    HiMikey- do you respond to comments? I'm getting back into the Coco2 and am looking for a COCAVGA without much luck. I just bought a couple serial cards from the guy down under for $145 and 3 coco2's and 2 CCR-82's... My goal is to get at lease a couple Coco2's set up with cassette, expansion, RS-232, dial-up and ethernet. Ultimately get them set up with packet radio/TNC.. AL6O... Looking to get a network of ACTIVE Coco2 enthusiasts... Would be great to use KiCad to put all this stuff on a single board.. Perhaps replace the 6809 and some other chips with a $25 FPGA. would be awesome to have both Extended Color Basic/Edtasm with higher res graphics and more memory. Thoughts? Cheers to you, Charlie Bader

    WOW, Flex for the SWTPC 6800, this is something that I've archived the software for, and have several friends restoring SWTPC machines that will use the original version of FLEX. Before seeing your video, I NEVER considered that it was adopted/ported to the CoCo...VERY cool! This video now belongs on my SWTPC Playlist for this very reason!

    Um so what was under the yellow square? What a bizarre way to send chips in the mail.

    • @MikeyN6IL
      @MikeyN6IL 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's not really bizarre at all. If you think about it, USPS first-class letters are sped through automated sorting machines. If you watch videos of these machines it should be clear that they exert some clamping force on the letters as they go through. This is no problem if the letter contains a folded stack of documents. It is a different story if the letter contains electronic components. The cardboard is a cheap way to allow the letter to pass through the machinery and to prevent that clamping force from squeezing the chips too much and breaking them or bending the pins.

    I was a COCO guy from the first D board 4k units, but never used flex. I find it interesting that they chose an OS to use a video mode that took 6k of RAM and a lot more processing time/effort to draw the characters vs. just using the text mode built into the VDG.. Did it get used much? Was there a lot of graphical software for flex or a reason to justify this in hindsight?

    Great program, especially for OS-9/NitrOS-9, because I can have the program running in a seperate window and can easily change disks. What I have noticed is; that the disk labelling of 1 and 2 for selections, gets a little bit confusing since actual drive numbers are 0 and 1. And 0 and 1 are shown as mounted drives. I would like to see uniformity in drive labels and selections. I also love that under OS-9/Nitros, that the program uses current screen size and color sets. It would be cool to have a 40 column width option for DECB. 80 column is sometimes difficult to read using composite video. Otherwise, fantastic program. Much gratitude for creating it.

    • @MikeyN6IL
      @MikeyN6IL ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the feedback. About the choice of using 1 and 2 for the mount and umount keys. The SDC always numbers it’s drive slots 0 and 1. So those keys could be used for mounting drives. There would be a big problem trying to use Shift-0 for unmount… since that’s CapsLock the program would never get a key event for it. So I know it’s inconsistent but using the first 2 keys on the left of the keyboard seemed like the best compromise in this situation. About the screen size - the program is currently designed for a 51x24 screen which is what’s used in the DECB and FLEX versions. It will also work without changes in 64 and 80 width screens (such as with a CoCoVGA or CoCo3) . I can look into squeezing the app into a 32x16 screen, which would also work at 40x16. This should be doable with some refactoring so that it can be switchable at compile-time with a # define.

  • @HelloKittyFanMan
    @HelloKittyFanMan ปีที่แล้ว

    "You could do fun things like creat[ing] operating systems! And the first real operating system to appear for the Color Computer, of course, was FLEX." Um, no, the first one was the OS that came built into the computer. We had to have been able to use it without home-level cross-dev. before the disk drives were ever available for it. You're not telling me that you had to find a machine to write an OS on and then port to the Tandy so it could even runt at all, before this disk system, are you?
