Van Halen Brown Sound - Kemper Top Jimi Profile

Ended up trading my Mark V for a Kemper. Only just scratching the surface, but it absolutely nails the brown sound. Apologies for the sloppy playing
Mesa Mark V - 12AX7 vs. 12AT7 V4 Test
มุมมอง 1.2K5 ปีที่แล้ว
Tried popping a mesa 12AT7 into the V4 slot to smooth out the highs - didn't seem to do much. I actually think the 12AX7 sounded smoother. May spring for a JAN-Phillips 12AT7 in the future as that's the recommended smoother-outer

This is what I was looking for ! Thank you for taking the time 👍
Thanks dude. Has anyone dialed in a good Hendrix tone?
I think for me, I just discovered that when you get the channel controls adjusted, I have it to where the gain structure/timbre sounds the smoothest and “feels” best, but the EQ levels aren’t necessarily to my taste. Then, use the sliders to get the EQ in check. The interaction between the channel controls and sliders is so touchy, moving a knob 1mm in the wrong direction or a slider 1mm too high or low makes all the difference. The Mark V is a bear to dial, but once you get it, it’s amazing. That’s my experience anyways.
100% agree, very sensitive controls, but that's also why it can do so many things well. Huge range of possible tones.
Sooooo Good! Great Job!
Thanks! It really is an extremely versatile amp that can nail many, many tones and sounds great doing so. Definitely miss it.
BAD ASS!
HOLY SMOKES!! AWESOME!
any pedals?
Just a TS-9 tube screamer in front of the amp
@@guitar-man-man-man Nuts. Hard to imagine needing anything to push in front of that Mark I mode.
the bottom is fat and fck tight
Did the Jan 12at7 or any other combination end up making a difference? Both sound the exact same on this clip.
I only tried the Mesa 12at7 and it's such a small difference in the room that it doesn't show up much at all in the clips.
I noticed little to no difference, especially with a band.
Nice tone! Thanx 4 sharing! Is it possible to set the Mark V 90 HD running 6L6 in variac power? Thanx. I can't find in the manual this except for the EL34 rule to set the amp ALWAYS in variac power until you get back to 6L6...
Thanks Miguel! Yes, the global power switch has 2 settings which can be used with 6L6 - full power or variac power. I actually have it set to variac power in this video. You can see it on the far right side of the amp.
@@guitar-man-man-man excellent! Thanks for your kind reply! I'll try it right away, I'm a big fan of the losen feel tube amp tone, specially for classic/psychadellic stuff... cheers!
Great job Back of map settings ? Pentode etc? Also are you using sliders eq or dial scoop. It’s hard to see on video.
Slider EQ and it's in 90w mark I setting, so none of the back of the amp settings affect it
@@guitar-man-man-man thanks will try my mark v with the 2x12 oversized cab. Not sure what speakers are in them but will give it a go :)
Thanks for this test, did you try it in V6 or both V4 and V6? I just ordered 2 Jan-Phillips 12AT7s just to see what all the fuss was about. It seems like a small change here.
What was the verdict? I was thinking about trying this in my Mark 5:35 after all the hoopla about the mod, but some say (and this clip seems to show) that it doesn't make much of a difference.
I used these same settings with my MK V 35 using the Crunch channel. Sounds great too. Nice job.
I bet this sounds dead on if you use greenbacks.
I've heard with el34s and a Marshall cab you can get much closer, but this gets close enough to scratch the itch for me. Maybe I'll try the el34s some day
@@guitar-man-man-man Yeah man. I'm going to try these settings. i like that you used Mark I mode and tried to add back in the mids and highs. That is an underappreciated mode on this amp. The crunch is a little thin for me but Mark I mode is awesome, even though you have to fight with it a little.
@@bdubbstsi Agreed. Without the mid boost feature of the smaller 25 and 35, the crunch mode just seems to lack balls. But then I haven't bothered to try it at higher volumes, so maybe that would help.
@@guitar-man-man-man Give it a try with the Tube Screamer to beef it up.
How would.you say the tone varies between this and the 35 head?
I haven't done a full comparison yet, but they're pretty similar. A couple more ways to tweak the feel on the 90w, but they can achieve many of the same tones with a little effort. The biggest difference in my mind is the lack of mid boost on the 90w. That really helps the 25 and 35 watt versions achieve some nice mid-pushed mid and high gain tones. I might do a comparison video in the next week or so.
Using the crunch channel here? Sounds good!
Thanks man! Yeah, the crunch channel alone is honestly worth the price of admission on these amps. The settings in the snapshot are the ones used
@@guitar-man-man-man I brought the 35 head about 2 months ago. It's a great amp. Very tweakable with the added eq. Class of its own. Yeah, that crunch channel is pretty good, no doubt about it.
