    I just divided my beautiful, huge peace lily plant that has been in the same pot/soil since 2017. It was almost all root and not much soil. I divided it into 3 good size peace lily plants about 5 hours ago and they are doing fine so far.. I was terrified of doing it and I hope they flourish now. Thanks for the video. It helped me be brave enough .

    • @UIExtensionFJPRW
      @UIExtensionFJPRW 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for your question. All oak trees (red and white oaks) have tap roots, lateral roots, and root hairs. Tap roots grow down from the center of the trunk to about 3-5 feet, while lateral roots grow at a depth of about 18 inches but can spread out up to hundreds of feet.

    Amazing information however I came upon this video via my deep dive into organic cannabis cultivation so I must mention you would NOT want to use perlite or vermiculite for a no till or reusable living soil blend. Those minerals break down or float to the top of soil over time! For aeration pumice, red/black lava rock or zeolite can be used as an inert mineral for long term aeration.

    What about drainage? I thought Basil needed like a layer of rocks in the earth to promote drainage.

    • @UIExtensionFJPRW
      @UIExtensionFJPRW ปีที่แล้ว

      Great questions. Rocks or small gravel make a great layer at the bottom of indoor pots that you don’t put drain holes into. The pot that we used for our basil had drain holes and was going to be kept outside or inside with a catch pan underneath. Basil typically likes moist soils, unlike lavender which is typically potted in small gravel, perlite, or other well drained material. uh oh so what if i used garden soil for potted plants. im giving them fair space though

    • @UIExtensionFJPRW
      @UIExtensionFJPRW ปีที่แล้ว

      There are a few reason garden or yard soil is not the best choice for a potted plant. Garden soil or yard soil is heavier than potting soil, so air can't travel well in the pot. Yard soil also retains water longer, leading to root rot and causing your plant to die. Also, garden/yard soil is not sterile, so you could introduce disease or pests to your houseplant. Our horticulture educator said that you can repot the plant with a soilless mix (combination of potting soil, coir, peat moss, sand, vermiculite, or perlite) for the best health of your plant.

    Quite a bit of misinformation in this video that can, and will be misconstrued as positive facts unfortunately.. eg. Leachate has been proven not to be good in your garden as it most likely harbours pathogens. Peat moss is not a renewable product, is antimicrobial and should be avoided at all costs. Coco Coir takes decades to break down, is also antimicrobial and not to mention it usually travels from overseas. I’m very disappointed as I was assuming that your webinars were more scientific based research and not TH-cam researched. 😖

    Still in the beggining of the video but would you say wermicompost also acts as an inoculent? Introducing the bacteria and fungi into the soil to help breakdown unavailable nutrients in the soil?

    • @UIExtensionFJPRW
      @UIExtensionFJPRW ปีที่แล้ว

      Vermicompost and other types of compost contain various microorganisms. They contribute to soil health and enhance the soil food web, which has a positive effect on plant health. So it is possible that vermicompost can help speed-up nutrient breakdown and encourage soil life. Providing adequate organic matter can also help prevent nitrogen being “tied-up” by soil microorganisms. Here is a link to a handout from The Center for Regenerative Ag at CSU Chico. www.csuchico.edu/regenerativeagriculture/_assets/documents/fact-sheets/compost-inoculants-fact-sheet.pdf

    • @UIExtensionFJPRW
      @UIExtensionFJPRW ปีที่แล้ว

      Our Horticulture Educator Kim Rohling recommends using the National Wildlife Federation native plant finder tool at www.nwf.org/nativeplantfinder/plants. First select your zipcode. There is a butterfly icon which is ranked by the number of butterfly and moth species that use them as host plants for their caterpillars. You would want to see if the plant you desire can grow in the conditions of your site so check your soils, moisture and sunlight exposure.

    Before the internet I never fed my worms. They were laying eggs and turning sand and backwoods material into good dirt but I didn't realize they were so skinny until the food started. Now I feed them and they are fat and sassy. My wormbins were kiddy pools with 3 or 4 holes 2" from the bottom so rains won't drowned them. I also plant whatever I want kale, short carrots, herbs, turmeric, ginger, etc in these kiddie pools and get great products. It helps to be in Florida. And when we dip down to the 20° temps the worms leave behind their eggs and the eggs hatch when the soil warms up.

    The knots shown in the video are caused by wasp gall. Pin oaks are susceptable to a variety of small wasps that lay their eggs on the leaves and in the stems resulting in a knot.

    I have mold. On cardboard also?

    • @UIExtensionFJPRW
      @UIExtensionFJPRW ปีที่แล้ว

      Mold growth can be a common and natural occurrence in vermicomposting bins. Like the worms, many types of fungi work to break down food waste. Barring any allergies and depending on the exact type of mold, it is not typically harmful to you or the worms. The mold may indicate over-feeding the worms or not burying the food deeply enough in the bin. If you are experiencing problems because of the mold, I would recommend removing all molded products in the bin and disposing of them, reduce the amount of food given each week or increase the number of worms in your bin. Here is a great resource from our friends at University of Florida Extension. nwdistrict.ifas.ufl.edu/hort/category/vermicompost/

    Great video! I have a few questions though. If my seed needs 1 month of cold stratification, do I need to time this process so that after the one month in the refrigerator, it is immediately time to plant the seeds outdoors? Or, can I remove them from the refrigerator after one month and store them in a cool, dark dry location until time to plant outdoors? Should I remove them from the damp environment? I cannot seem to find the answer to these questions. Thanks.

    • @UIExtensionFJPRW
      @UIExtensionFJPRW ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tracey. Some plants need cold stratification to break the dormancy cycle. Seeds that need cold stratification should be stratified for the appropriate amount of time and then immediately planted into pots or directly outdoors if the weather permits. If you want to store the seeds, I recommend waiting to stratify them until you are ready to use them. The article below provides some more information about seed stratification. extension.illinois.edu/blogs/good-growing/2022-01-27-seed-stratification-what-seeds-require-cold-treatment

    • @UIExtensionFJPRW

      Hi Rochelle, according to Douglas W. Tallamy in his book, The Nature of Oaks (p. 45) many oaks send their roots deep enough that they do not lift up hardscape.

  • @gnarmarmilla
    @gnarmarmilla 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sir, you recommend spraying poison onto the invasive plants…glyphosate is poisonous to living organisms. With all due respect, this is stupid and lazy. We must not be so lazy but we should be in good health, eat good diets and go attack invasive species with good ol muscle, human ingenuity and strength. Thank you very much for the information, I was wondering if I should not plant burning bush on my property because I live near a small patch of forest along the kaskaskia river in southern Illinois. Burning Bush can probably help mushrooms to survive no?

    • @UIExtensionFJPRW
      @UIExtensionFJPRW 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment. There are non-herbicidal management options for invasive species control, and Extension would be happy to provide input or answer any questions you may have. In terms of burning bush, it is a known invader that has the potential to reduce native species diversity in Illinois natural ecosystems. Research has shown that the vast majority of ornamental cultivars of burning bush are capable of producing viable seed. While birds do not tend to prefer burning bush fruit, it is occasionally eaten so ornamental plants do have the potential to contribute to the spread of this species into natural areas. The recommendation is to select a different species to plant if you are concerned about burning bush moving into the Kaskaskia river bottomland. If you have additional questions, feel free to contact Chris Evans at cwevans@illinois.edu.
