    Ours is a paper bin sized device that inputs deuterium and outputs helium and electric current. Originally made at the Rutherford lab in 1969 . It cost just over $1000. I suggest we use it. The tokomaks are expensive failures. Christopher strevens

So all we need now is a fully controlled fusion reaction, (just like nuclear fission,) one that will generate almost limitless amounts of almost free energy; after all how hard can it be ? 1962 We're not quite there yet but any day now. 1972 Still a few, "technical," difficulties but we've cracked it in principle. 1982 With the better application of new cutting edge state of the art technology and systems it's almost within reach. 1992 With only few more billion dollars of investment we're now absolutely certain that we can get a result. 2002 OK Maybe the last estimates were a bit over optimistic, but with a mere few billion dollars more it's finally become feasible. 2002 Nearly there. 2012 Any moment now. 2022 Still nothing to see yet, move along please.

    Do I really need to point out the MASSIVE glaring show-stopping fault in Xcimer's plan to "only fire at a single [fusion] pellet every few seconds"?? A power plant typically produces around half a gigawatt to a gigawatt of power to the grid, the Carnot efficiency of most plants is around 35%, meaning the plant's reactor is actually producing 1.5 to 3 gigawatts of thermal power to actually spin the turbines. There is a REASON every proposed hypothetical future laser ICF reactor assumes the laser will need to fire on at least 10 pellets per second (10 Hz), because 2 gigawatts of power (2 gigajoules per second) divided into 10 pellet implosions is actually doable; it means each implosion "only" needs to release 200 megajoules of energy. A reactor firing once every 10 seconds like Xcimer proposes will need to produce ONE HUNDRED TIMES AS MUCH energy as that per shot - 20 GIGAjoules per implosion. That's the equivalent of FIVE TONS of TNT going off with every target shot. Do you know how incredibly enormous a target chamber you will need to contain a five ton TNT blast is going to be, such that it isn't blown to smithereens and destroying the building it's contained in on the first shot?

      I'm not a fan of inertial confinement approaches, and even less so of laser-induced implosion, but the comparison to the effects of five tons of TNT is not correct. The energy released in a TNT explosion goes into the production of a large amount of hot, high-pressure gas that indeed tends to push out and away any close, confining structure. The energy released by the fusion of a much smaller mass of D+T does not produce such tons of hot gas, but produces a lot of high-energy neutrons which can be absorbed in surrounding material (the liquid salt) and heat that material without blowing it up.

      @@NiklasHolsti I will grant that the comparison is imperfect, but the blast wave and amount of either FLiBe or liquid PbLi vapor created with a 20GJ detonation is still going to be unbelievably huge and require an absolutely enormous target chamber, to say nothing of the hellacious effects on the final optics.

      You cannot compare TNT explosions with explosions from fusion pellets. Most of the energy in DT fusion (4/5) is caried by neutrons traveling close to the speed of light. Because neutrons are uncharged they penitrate deep into the surrounding blanket material. Neutrons thermalize (slow down) by colliding with atoms inside the blanket. This increases the blanket's temperature. Some materials contract when heated, but if the blanket is made of FLiBe, increasing the temperature causes expansion. Either way, the pressure change due to a change in density would be insignificant and confined within the blanket material itself. If the reactor is going to be blown to smithereens, as Muonium1 seems to think it will be, then the explosive force needs to come from the outwardly directed mometum. However, compared to TNT explosions, an equivalent energy nuclear explosion only produces a tiny fraction as muh outwardly directed momentum. This is because momentum (mv) and kinetic energy (mv * v/2) are conserved, and nuclear reactions produce particles having more than a million times the kinetic energy that chemical reactions produce. Unless I am mistaken, the fusion energy from an Xcimer pellet might be measured in tons of TNT and still only produce a firecracker's worth of outwardly directed explosive force. :-)

It's going to VAPORIZE large quantities of the metal and cause the formation of a powerful shock wave in the target chamber. It's literally a miniature thermonuclear bomb going off. 50% of a nuclear bomb's energy is emitted in the form of a blast / shock wave. So yes, you are mistaken. Very.

    The information you present is very interesting, thanks. But I have some suggestions for improving the presentation and helping viewers: 1) use a microphone to eliminate the echoing; 2) try to avoid "reading aloud" because it makes for unnatural, monotonous speech that is hard for listeners to parse; 3) shorten your sentences - the long sentences probably arise from reading text aloud, and make you either run out of breath towards the end of the sentence, or to unnatural and confusing breaks in the flow when you take a new breath in the middle of a sentence. HTH!

