Pre Ian Sanibel Bike Ride #sanibel #sanibelisland @therealfloridalife @OurRetiredLife #florida
Filmed by Tim Gebauer on an iPhone 7, (yes 7 that's why the video quality is what it is) the camera was attached to a rented bike. When I filmed this it was for myself. When I ran across it I had to publish it for fellow Sanibel Lovers who might enjoy a little blast from the past.
So much has changed, yet Sanibel still calls.
Enjoy.

Winning the Thrift Store Treasure Hunt in Board Games
Tim - excellent video and quite informative. Like you, I enjoy genealogy and researching the life and times of my ancestors. With 19 children, your Patriot ancestor is likely a known Patriot to the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) and I welcome you to consider joining, as I have done for my patriot ancestor. If you would like to know more, let me know.
Thanks for the note. He isn't my only Patriot ancestor. It's something I have considered, if I decide to move forward I'll reach out. Interestingly his great grandfather came to America as a British soldier in the late 1600s and settled here.
Fascinating stuff . Reminds me of Daniel Boone bio almost. Some shared commonalities there, the salt lick livelihood and the passion for the hunt. Maybe even the Cumberland gap trek though im not entirely sure bout that last one.
@@1697511981012332 thanks for the nice comment. There is another ancestor that intersected with Daniel Boone. Maybe a future post. Sadly no blood relation.
What is his name? There is a Revolutionary war guy buried in Trimble county in the same cemetery as a Civil War soldier.
Gentry, he died in 1843. Our family history indicates he was buried in what was then the Gentry family cemetery. I'd love to find his grave.
Currently helping a friend build a deck we have purchased all the members from the same store and there are variations in width and thickness
It's unavoidable. The best thing is to sort them by size to minimize high and low spots, especially on the joists. Good luck!
Good job! Block isn't the easiest thing to work with. I don't understand why you couldn't use ledger flashing though. I am re-doing my deck. Whoever build it, drove nails about an inch from the top of the ledger, into the sill plate. That's all that was attaching it. He also left out the flashing, which was the kiss of death in my case, because it rotted out both the sill plate and the rim joist. In my re-do, I am elevating the deck and will be attaching the ledger to the rim joist. I just finished replacing the rim joist and sill and am jack hammering a negative slope concrete pad that was under it. I just love the previous owner..
I’m not sure on the flashing either but spacing like I did is local code to attach to concrete block so I went with it. I had a situation similar to yours on my last house with missing flashing. I discovered it when replacing the sliding glass door and found the wood holding it up was rotted. Sigh. It sounds like you will have a great deck when you are done.
You know all those joists are supposed to sit on top of that double beam not tie into it
There is a double beam further out that they sit on. The spot pictured here is where I cut out for stairs, maybe didn't show that well. the one pictured essentially replaces the ledger board. The stairs fit between the double and the house itself. Other videos I published might show better what I did. It was inspected by city code enforcement, and they loved it. I hope that clarifies it a bit. When I get around to a video on the stairs and railings I'll be sure to address this part as well. Thanks for the question.
What length lags did you use?
They went through the 4x4 and the notched header board, about another 1 3/4 inches I’m pretty sure they were 6 inch lags. They just have to be long enough to pass through all that wood with room for the bolts. Don’t neglect the washers on both sides they are critical. Good Luck!
Very helpful, thank you! (Nearly 4,000 views but just 53 likes??? Why are folks so stingy these days 😢)
Thanks, thats very kind.
For me it's the subtitles that were distracting
@@gregphillips4900 Thanks for the feedback, it helps.
@@Timsinterestingthings best of luck to you, my friend
Feels very AI generated
Not AI-generated! I spent hours researching this and produced it MYSELF using Descript PRO. I have a decade of experience in thrift retail leadership, have run multi-million dollar second-hand operations, and my own eBay store.
How do I go about finding a draftsman? I thought you needed a structural engineer to make plans? How much did a draftsman cost to hire?
Where I live, in Missouri, a small (mine is about 10 X 20) deck doesn't require an engineer unless there are unusual requirements. For example, a cantilever over 24" requires an engineer here, so mine is 23". I am sure there are other examples. Otherwise, a deck built to code and approved by the city inspector (who is an engineer) covers the bases in my area. Other states/municipalities may have different requirements. FYI, I passed the framing inspection on the first try. I'll post more about that soon. I don't remember how I came across him but his website is prodeckplans.com his name is Mike. He did a great job on the plans. I also asked him to do a materials list, but that wasn't great. The Lowe's Pro Desk did a better job. It cost around $150 and he had it done in a few days. I hope that helps! Good Luck.
How much did you pay the draftsman?
About $150. I found him on the internet, gave him the drawings I turned in for a permit (I took drafting in high school) some photos of the work area, the city I live in and some notes on things he needed to know. He asked a questions back to clarify and I had the drawings a few days later. Hope that helps.
You can add blocking to use that warped board... or cut it up to use for blocking.
Good question. I ended up using it for blocking. The highly warped sections I tossed.
@@Timsinterestingthings I figured, I thought that some of your viewers would like the idea. Great work.
Nice video - appreciate it!! Did you do anything regarding grading/ drainage prep under your deck prior to building?
Thanks for the kind note. Since I am on a hill erosion is a bigger concern. To address that we will have stone under the deck with a barrier underneath. I also moved a gutter drain pipe from one corner to the other. That one has been an ongoing issue so I'll trench and pipe that. Hope that helps!
Thanks for the compliment. Nothing in advance of beginning work. I will put a barrier down and gravel on the ground under the deck. There is also a drain pipe right next to where the stairs will end, I will do some underground pipe when I do the concrete work for the stair landing.
This is not quite true your positioning and reputation based on the quality of your work will get your referrals
Do it a million times and retire.
If it takes five min to make five bucks is one thing. Taking an hour to do the same is another.
I have been looking for rushtons to Collect. I absolutely love them they are so freaking adorable little beans💓
It's amazing how often thrift stores don't even know what they are. You have a superpower!
Another reason to sell online.
I found a toy in the garbage. the clerk told me I could not take it out of the garbage and besides it didn't work. He didn't realize I carry batteries to check toy functions and that it work just fine. The manager came over to find out what the problem was. He took the toy and the clerk in a back room. I waited only to have the manager come back and say he had to throw it away. PS, I did not even get my batteries back.
I WAS BIDDING ON AN ITEM AND WAS NOTIFIED I HAD WON. I WENT TO GETIT AND FOUND IT WAS REMOVED FROM THE AUCTION. WHEN I TRIED TO FIND OUT DETAILS I WAS TOLD IF I WANTED IT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY MORE.
Seriously, who cares. Thrfit stores are scams to begin with. These soroes raises prices on FREE donated goods under the assumption that the gains are going to charity. Therefore, they have absolutely no say on who's cheating since it begins at the top.
Stealing of any form is wrong, but this sort of thing is not unique to thrift shops. It goes on everywhere and you can control it only so much. That said, I see nothing wrong with allowing volunteers to have first crack at merchandise now and then. Whether the boss wants to let them have it for free, pay full price, or offer a discount is up to him.
