Fusion energy would revolutionize the way we power our world. It is the most efficient source of energy, and is clean, safe, and virtually limitless. Fusion is the way the Sun and all of the stars in the universe generate power. However, replicating this reaction on Earth in a commercially viable way (more energy out than in) is hard. Very hard. story 3: they rely on fossil fuels??? - Man, you are neglecting the impact of grid scale battery backup! it s having a PROFOUND impact on the utility of renewables and that impacts the rate at which renewable facilities are being built, and these grid scale battery backup systems are being bought by power companies just as fast as they can be made, with some companies having a 2 year backlog of orders. This is allowing renewables to be used as base load power, and some renewable facilities are now competing against peaker plants for spot power generation, AND WINNING!!! so...people are ALREADY turning away from fossil fuels.

    It's good news, that Commonwealth Fusion is building its first power plant in VA. This seems VERY optimistic since the SPARC facility isn't yet functional. I'd like to know more about how they've grown so confident. Now, isn't the location's nearness to those AI datacenters also helpful if they're going to use AI to run the facility? Or can they run the AI on local hardware in the plant?

    Yup, just like the free beer tomorrow jokes, controlled fusion energy is just a few years away. I’m not holding my breath. I’m quite happy with our current fusion reactor being the sun. Hell, we can directly harness its photons to create electricity. No need to mess around with boiling water to run a turbine. Talk about a giant gulf between theory, the lab and industrial scale energy production. ITER just announced another delay in their plans for sustained fusion capability. Sheesh.

      @StephenShankland 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Our secret sauce (not actually secret) is high temperature superconducting (HTS) tape, which lets us make magnets much more powerful and thus smaller. That in turn means our tokamaks are more compact, faster to build, with more economical power. We still have plenty to prove - our SPARC tokamak to demonstrate net fusion power (Q>1) is still under construction. But we're confident, backed by a peer-reviewed research that ensures independent scrutiny, and have been ticking through our to-do list. E.g. our TFMC magnet prototype test in 2021 and CSMC in 2024. Search for "CFS publications" to see highlights of our peer-reviewed research.

    Near the beginning of the above presentation was mention of the ‘break-even’ fusion experiment announcement from the National Ignition Facility’s (NIF) December 5, 2022, laser shot. Omitted was the following facts. That break-even goal was supposed to have taken place by 2012. The experiment took about a week to set up but the fusion reaction lasted for only 0.000,000,000,08 second. The force of the reaction, at the center hotspot, then blew away 96% of the expensive supplied fuel before it had an opportunity to fuse. That was then sucked into the target chamber vacuum pumping system. The quoted input energy, that heated and compressed the plasma, was less than 1% the energy required to pump the lasers. NIF has always been primarily funded as a thermonuclear weapon (H-bomb) research tool, not as a viable path to a future fusion energy power plant. Over $11 billion USD in federal revenues has already been sunk into that project that created enough fusion energy that could have boiled a few liters of water. Those, behind the FIA, could benefit from a course in critical thinking skills.

    Fusion energy fans have learned to capitalize upon the fear of global warming to promote their love affair with this technology. The FIA is a promotional organization that has learned to financially benefit from the interest that they create. Their sales pitches focus on advances that have been made while not covering such things such as the ITER grossly exceeding its original budget and now being well over a decade behind its original schedule. The FIA is composed of people who fell for the claims that the hydrogen fusion fuel is almost limitless. Their love affair prevented them from searching for the current commercial price of the radioactive tritium component of the fuel. It happens to be greater than $30,000 per gram. Of course, when confronted with that fact, they have numerous solutions to that problem, such as once the fusion technology is proven to be practical the fusion reactors will breed just enough tritium to fuel themselves. Search for the following article in the scientific journal Science. OUT OF GAS All promoters of nuclear energy are in line with the vast majority of the Earth’s 8.0+ billion humans who have masterfully excluded the following warnings from their consciousness. They continue to assume that we have at least 20 years left to turn this ‘Titanic’ around, through the use of their favorite technology. I urge readers to search for the following two article titles. Tokamak generates Whistler waves at a certain frequency. This is also found in atmospheric sprite production when Antihydrogen plasma flows through the electromagnetic field lines of the ionosphere. The signature is helium production. While the electromagnetic field is available the separation of matter and antimatter is possible. The reason why there’s no annihilation is the rematching of those two properties. Antihydrogen fusion is reproducible and will outperform all fusion.