    3:26 She mentions Kyoto and net zero in an interview elsewhere. It is interesting that Kyoto is a name quite prominent in the climate narrative. As a mechanical engineer she is probably familiar with the mechanical concept of heat energy. If you hit a rock with a hammer it heats up. Is it just a coincidence that the hurricane and Arctic sea ice extent graphs are identical to the earthquake energy graph going back a hundred years as are the original temperature graphs before they were altered right before the election between a Texas oil candidate and a climate activist to change the long term cooling trend into a warming trend? It is a shame to see innocent people drawn into the climate deception while certain snakes with PhD's laugh and cheer. But their laughing and cheering w.ill turn to wailing and gnashing of teeth.

    Nice see the latest in tokomaks. Strikes me that they are going ahead without a working prototype. Our configuration delivers and our prototype runs on air as a chemical fuel. I've not tried deuterium except in 1969 at the Rutherford when we powered a 1/4hp electric motor I've been ignored ever since. Total disbelief. Then the psychiatrist attacked and I lost my job.

    What the heck is that bouncing hot "particle" at the top of the WEST tokamak at 4:35??!? It can't be an actual particle, it would be knocked around the vacuum vessel toroidally as soon as it hit the plasma and wouldn't be so regular in its motion. It can't be a Thomson scattering laser beam, the time scale of the video is way too long for a light pulse to be slowed down to what's seen here, and why wouldn't it be traversing the entire bulk of the plasma.... Edit: aha, I thought of something! I bet it's actually a Langmuir probe. A metal ball on a stick that's being periodically mechanically "dipped" into the plasma volume to measure the e temperature and density in the plasma directly. It's being rapidly heated to incandescence every time it hits the edge of the plasma, I bet.

Take a silver wine chalice and use small jets of compressed air swirling around the bottom and up the sides of the chalice to evacuate the center of the chalice. Inject a tiny jet of hydrogen in through the stem of the chalice. Hydrogen atoms that contact the sides of a tiny hole in the center of a hundred thosand volt positive plate at the bottom of the chalice will turn the hydrogen into a beam of ions. A ring around the top of the chalice charged up to a hundred thousand volts will trap some of the hydrogen ions in a cylindrical volume in the center of the chalice. Put negative voltage plates around the outer edge of the cup at 200 thousand volts. The negative plates should help evacuate the center by pulling ionized air away from the center. . The positive charge in the middle should help establish a better vacuum by pushing positive air ions away from the center that will force air out along with it. Ionizing radiation from the central plasma that strikes the inner surface of the surrounding air will release electrons that will be driven into the plasma by the surrounding negative plates. If enough excess electrons buildup in the plasma, the negative voltage will confine fusion temperature ions. If the plasma is about a billion degrees, tiny particles of Boron11 injected into the plasma will result in fusion between Hydrogen and Boron ions. If the plasma is hot and dense enough, Xrays and other radiation pressure will enhance the vacuum around the plasma by driving air away from the plasma.     1. Zap's Z-pinch method will never work because of the problem of plasma scattering problem. for fusion to happen the ions need to hit dead on. The plasma density and non polar\chaotic direction of ions will prevent it from producing over unity energy. The Univ. of Wisc. experimented with this method over 20 years ago, with dismal results. 2. Common Wealth's compact reactor using High temperature Superconductors is doomed from the start because high neutron flux produced by fusion cause squelching of the superconductor material (ie suddenly losing superconducting). This is way ITER abandoned the use of HT Superconductors during the design phase 20 years ago.

      Certainly superconducting magnets will be sensitive to neutrons, but they will be, and must be, protected by the metre thick layer of lithium that is needed to breed tritium. Whether that can be done efficiently is another question.

      @@johnh6245 The point was to make a compact reactor. The SC magnets would have to be on the inside considering lithium is a metal & conducts electricity. its not going work any way it would operate at too high of plasma density. ITER is big because its goal is low pressure plasma to avoid plasma scattering problems. Ions need to hit each other dead on. a glancing impact is a dud (no fusion. When you have too many plasma ions colliding into each other the scatter decreasing the ability to collide dead-on and fuse. Fusion power is doomed as the costs for a power plant with breeding blanket, & power extraction would cost more than 10 times of a fission system.ITER will cost more than $32B for a 500MWth with no breeding & no power extraction. I don't know anyone that is going to want to pay about $5kwh of electricity considering in most the world is less than $0.50 kwh.

