This was done quite well, and was extremely interesting and informative. This is the one time in American history that intrigues me, so much happened. The British were scary people… the Hessians were just as scary, if not worse. This battle set the scene for the infamous Legend of Sleepy Hollow.. it’s actually based on historical events. I think it’s safe to say that the Hessian indeed lost his head during cannonade from the American Colonists, ( who knows where they took his head , but they buried his body in the Old Dutch Church Cemetery . )

What a load of bull and an insult to Americans let alone the British .The painting shown as a "Loyalist" is actually Sir Banastre Tarleton the BRITISH Commander of the British Legion a provincial unit raised in New York , served from 1778 to 1781 became MP for Liverpool England and served with distinction against Napoleon . I hope he was a Loyalist ! You would do well to use him as a role model .The whole narrative just went downhill from there into a propaganda rant . The British Army was and still is a volunteer professional army , no conscription here . Thousands of American colonials volunteered their services others sought refuge in Canada , 13 tribes who wanted to keep their land from the hands of the greedy colonials , volunteered and many of the 4000 slaves the British freed also volunteered to serve l The system of recruitment is based on the numbers in our county militias 5000 miles away . The Hessians were part of the British Army NOT mercenaries. The King was German and also ruled principalities in "Germany". Germany did not exist as a nation at that time. Throw away your kindergarten books and do some research . It's incredible what primary source material you can find on the subject using the Internet . Saves endless hours wading through contemporary records for 5 years at the British Library as I did . Come on children " April Morning " and " The Patriot " are not historic accounts of the Rebellion , so please stop trying to rewrite history . If you get too excited you'll be claiming the Green Berets ( US 10th SF created in 1952 ) are decendant from Rogers Rangers , another Loyalist unit part of the British Army raised in New Hampshire and the forerunner of the present day Canadian Queens York Rangers (1st American Regiment) and still Loyalist to this very day .

While what you said is mostly true.. the British DID infact force captured Americans to serve in the Royal Navy. It's been documented we know it happened.. so you might not have conscription but you have forced people to serve in your army before. (Not sure how well the British public were treated)

@@AmericanTough The Crown advocated impressment for the Royal Navy which applied to all subjects domestic and colonials at times of conflict and mostly targeted coastal ports for merchant seamen on down time or between employment with the added effect of controlling drunkeness and crime . Although still lawful up until the 1830s it fell out of use after the need for a large navy came about after the defeat of the French at Waterloo. The Royal Navy was considered the first line of defence and vitally important since Tudor times . The British Army having lost its ' Royal ' status for raising arms against the King during the English Civil Wars ( which is why we have the Royal Air Force , Royal Navy and British Army today ) was under the control of Parliament and therefore the same protection as any other citizen ( domestic and colonials) laid down by Parliament , and during times of conflict 'conscription' ( US "" the Draft " ) was used . Although sometimes aggressively "encouraged " as was the case in more recent conflicts , it was a legal contract and sweetened by a bounty which I believe at that time was £3:0s:0d . This bounty ( as well as their own convictions) encouraged a great number of colonial British to join prior to hostilities and also offered to freed slaves ( some 4000 I believe) that resulted during the conflict. The colonials post war formed the 1st American Regt. within the British Army after losing their status as US Americans , those that survived the reprisals that is . The 1st American still survived incorporated into another Regiment right up until the shameful disbanding and reformation of the British Army a couple of decades or so ago .

All the commentors are clearly clueless, as is Philbrick. Some comments are absurd. Arnold saved and essentially won the revolution with his victories at Valcour Island and Saratoga. The so-called Founding Fathers mistreated the Continental Army soldiers, using the excuse they feared if the Army had too much power another Cromwell, the British general who overthrew the British Parliament, would result. He was not paid at all for three years, suffered permanent disabilities, and paid for his soldiers’ supplies, until he was essentially bankrupt. Because of Washington’s incompetence, politicians like Joseph Reed wanted to replace Washington. Washington relied on and defended Arnold when he was mistreated by the tyrants in Philadelphia. Arnold, who was close to Washington, was an easier target for the Washington haters in Philadelphia. Arnold was so disabled, after Saratoga, he requested that Washington allow him to serve on as a privateer, on a ship, would have allowed him to earn money to support his families if he captured British ships. But it was Washington he placed Arnold in a terrible position as the military governor of Philadelphia. Arnold had no money but was fined 1000 pounds without committing any offense. I am a board-certified psychiatrist, and Arnold had no clear personality disorder. He was clearly a victim.

By the very nature of being human , we all are flawed. The seeming laser focus on Washington's flaws ignore his extreme courage and leadership capabilities. In the 21st century we feel so compelled to knock down our Founding Fathers while understating the courage and sacrifice they made for the sake of others.
