I am wondering if you can help me with this question: In Non residential building, if we go with a prescriptive path for new building, it can comply without adding solar PV. Does this mean the prescriptive path only needs to have solar ready area? And do not need to have PV installed? Thank yoi

    Thanks so much for the class, I’m taking my first California Energy Code Class & I need as much supplementary class time as I can find. Out of all the codes, I do have a genuine interest in saving our recourses ...I know that we can do it if we try. Where California goes ... the world follows, and I’m very proud of that. I think that the powers that be own oil intersets & they will fight rather than change over to something which makes perfect sense ..

    I had tried for hours to get the Existing+addition/alteration project to comply, but without success, no matter how extremely efficient the DWH and HVAC system are. Then I watched this video again. After I checked the box" Existing ductwork not being altered", BAM! It complied. Thank you, Brian.

    I'm trying to do code compliance for converting a 576 sf garage to retail or office space. The California Building Code, under Title 24, Part 2 (general definitions) and Title 24, Part 10 (Existing Building Code) defines an addition as an increase in square footage or volume of a building. In following that I've been identifying all my improvements, including any required space conditioning, as alterations. Interesting to see that Title 24, Part 6 broadens the CBC's definition of addition to include new square footage or volume of conditioned space, not just the space itself. In my case I had thought the Existing Building Code definitions would control whether an improvement was an addition or an alteration. It seems that may not be so.

      More apparent conflicts between the codes -- Existing Building Code says alterations complying with laws in existence when a building was built, and materials in compliance when a building was built, shall be considered to be in current compliance. I'm having trouble reconciling that with my building department's requirement that I meet current energy code requirements for additions/alterations to my existing building that don't affect energy features that I'm being asked to update. For example, the wall insulation was installed in 1997 and was in compliance at that time. I read the Existing Building Code as providing that projects unrelated to wall insulation shouldn't trigger a requirement to bring wall insulation to current energy code requirements.

I am doing the same project on CBEEC RES 2019 and I have a question in regards to the Existing Garage Slab because my garage slab is 4 inches lower than the existing house floor and the garage slab is surrounded by the 4 inches height foundation walls (except the from wall where the garage door is) and I don't know if I should fill in the garage floor with more slab to the level of the foundation or to leave it as is and have the floor lower than the foundation walls? also in case I keep it low, how would I model the walls in this case? because now the walls are basically made of 4 inches concrete (from the foundation) and 8 feet wood-framed?

    What the heck is wrong with my software? After having problems with the separate house I designed. I modeled the same exact project and got - 128% not even close to your 2%. Any suggestions I want a refund since I spent 6 hours on my other house and it's still a negative 118% but they're saying I can't get one

    I'm having trouble with the drop down menus for Area level controls and Area Category areas on NRCC-LTI-E page 3 of 6. The drop down menus don't list the area types. I'm using windows 10, Adobe Acrobat X. Please help!

      Hello, Jim. I got your email about this and tried to email back last week but kept getting bounce back messages. The dropdown menus are populated based on the Compliance Method you selected in Table B. If you changed this Compliance Method, it possible the form logic got messed up. I also highly recommend using Adobe Reader 2017, it works best with these forms. If you are still having trouble with the pdf, you can use Energy Code Ace's online form completion tool.