      @@guytech7310The lithium is conducting, but so is the first wall and that seems not to be a problem. Most of the neutrons have to be captured in lithium or a lithium compound. In any case, you are right about the cost of fusion. The complexity of the structure makes that so obvious, but seems to be ignored by all the startup companies.

      @@johnh6245 The vacuum enclosture is thin, not a meter thick. Magnetic confinement is dead anyway because its impossible to stablize, because the plasma carries a current which interacts with the containment field causing it to destablize. The longest run to date is about 5 minutes, & was a fluke (not repeatable). Realistically researchers should have built lots of small (desktop size) systems to work on the solviing the stability rather than building huge machines. Fusion researchs appears to be a jobs program & little to do with actual science.

    Fusion NEWWWWSSS lovely accent <3 but ngl you should use a other micro with better mid frequencies, like a shure or smth just as friendly feedback its not nice to listen to this even though you have clearly a really nice voice (or it may be from a hall in your apartment but i doubt that ngl may a popper also would help :P). Bc Fusion needs more attention pls don't underestimate such small things. Hm actually its getting harder with the longer i listen on where it exactly fails but please try a diffrent microphone. This here has some reverb some unbalanced frequencies some even feel like overdrive or smth idk

    Fission and fusion are inherently linked, there are some internal processes that are an exact mirror, fission has beta decay of electrons, fusion has beta decay of positrons. Fission is about 1M times more energy dense than chemical energy, fusion claims to be about 3.5 better still, that tiny extra amount has a huge cost though. Fission would have very high perfomance at only 1000K. Fusion is practically impossible at 100,000 that temperature. They both produce neutron flux, fission has a neutron gain of about 2.5 while fusion has massive losses. Fission produces tritium as a waste product, fusion usually requires tritium but has no practical sources for it. Both can breed fuel, fission can breed fissile material into fissionable material, ie thorium232 or uranium238 into uranium233 or plutonium239 resp. Fusion can in theory breed tritium from lithium but has a gain a fraction of 1. Berylium could double that but it is still less than 1. Most of the tritium isn't even burned. Neutron flux in fission reactors is used to make heat in water or other coolant as the neutrons are slowed down. Neutron flux in fusion reactors must hit the containment vessel and irradiate it turning it into nuclear waste. Some of that flux might produce tritium but not enough to sustain reaction. Fusion has to do many impossible things at the same time, very high temp plasma, irradiated hot walls next to cryogenic cooled magnetics with a water loop inside the vessel walls. Fission reactors can use simple physics to run in stable mode, no computer control is generally needed, other than monitoring. Fusion reactors are inherrently unstable and require computers and now AI to learn how to control them. An elementary fission reactor that produces as little as 1MW of continuous heat is a very low cost university level effort. An elementary fusion reactor that produces as much as 1MW of continuous heat is a very high cost world level effort and won't succeed for another 1000 years. Do let the world know when tritium is allowed to burn in a fusion reactor on a continuous basis, and tells us about the source of the tritium and damage done to the vessel. In thermonuclear weapons, a fission device always triggers a fusion component which then further amplifies the second stage of fission. Fission, fusion, fission play well together. If public perception of fission is negative, wait till they understand the ramifications of fusion. I have to wonder why no one is talking about Lithium Deuteride as a fuel, no breeding needed, but its used in thermonuclear bombs so is kinda top secret.

      Well the tritum problem is easily fixed... use more abundant heavier elements and raise the chamber temperature they don't use hydrogen isotopes in thermonukes... instead use the lithium 6 and fission bomb splits it into hydrogen isotopes and provides the heat/pressure to recombine it all.

      No one country will ever master fusion technology, but it only takes a good university to master a basic fission power plant, and when pressed, fission plants can be rolled out in a single decade. During the oil crisis of the 70s, France completely switched from burning oil for power to having a large nuclear fleet of power plants in a decade.

      And not a single difficult problem mentioned, where is the fuel source, what is the neutron gain, what about when the walls start to get irradiiated by neutron flux in the presence of tritium in the proximity of liquid helium cooled superconducting magnets near a 100M K plasma and a water loop all in the same device, its so simple in the comic book version.

Of course there are problems, and of course it is hard, they are not trying to bake a cake here. In any event, they are providing a fusion market update for our benefit, not providing a presented thesis on how to build a fusion reactor and solve all the problems that currently exist.

    The disconnect between "Fusion" and "Nuclear Fusion" reminds me of when the term NMR was changed to MRI so that people wouldn't be scared of the word "nuclear" in the imaging machine that is going to scan them. Maybe it should be called "Particle Merging Energy" :D