    The FIA exists to promote fusion energy and it’s clearly rather successful but this presentation reported nothing new. Where are for example the reports on DT experiments, methods of enriching lithium, high energy neutron irradiation experiments and tritium breeding experiments - all absolutely essential before any fusion reactor can be built. The only result mentioned was the irrelevant NIF ‘more energy out than in’ work - irrelevant since it ignores the massive energy used to put the energy into the target.

    Long before fusion gets onto the grid, a fusion machine that drives a HEAT EXCHANGER will need to demonstrate it can operate for months at a time with reasonably low maintenance. I am very suspicious, because no one has talked about this. Only a sustained heat-exchanger demonstration will prove the thermodynamic gain, reliability, and running costs.

      Virtually all the present research is still focused upon achieving more fusion thermal energy output the the amount of ohmic, microwave and particle beam energy required to heat the plasma to fusion temperatures. The experimental directors continue to avoid answering questions such as ‘the amount of energy consumed by the facility during a 24-hour period of time during which the experimental shots are conducted. Almost all fusion experimental reactors will be required to operate in a pulsed mode when operating at near the maximum fusion energy level. The ‘duty cycle’ could be very low in which case each pulse peak amplitude may be extreme. That would likely result in damaging thermal cycling. Most experimental plans don’t include a two-stage heat removal system, a tritium breeder blanket, tritium processing systems, a steam generator, a steam condensing system, a turbine, a generator and an electrical substation. Those, immersed in the experiments, assume that others can easily work those things out. The project promoters have become masterful in distracting outsiders from inquiring into these key evaluation criteria. They all know to avoid mentioning that tritium is radioactive, that it is extremely rare and expensive. They also avoid mentioning most of the planned reactors will operate in a pulsed mode and if they do mention that they avoid noting the length of the fusion reaction period and the machine duty cycle. Most of the administrators have convinced themselves that detail is irrelevant for any critics that are trying to evaluate the viability of the technology.

    The phenomenon of nuclear fusion does not have any reasonable theory; the mechanism of fusion is unknown to now. The present theories of quantum mechanics, quantum chromodynamics, electroweak theory and nuclear forces are unable to explain reactions of nuclear fusion. Until there is a clear theory of this phenomenon, there will be no reliable experiment focused on an industrial result, that is, a continuous nuclear fusion reaction of light elements. So, where is the theory? Are leading journals capable of publishing such a theory, as it would certainly bring a significant revision to the existing theories listed above?..

    Fusion... yes... when I was recent engineering grad, like yourself, there was equally optimistic news on fusion. Since then (40 years) we have managed to harness energy from the only, 'local', working, fusion reactor. And now we're creating a terawatt+ of power every day - pollution-free. Over the years it has become abundantly obvious that even if net power-positive fusion is ever created, the power will be far from pollution-free. In fact things are going to get radioactive pretty quickly and we'll be back to the fission nightmare were the instant a power plant is started, that is the last time that piece of land will be used for farming, housing or indeed anything other than a pit in to which vast quantities of money are poured for a hundred plus years (see Sellafield). To power our civilization on this planet, we only have to look to the sun, the wind and the inexhaustible supply of heat beneath our feet to supply every kWh of energy we will ever need.

    OK you’re using panels anyway which means segmented and you can have sensors watching the plasma in each area. It looks like the wave of energy travels around the reactor, and you can use a feedback loop to control the magnetic containment field. The feedback from panel one is fed into panel two so as the energy wave arrives, it can use the magnetic field to choke the energy.
