Hi, and thanks for stopping by. My goal here is to document various railroads and railroad museums, particularly those in the Northeast, in order to preserve moments that may or may not have been witnessed by others. Whenever possible, I also like to focus on the men and women who make these railroads run. I hope you enjoy my findings.
Berkshire Scenic Excursion to Canaan, CT
A trip on the Berkshire Scenic Railway between Lenox, Massachusetts, and Canaan, Connecticut, on May 17, 2008, organized by the Massachusetts Bay Railroad Enthusiasts. The train consisted of seven heavyweight commuter coaches (hailing from Berkshire Scenic, Holyoke Heritage Park Railroad, etc. unless those railroads are one and the same??) and lead by Berkshire Scenic Railway Museum Alco SW(?) No. 8619 and Housatonic Railroad RS-3M No. 9935.
This was all filmed using a short-lived camera fitted with batteries that, unbeknownst to me at the time, were incompatible with it. As such, said batteries ran down both unpredictably and frighteningly quickly, leaving me caught off guard when the camera shut down right before the trips photo runby. Luckily, I restocked when the train got to Canaan and shot the rest of the trip without much incident (including the clever switching job at Canaan- performing a run around without a passing siding!), but yeesh. A nuisance! (And this is why the photo runby scene ends so abruptly.)
It was really neat to see the huge, Victorian-style Canaan station, which had been nearly destroyed by fire only several years ago. Very fortunately, the station was restored to its current appearance rather than torn down. Today, youd never guess the building was ever damaged. Further, a passenger train in front of the station is a very rare sight. Scheduled excursion trains on this route only travel between Lenox and Lee, many miles north of the MA/CT border!

Day at the Susquehanna (Part 1) (Reupload)
มุมมอง 94715 ปีที่แล้ว
(This is a reupload of a video I originaly posted September 12, 2008 for some reason, that video came out all jerky and "wrong" the first time I posted it. But I thought that the footage was pretty good and definitely deserving of a second chance, so here we go!) (Edit August 17, 2010: original video deleted.) Original Description: A day spent in Phillipsburg, New Jersey, watching beautiful Chi...
Moscow Excursion, August 16, 2008 (Part 2)

Here is some footage of the actual trip to Moscow, lead by CN 3254, starting with its departure from Scranton. A great experience as always. : )
Moscow Excursion, August 16, 2008 (Part 1)
มุมมอง 34515 ปีที่แล้ว
This is really a montage of shots of CP Pacific No. 2317 and CN Mikado No. 3254 doing their things during the hours leading up to train time for the Moscow Excursion. With 2317 powering along with the Scranton Limited and 3254 simmering away on the ready track, Steamtown seemed more like a steam-era rail hub and less like a scrap yard than usual. When both engines were switching around simultan...
Strasburg Afternoon
มุมมอง 82316 ปีที่แล้ว
Strasburg Rail Road, August 13, 2008. This is the result of some train chasing towards the end of a fine summer's day in Lancaster County. No. 90 was proudly leading the day's trains and was captured in a rather interesting hybrid Strasburg/Great Western lettering scheme. Going out to wait for the train at one of the country crossings (by the farm and corn maze) was a fun experience. Of course,...
Of Diesels and Freight Cars-- Scranton, Pennsylvania
มุมมอง 36616 ปีที่แล้ว
Steamtown, August 11, 2008. No steam to be found on this rainy visit, but we did see NKP GP9 No. 514 dutifully pushing its two car Scranton Limited around the yard. There was freight action going on on the Delaware Lackawanna, but we kept managing to miss it... we'd leave, come back, and find that long strings of freight cars had moved around the freight sidings in our absence. This happened......
Day at the Susquehanna (Part 2-- with full stop at the maze)
มุมมอง 52416 ปีที่แล้ว
After having lunch and watching 142 arrive and depart Phillipsburg a couple of times, we went out to catch it on the high iron. The weather wasn't at its greatest, but a little rain didn't stop us! An entire 6-minute stop at the corn maze is included here... as well as some slow-speed "chasing." Taken August 10, 2008.

Maine Eastern to the Airshow (Part 1)
มุมมอง 1.2K16 ปีที่แล้ว
August 26, 2008- a railroad excursion of the old school. This trip, organized by the Massachusetts Bay Railroad Enthusiasts, Inc., went from Brunswick, Maine aboard the Maine Eastern Railroad to Rockland, where passengers could take a connecting bus to the Owl Head Transportation Museum to see a real live air show. It was quite a day.
A Tour of the Rockport Station, July 2008
มุมมอง 1.1K16 ปีที่แล้ว
A wooden freight house... an ancient diesel freight derrick... a set of track pans dating back to the Budd Car era... these are but a few of the uniquely railroadian sights that can still be seen at the terminal station yard at Rockport, Massachusetts. History has been frozen here for years... but alas, time will soon be up for the station. Having finally fallen into the gun sights of town and ...
Chasing the Valley Train
มุมมอง 3.1K16 ปีที่แล้ว
Taken on June 8, 2008 along the Conway Scenic Railroad. The train, led by GP7 No. 573, pulls into Bartlett, New Hampshire, having come from North Conway. At Bartlett, the engine runs around and the train heads back. It's then caught running over the 302 highway crossing just south of Bartlett and again at Glen, where the tracks parallel the road. Please excuse the shaky camera work near the end...
Scenes around North Conway station, June 7, 2008

Nothing too exciting, admittedly. I was rather devilishly pleased to see U-Boat No. 2820 pushed out of service, for the time being, at least... and it was neat to see some of the work being done on 0-6-0 No. 7470's tender deck. With the folliage season still several months away, only the Valley Train was running, and GP7 No. 573 was doing the honors on that job. This was really a classic case o...
Valley Railroad Runaround
มุมมอง 99016 ปีที่แล้ว
Shots of the Valley Railroad at Essex, Connecticut, taken June 29, 2007. As I understand it, footage was being shot for the newest Indiana Jones movie just a week or two before this visit. Note that engine No. 40 had just come out of an overhaul when this was taken, and is wearing a sparkling new coat of black paint she hadn't even been re-lettered yet.

