Awesome competition where you lead the horse through obstacles without using the line and mount and ride without using the reins. Ride without reins!!!! In this course while the handler is on the ground you must also stay within the hula hoop! So much fun! This was a very helpful video. Thank you. One comment; when you comment on the pictures of the two men, the one on the left on the bay horse is Eitan Beth-Halachmy, founder of Cowboy Dressage, riding Santa Fe Renegade, his Morgan stallion.. The emphasis is a bit different than in WD. This is not a WD competition photo. It is Eitan making a presentation about CD and he wears a lot of more tradition cowboy or Spanish attire.
Thank you for this extremely helpful presentation! I would love to know how Ida feels about black western tack. I am about to dip a toe in the western world and am saddle shopping and would like to know how a black saddle is perceived. Thank you!
I love black tack!!!! Looks especially good on gray , pinto, paints . I also like chocolate brown. Mostly it"s about looking put together and not garish so I can focus on the horse. I really like riders to wear gloves also!
@@idanorrisdressage6483… same, shopping for my bay TB, do you recommend which tack w what color accents?
Please show the turn on the haunches vs pivot. Thank you for your video instruction ❤
Noted!
Very helpful! Thank you! I’m doing my first virtual show in July for para dressage. 🐎
Good luck!!
@@idanorrisdressage6483 thank you! Just got home and it went great - will see what the judge thinks soon!
Great video! Thank you.
Thank you. I plan to order the whip you mentioned!
Thank you so much for this. Very helpful. What about the whip? I noticed you didn’t carry one. I struggle using one and trying to manage the lines as well, but my trainer insists that I get used to carrying one, and I get it!
I don't start folks with a whip just because some horses are tense with them. Your trainer is right that if you can manage it is a skill you want to develop and if you need you can start with a riding whip. I sell as very very light weight lunging/longlining whip which does help folks . If you need one contact me thru my website: Ida Norris dressage.com
WHAT TYPE OF SADDLE ARE YOU USING? I HAVE A SMALL 13.2 HAND HALFLINGER CROSS WITH A VERY SHORT BACK. THE SKIRT ON MY REGULAR SADDLE SKIRT IS 26 INCHS. I'LL LISTEN AGAIN I THINK YOU SAID IT AT THE END OF YOUR VIDEO.
HI! It's a Natural Horseman Saddle from Contour Saddlery. naturalhorsemansaddles.com/?ref=19268
Thank you-very clear example!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you!
You're welcome!
We are very blessed to have excellent judges to teach us in Va
Robyn is wonderful!!❤
Couldn't agree more!
Is the rider's inside leg supposed to be back?
Marie, If all is going correctly the inside leg is close to or near the girth, outside leg further back than the inside to support/guard the haunches from falling out or crossing in shoulder-in. Occasionally when a rider uses their inside leg it draws up or back .......I know it happens to me sometimes!
Great video on practicing half circles in Western dressage! The instructions on maintaining proper geometry and using the outside rein effectively were really helpful.
Great video on side passing in Western Dressage for gaited horses! The detailed instructions on lateral pole flexion and maintaining balance were really helpful. Keep up the good work, Ida Norris Dressage!

Hi Janice! We love you ❤ from VA!
Well done ladies!
I have a question about entering the pen. If you are at a show and its your turn to go and you are warming up in the pen..... you get your 45 second bell or whistle if you are in the arena do you have to EXIT then come in or can you stop where you are in the pen and get to the centerline at A without exiting the arena? I have been told both. so What is correct?
Hi! If management allows you to go into the ring BEFORE the bell you may enter by turning down the centerline or exiting and quickly coming back in. If you choose to exit make it prompt as the 45 seconds does not allow much maneuvering time. The ring steward will know what the horse show management is allowing and you can always check with them if they are requesting/suggesting one or the other style of entry which might be based upon the placement of the ring ( obstacles or inability to circle or go around the ring may impede entry). The arena/ring in Western Dressage is known as " the ring" or occasionally called the "court". Entry varies depending upon what the local situation is. At normal licensed WD shows you do not enter the ring for practice before the bell, you are slowed to go around the outside of the ring and when the bell is rung you enter from the outside. Whenever you are in doubt of what to do the safe thing is to enter promptly from the outside.
I love having a time to ride. I always try to be early.
Good tip. One of those things you don't really think about. 👍
To much fun!🎉🎉🎉
Love those Mustangs!
Interesting information.
Glad you think so!
Loved listening to the stories.
LOVE this IDA!!!
I am planning on getting a TWH to replace my normal WTC Dressage horse because of asthma making trot too hard now. This is inspirational!
How many mustangs have you worked with in Western Dressage?
I have been training horses since 1985 professionally . I have had 5 or 6 come in for training... worked out great! I coach/train/teach folks WD who are on Mustangs probably in the neighborhood of 10-15 people over the years as folks come and go. I currently train Dayna R. who rides only mustangs at this time. I judge a lot of them and there is one in almost every clinic I teach.
Funny 😂 stories
Can you do a video on the purpose in WD Intro of the *within scope of the jog*?
Anne, Thanks we'll try to get started on your suggestion! In the meantime- remember the poll should be higher than the withers for correct balance and swing in the back occurs when the horse tracks up in the jog.
All glory to Dr Abiola on TH-cam for curing me from Hiv with his herbal medication #drabiola 😊😊
Will you be talking about the twist in the seat?
I require an incredibly narrow twist in my dressage saddle. Amazingly enough I am extremely comfortable in the Western Dressage "regular" Contour saddle. The extra wide and deep seat model was too wide in the twist for me personally.
@@idanorrisdressage6483 Thank you for this info! Lovely saddles!
Your explanations helped so much. I am just starting WD lessons!

Really great video and I love the 💗transitions!
your videos are super helpful from a judge's perspective and how we can ride a better test. I am sharing them with the group of AA that all show together.

Very helpful Thank you.
You're welcome!
Thank you. Clear and great visuals
Cheers!
Thank you so much VERY interesting!
Always loved these exercises. We had to do them in college before every lesson. I liked how you used the phrase “standing on your horse” when talking about doing these exercises. So many riders “sit” on the horse and I think it creates a false way of thinking how riders need to position and use their seat.
Thank you SO MUCH for doing this clear & informative video explanation! Absolutely stellar!
