Not All Moats Surrounded Castles - What were they for?
Not all moats surrounded castles. In medieval times England had thousands of moated homes. Why was this a popular way to live? How many were there and are they still visible.
Join me as I find out about such moats and how they were used. We even get to see one!

What a lovely day for a walk - looking forward to the video :)
Thanks Barry.
Beautiful, thank you. Greetings from Flanders.
So this very old church was build maybe just before the Norman invasion of the year 1066?
Quite a while before - circa 1000 AD
@ oh, that’s very old, there are not so many buildings anymore from this time period.
@samdevries6280 It is indeed!
Anbody who can find the station from the high street is a real genius. I counted one signpost between half a mile and a mile from it. A truly bizarre town that has always been synonymous with abject misery to me.
Thanks Mark. That’s one that Wiltshire Highways department needs to sort out!
Hi . The building on the left corner of Stand Road near the end of your video was the former Racecourse pub.
Hi Chris That’s interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Wonder why the pubs closed?
Many have over the years as fewer people go to pubs. Right now, they are closing at an alarming rate.
I hope you are having a good time! I Love to watch your video. I watch almost all of your videos on TH-cam. But as a TH-cam expert, I am a little bit disheartened after watching your TH-cam view & subscribers count. However, you are making an effort. No matter how great your video is, if you don't do proper SEO and promotion, keyword research for your title, description, tags and more, you won't get more views & subscribers.
Thank you for placing your advertisement here 🙂 I get hundreds of messages from ‘TH-cam experts’ from Bangladesh and a few other places. None of them have their own TH-cam channel. I see that after 2 years you have 8 subscribers! One such expert stated one after I insisted that I won’t deal with anyone who can’t prove they can do the job. It was a disaster of a channel!
I get out as much as I can, especially when the blue sky is allowed to appear :)
That’s good, Barry. It’s nice to watch your outside videos made for your channel.
Come, can you come to a house cause it's s?N118M. Thirty-five let's put drive
Congratulations, Roland!! It really does take a looooooong time 😂 ( for me anyway)
Thank you 🙏
Lovely church. Would it be possible to go inside in a future video?
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and your interests keep it up
You’re very welcome. It’s my pleasure.
John Atyeo was teaching maths at Kingdown when I was there. I played golf with him on weekends at West Wilts golf course. He was the nicest person you ever could have met. I wish he was still with us, he was full of wisdom and such an amazing influence. RIP John.
Thank you for your comment. Everyone only has good things to say about John.
I think this is the moated area that the Victoria County History calls "Palace Garden".
Thank you for sharing. It’s good to hear from you.
National Trust property?
This one is English Heritage.
Lovely walk ! Beautiful village. Nice to be on the river. There's lots of deer around and about. 👍
Thank you, Pauline.
@@rolandstravels thanks🫠 Roland! You stayed in our cottage and then walked to Alport past our house. I wish I had known 🩷
@ Hi Pauline. Great to hear from you. It’s a lovely cottage and location. I have made a video about the cottage and hopefully more will want to stay. Holiday Cottage - A Tour of Chimney Pots Cottage, Youlgreave, Derbyshire th-cam.com/video/4nZfk1vDFWw/w-d-xo.html
@@rolandstravels yes I saw it quite by chance! I was thrilled. It's the perfect spot for a break. You can see deer sometimes running across the hills towards mitten wood. There's lots of sparrow hawks too. Thank you for featuring Chimney Pots. 👍
Built around the year 1000! The old girl is holding up pretty well. I assume the roof was replaced relatively recently.
I think it was restored around the late 19th century.
Who indeed....What other wandering loon would be doing this?!😂
Very interesting. Thanks from Africa 🌍.
Hi Yvonne. Thank you. I hope all is well.
Excellent - it is on my list to visit summer 2025! Lovely quick review and very informative. Cheers
Thank you. There’s plenty to see in Bradford on Avon.
Awesome!!
I received Holy Communion at a weekday service in this church.
Thank you for your comment.
Wow...running up those steps is great...well done. 😂
It keeps me fit!
Seperate entrances for boys and girls is uncommon/unheard of even today but the school must have been in operation long ago. Unless these are entrances to the changing rooms??
Yes it’s a very old school and separation ended a long time ago. It is a Victorian school.
Good swimming beach?
It is from the amount of people who use it. I am not a swimmer!
Great views. Any way you can actually go into a shop or 2 to get more of a local flavour?
Possibly.
@@rolandstravelsOf course thing is you have to ask permission to film.
@anderson49anders very true.
Thanks very informative.
Thank you for watching.
Thx always interesting to learn of the local history.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you.
No flowers put on grave sites?
Very rare on old ones and indeed not that often on recent ones.
Interesting comment about land ownership. Pros and cons I would think about opening up to development vs grazing purposes...
Nice Place to relax and enjoy nature
I found it to be very relaxing. Thank you for your comment.
@@rolandstravels thank You for this short
@@Airowemy pleasure. Thank you.
Beautiful countryside ❤
It is a lovely area. Thank you for commenting.
Beautiful and so chill. ❤
It certainly is! Thank you for your comment.
Visited this lovely building ,fasinated ,so old so simple.
It would be hard to imagine many things built today lasting so long! Thank you for your comment and for watching.
@@rolandstravels Is the main hall designed for the Roman Catholic Mass abandoned and blocked up inside by massive stone wall instead of entrance? What we see inside today is rather a small side chapel, not a church's hall and not a central altar.
It is Saxon and so very different to later churches.
@ This is a very simple Saxon church and nothing like the ones that came later in time.
Nice video, Roland
Thank you. It’s lovely to hear from you.
Very nice views and info about the history. Wonder if clock tower renovation got done? Also, although video is great sound pickup from traffic sometimes covers your voice.
Thank you. You may have noticed in more recent videos a move to counteract traffic noise. It’s amazing how many times I have to stop recording due to out of the blue events taking place. People who shout on their phones, barking dogs, those who insist on walking in front of the camera when it would have been easier and safer to walk behind me … I could go on! 😂 It’s unbelievable!
Wish I was there right this minute!
It would be nice to be there.
Tell us the truth Roland....just how many Wheatabix do you have each morning?!
A big fat zero 😀
Beautiful and a nice calm day 👍
The autumn shades will be coming through now.
Thank you, Roland. I really enjoyed this walking pace tour around a lovely town and gardens with someone who knows the history of the area. I've only just discovered your channel and I've got a lot of catching up to do!
It’s lovely to hear from you. Thank you for your kind words. I hope you enjoy my other videos and those yet to come.
v interesting video
Thank you. 🙏
Love it❤
It's a rich industrial heritage site. All of that Portland Stone which has been used in famous buildings.
Very nice. I can hear the conversation now "So where are you from?" "I'm from Frome 😅
It's a name that can cause pronunciation issues with those from further away!
Thx Roland.👍
You’re very welcome.
Very interesting. Thank you.
Thank you for commenting and letting me know that you found the video interesting.
Well done Roland. Great videos.
Many thanks!
Let's hope it is still standing in another thousand years.
There’s more chance it will than newly built property today!
A bit sarcastic, but maybe not wrong!
Apparently new build houses by large developers are built with an expected life of 70 years before major work will be required.
Roland....you'll wear your legs down to stumps at this rate!😂
Now you know why I am so short.
@@rolandstravels I know....but you were 6 foot two when you started these walks....
@BigBikeMad-ox8vo 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Ever scope inside the pubs? Of course then you might need to sample the local ales😂
That’s something I haven’t done. Unfortunately, I have an allergy to alcohol so sampling is no longer possible!
