon, so I might just rest while I'm visiting my family, not even take the sketchbook with me... 🫣
@@MartaTaylor I would take the sketchbook... 😀 everything will be good! ❤
Soooooo excited for a new sketchbook tour from you, Marta!!!!! 😊
Aww you make me happy! 😊 thank you!
🦭
I do like it 👍
Thank you! ☺️
Keep playing, without expectations. That is all that helps me. Draw like a kid and laugh ❤
So true… thank you for the kind advice ☺️💛
I love your sketchbook! You said how much you enjoyed the collage, maybe that’s the key for you right now, exploring collage more and being kind to yourself and output. Be like a kid again and just create until it shifts
That’s true! When we were a kid we never cared about the result, it was more about having fun and getting messy 😊 and being kind to yourself is so important… (and hard 🫣)
Try to mix colours you like in a page and create your own unique color palette, draw with left hand, draw with toothbrush, draw with rugs, draw with your eyes closed, draw listening to music and dance with your tools on paper, chase an object in your paper, draw with both hands, don't draw , dance, cook, listen to music, read poetry, comtemplate de sunrise or sunset
This sounds so nice… I feel like you love playing and having fun in your sketchbook 😊 I will definitely try several of these out, I haven’t used a toothbrush to paint in so many years… thank you so much for your lovely advice 💕
Love your sketchbook ❤❤❤bravissima
Thank you! 🥰
@MartaTaylor 🥰
The sketchbook is so cool even if it was drawn during art block. To others they all look wonderful, perhaps its what being an artist is, looking down on your own art when it's not that bad. I am also not satisfied in most of my work. But still, I just keep on drawing.
You're right with that... we are our worst critiques 😭 just keep drawing is the only thing we can do with art block...
Thank you so much for sharing!! It's vulnerable to share when we are having a bad case of art block. There are some absolutely gorgeous spreads in this sketchbook! So so beautiful. We can be our worst critics, but i think you should be proud of all the work you've put to keep being creative despite having an art block. My advice would be to stick with styles that you loved and had fun making. Like the full spreads, full of black/ orange color. The collages, the bold lineart. And if the basics that used to keep you creative are not working for you anymore to avoid them until you feel creative again ❤️ Hope this block ends soon! I know how awful it can be
Thanks Elly 😭💚 I know we've been both a bit blocked since September. Maybe I should stay away from basics as you say and do a painting like you did! Something completely different...
@@MartaTaylor Yess, do it do it 🙌
Hi Marta! Nice sketchbook tour. A tip against art block: watch (and draw along) a session of limited time drawings. Someone else has chosen the reference pictures and the limited time take the pressure off because you already know that you won't do a masterpiece in 2, 5 or 8 minutes. Bonus: it may gives you ideas for future projects. I don't say that because there are free limited time live drawing sessions on my channel, you can find some elsewhere of course. I really love your ugly horses.
Aww that's a really good idea! You're right that with the limited time, it does take the pressure off as well. I'll give it a go once I start my new sketchbook! Thanks for the suggestion 😊
@@MartaTaylor You are welcome, I am happy to help ☺
So much fun! Love this! x Nell.
Absolutely fantastic Marta! Thank you x Nell.
Thank you, Nell! 😊
Hi Marta i love the ilustration for your book is simple but absolutely colorful it's awesome because the most important is the recipe right!
Thank you! I really hope the end result looks amazing! 😊
@MartaTaylor hi! Absolutely yes!!
May I know why this is a re-upload?😅❤
Yeah, I wanted to edit something and it hadn’t had many views yet so I took the chance 😉👏
Sooooooo inspiring!!!! Thank you!!
I’m really glad you found it inspiring! Going through and art block so I might to well to remind myself of this again, too 🫣
Great flip! Love your work!
Thank you!
There's a book called The Education of Littletree that I really loved. Did you read The Screwtape letters?
I haven't read either!! (me noting them down in my planner hahahah)
@ for some reason I'm surprised you haven't read the Screwtape Letters. Its a clever book that you have to reframe your viewpoint constantly. It is written by C.S.Lewis, who is a personal hero.
Again, love this!
Thank you!!
looooove it!
It looks very much Like Emily Powells Style that I very love. ❤
Oh, I love how she paints! Especially her use of colour! 😊
Working on a picture book dummy of my own right now and this really helped me visualize the process! Thank you! :D
Aww I’m super happy I could help!! 😊 Happy creating!
recommend "kitchen" by banana yoshimoto... has a vibe i cant put into words
@@clara3681 the fact that you can’t put it to words has me intrigued 😂 I’ll ask the bookshop to order it for me!
Highly recommend Warbreaker and the Mistborn Trilogy by Brandon Sanderson. Great reads 😁Love your videos, I’ve been wanting to take my illustration work professionally and it can be so scary! Thanks for putting your work out there and giving us advice.
@@LandAmongtheStars4904 I’m glad I can help in any way! 😊 I’ve never read a Brandon Sanderson book, and I know he’s a popular author… Maybe I’ll start with this one you’re recommending me 😉👍
This was lovely to watch❤❤ Great work
