Plein air painting in El Salvador SD 480p
On our trip, we traveled throughout the western half of El Salvador and I painted and drew all the way through. We started in Ahuachapan then travelled to Ataco, Juayua, Santa Ana, and ended in San Salvador. In most of the places we stayed, we took day trips to various sites. I painted 9 paintings in oil paint.

    Perspective can make or break a drawing, especially if one is drawing buildings or similar linear items. I have found too many people who cannot grasp perspective and how to put it to paper yet draw anyway and then complain their work does not look like they wanted it to look. It takes practice and learning how to trust one’s eyesight. One other item I noted in this video is the fact you will ‘pre-apply’ colors to your paper before even visiting the site to be sketched. I have not tried that before and I think I may just give it a whirl. We have street gatherings where people sell their crafts and art. That would be a pretty good place to this this technique. Thanks for the idea.

    I enjoyed listening and watching your presentation. Your Engineer’s Bag is a bit much to carry for me and where I tend to go, but I must admit I do have a large backpack for the times I will be away from the house for awhile. My bag holds three water brushes, two books, one for sketching with pencil, pen and ink, and the other for water coloring. I have a small set of sketching pens with waterproof ink. For colors I have a small palette of Cotman watercolors and a tin of watercolor pencils. Add some erasers, paper towels, a ruler and a small water bottle and I am good to go. I do have the old fashion set of pen staffs and nibs (probably 50+ years old) that I will use on occasion. I will subscribe to your videos. One extra reason for doing so is because I miss Calgary and will be looking forward to familiar places up there. For over 20 years my family had an office/apartment in the London House across from Caesar’s Steak House. We drilled for oil and gas around Acadia Valley Sibbald and Medicine Hat. We loved Calgary and all the people we met and worked with. Great place. I miss it. Cannot wait to visit again, meet old friends, and see the sights. Hopefully, your sketches will show some of the beauty of Alberta.

    • @markvazquezmackay
      @markvazquezmackay 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, I use any ink. The ink you buy for asian writing will be more diluted with water while acrylic ink is thick and moves slowly. A good medium would be an Indian Ink; Bombay is a good brand. Have fun!

    Very interesting and informative not sure I feel confident enough to do with pen and ink ,, taking classes on line with ed cooper and michelle webber ,anne kerr they suggested same as you become proficient with drawing and you'll be able to get your ideas down more fluid also like the idea of ink nibs as michele webber just did a Japanese style drawing and I find the techniques used to be very beautiful when you used the ink and water I can see how that could turn into a interesting drawing...I'm not there yet that mostly likely far very far into my use of that median I'm just trying to put in practice my basic skills that my other art teachers have taught me and I see how the use of copic markers could add to a building depth and design. I need more practice with tones and shading how to how median a certain way to achieve that depth look, I'm finding great helpful informative from so many artists to build upon other information I've have been taught so thank you for sharing your knowledge....if you could do a video if you have time to do a slow video with shading and tonal patterns with pencils or pens i think that would be interesting i know basic techniques for beginners to build upon are really good even how to draw a car or truck in urban setting to scale along a bldg such things like that step by step or a person on a bike step by step many beginners like me need to watch the teachers hand movements to mimic the gesture to make it work on our paper.....some artist move so fast and they are so proficient at their art I think they've forgotten how it feels like to learn the basics,,,which manyvofvus want and need to learn....art basic 101...lol.... many blessings to you and your art....

    I wanted to point out that simple "houseware" images can go with a cockroach. They can be in your house, your food. Then it can become political since cockroaches and poverty go hand in hand...

    Thanks for the help, AWESOME! I have been thinking about adhesives as I transition from collages in my journals to work I want to sell. Mostly I have been experimenting with making my own collage papers.

  • @linameeswanson8897
    @linameeswanson8897 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you for sharing your collage techniques, especially helpful to learn about the tracing paper, different adhesives and various mediums you used. My question to is...are collages supposed to tell a story? Or have narrative, as you mentioned? Some collages I've seen from other artists don't seem to make sense. Are they supposed to make sense or just be a good composition?

    • @markvazquezmackay
      @markvazquezmackay 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think they need to have a narrative. I do however think it helps the artist figure out what to put down...if it communicates, maybe not important.

    Let me start off by saying how much I admire your process and your art and how grateful I am that you choose to so generously share that with us who are just at the beginning stages of learning! Thank you! Regarding the comment about collage being very easy to do poorly. When I heard that I thought, "yeah! That is so true!" and as I went about my day I realized that thinking this way (and I understand why you said this, it's to help us become aware and be better able to judge "good vs poor" art) gets me stuck. I have learned that I need to do a LOT of poor/shitty art and not be precious about it, attached to it in order to improve as an artist. Because if I focus only on making that perfect piece I will produce less, fail less, yes, but also produce less. Thank you again for sharing what you are and what you do :)!

    Do you ever just go completely abstract with your piece after you activate it? Do you just continue on with collage with representational drawing towards the end?

    • @markvazquezmackay
      @markvazquezmackay 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always go representational...just how I like to finish. I do however judge the success of the collage, on its ability to end as abstract or representational.