142 is walter g rich
It would be nice to see passenger service restored again.
Some day I would love to get down there to see and maybe take a ride on that train.
just how i remember it lol came here back in 2001-2006 with my mom and her ex boyfriend one of my favorite places still can see purple trains in my mind was 5 years old my first time out there
I remember taking the train From Lee to NYC. When I moved to NY I use to go back on weekends to visit my friends. This was the last 50"s and early 60's
@AttiK Broken crankshaft.
my grandmother lives 10 mins away from horseshoe curve :)
@Bassfanatic94 2317 does have a stoker, though they weren't using it a lot on this visit. I did see the K4 in the Steamtown roundhouse as of last year...
Does this engine have a stoker? Also, is the K4 still there?
Unfortunately, I can't say that I know. (I do know that it doesn't happen often... this was the first passenger train to ply these tracks in 50 odd years, as I understand.) But perhaps more trips will be made now considering that the first one was a hit. I'd recommend getting in touch with either the MBRRE or Berkshire Scenic itself for more news or info...
7:50, kid on a leash!!!
I love seeing steam right where it belongs.....ON THE RAILS, RUNNING! I helped restore and help run and maintain CN #2141, still get chills watching the rods flashing away in the sun. Great video.
Yes, she does look the part! (Only the long crankpins on the rear drive wheels reveal the adjustment.) I agree, it is a shame that so much of the Maine two-foot gauge has been torn up... but luckily, we have folks like those at the WW&F working to bring a little bit of it back to life!
No. 10 is an original, steam era locomotive, though she is not original to the old WW&F, nor was she built to two-foot gauge. I believe she started life as a 30-inch gauge engine working in the south, and has since been re-gauged. I'm not sure entirely, but Edaville might have made this adjustment before the engine finally found home at the restored WW&F. So, in short, I guess she's a restoration. : )
They were working on 26 this past Thursday Oct. 22-09 putting in her stay bolts. Len.
the 2820 is old not new, locomotive like these, the word new is the exact opposite of what they are
No prob.
I know it's rare to see a change in power but when there is a change of power Rail Fans get excited =D
They have used the B&M for the Valley Train. And The Fp-9's (otherwise known as The Sisters) are The main power for the notch.
would the b&m acually run the valley train? and the fp9s are the two csrr painted engines that run the notch right now correct?
the 573 wont be out of service for a long time trust me they cherish that engine but its very good to know that the b&m is back up
yes thanks
Yep, the crankshaft.
Ex-Boston & Maine F-7
Its actually a U23-B, If it were a U-18B, it would have a V-8, lol.
Ok, #501 is Ex-Maine Central W-class 2-8-0. Alco built her in 1910 ( I believe ) She is owned by the 470 RR club, out of Portland, Me, as is #4268, the other B&M F-unit at CSRR, and how they got her, I beileve that she was at Steamtown, in Vt, and was bought down in the 80's, Before my time, so I wouldn't know. Hope that helps aywho
The Boston & Maine F-7 It's back up for Notch & Valley services when either 573 (Gp-7) or one of the Fp-9's are "Out of Service"
whats the 4266?
yeah whats the 501 just sitting there for ? howd it get there?
Yeh, go figure. : D
Who says things made in china are crap?
That's cool. : ) We met him in the cab when the engine was still "warming up" in the Scranton yard... he said that the trip we were about to go on was going to be his first training run as an engineer. I guess he did all right, then!
Don't quote me on it, but I seem to recall hearing something on it was broken.
Where is this place in PA? I see this the show extreme trains, and I like to check it out one day when I go to PA.. Also i want to see the horse shoe as well for North folk railroad.
Haha, it was good, until seven in the morning when the first train rolled around. But I was little then, and my cousin and I would run outside in our pajamas and watch the locomotive turn around. We even tried climbing the signal a few times. :U
Hey, that's pretty cool! What I'd do to live in a house right next to a railroad like that. : )
Ahh! The white building straight across from where you were standing is the condo I grew up in! :D Those were the best memories. This is why I'm obsessed with trains, lol.
'Twas indeed.
Was this the railfest that they have every year
i dont get it
Go to an Ohio Central event. I am now 15 but this year i was 14 and i got to drive 1293 out of Newark Ohio. I have two videos of me in the cab. Byesville is a good chance to get a cab ride.
your welcome! awesome job!
Thanks!
awesome catches!
You Know. I know that guy with the beard. His name's Bruce. He's awesome!
cool
Went to see Steamtown again about a month ago-- 26's boiler was still off of the engine, but both the boiler and the engine looked like they had received work. I'm afraid I don't know too many specifics, though.
I figured as such-- I was delighted to see it!
the Amtrak train was probably the Pennsylvanian
4:48 u rarley see a switcher on a main line
