Community Cribs
Tours of the homes of my two Beninese neighbors, Francois and Aurelie. Benin is known as an underdeveloped country throughout the world, however, there is a misconception of how rural families and individuals live in small West African countries. In my small village of 1000 people, there is a range of living styles. Most community members live in homes similar to that of Francois, but there are a handful of people in my community who live like Aurelie. While I cannot speak on behalf of all living situations in Benin (the same way I cannot speak on behalf of all living situations in the USA), I can show what I have experienced within my own neighborhood.

Baking Brownies in a "Dutch Oven"
มุมมอง 3264 ปีที่แล้ว
No oven or fridge? No problem! As someone who loves baking, living in a rural village in Benin (West Africa) without an oven or fridge has not been easy. But I managed to overcome a lot through the mysterious art of Dutch Oven baking. My brownies in this video weren't perfect, but definitely delicious. You can find my tweaked recipe below.
Peace Corps Cribs - Benin Edition

Home tours of 4 Peace Corps volunteers serving in Benin (West Africa). Names and sites omitted for security purposes. Housing situations can range widely between Peace Corps countries as well as within countries. For Benin, volunteer homes vary in sizes, access to electricity, access to water, access to roads and access to cell reception (amongst other things). Some volunteers live in cities wi...
Vlog #1 - Sunday as a Peace Corps trainee
มุมมอง 6335 ปีที่แล้ว
Life in Benin (West Africa) is different from life in other parts of the world in many ways. While one video can not capture all of my experiences as a Peace Corps trainee so far, I hope this video can give some idea of the day to day activities and cultural experiences in Benin.
Peace Corps Benin - Sustainable Agriculture Systems
มุมมอง 1K5 ปีที่แล้ว
Peace Corps promotes many different practices in its Sustainable Agriculture Systems (SAS) program in Benin (West Africa). Here we can see Peace Corps SAS trainees teaching two sustainable gardening techniques to a group of aspiring entrepreneurs. The techniques taught in this video address Peace Corp's goals to increase food security, nutritional intake and household income in Benin.

Not sure, it was a 40 minute zem ride through terre rouge and that's all I remember. Maybe it was North!

What is you internet situation like? Did you all bring laptops?

Hi, good question! Each of us had different situations in terms of connectivity. Wifi is not widely available in Benin and most people rely on their mobile data. My site had very good connection so I was able to stream netflix, but this was not most people's experience. I knew others who could only send a text if they stood in the top corner of their bathroom. I would say that on average, most people could send messages and use social media, but streaming and video calls were challenging. We all brought laptops and shared movies and tv shows on hard drives.

Claudia, this is great! I really enjoyed seeing the daily life (and especially my granddaughter Aubrey). I would love to see more videos (even if Aubrey isn't in them). I'm so happy all of you are having these experiences, and I wish you well.
