Salvation is indeed Through Grace, By Faith - nothing is brought to the table EXCEPT the sin which necessitated the brutalization and death of our Lord (Is 53:5-6, Eph 2:8-9) (CCC 601, 616, 622 & 1987) Many professors of faith that are not possessors of saving faith (sa 9:23, Ezek 33:31, Matt 15:7-9) (CCC 144) Knowing and acknowledging Jesus is an inherent given of of all creation (James 2:19) But knowing and having an intimate relationship are different things (Matt 7:21-23) (CCC 151 & 259) Examine your soul to determine if your faith is genuine and salvific (2 Cor 13:5) (CCC 162) 1. Love for Jesus (1 john 4:2-3, 4:15, 5:4-5) (CCC 1993) 2. Love manifested in obedience (1 john 2:3-6, 3:23-24, John 14:15) (CCC 1447) 3. Love for people of God (1 John 2:9-11, 3:10, 3:14-15, 4:7-8, 4:16, 4:20, John 13:35) (CCC 2196) Each individual will stand before God to be judged according to their own actions. (Rm 14:12) (CCC 1021)

I hate this line of reasoning. We either go to heaven or hell when we die, and yes, it’s pretty important to get that right. That’s what people are asking. “How do I avoid going to hell?” After that, then you can worry about the rest of it. And you might say, “that’s not necessary, as long as you’re making an effort and your heart is in the right place. If you’re trying your hardest you’ll be fine anyway.” But that’s not true. You NEED the foundational doctrine in order to understand that salvation is through faith in Jesus to forgive your sins, not by anything you do. If you don’t understand that, your effort will be for nothing. Also, the Bible says that the heart is wicked. It’s only by the transformation through the Holy Spirit that our hearts become right with God, and if we haven’t met the minimum criteria for salvation, we don’t have that. You have to start somewhere, and the wisest decision is to start with what’s centrally important - the minimum requirements. Otherwise you’ll be like other people, starting with good works and Sunday pretense, and you won’t even know that you aren’t saved. The critical issue is that when people hear this question, they assume it means “I will only ever do the minimum - please sign off on that”. But in reality, there are many reasons someone could be asking that question, and often times it’s more like, “I don’t know where to start, I don’t know what’s important, I don’t know how to structure my understanding of Christianity”. So when you say something like “that’s a bad question, either commit 110% right now or don’t bother”, it’s completely unhelpful. People don’t know HOW to commit, they don’t know WHAT they’re committing to. You feel good about yourself, because you say “they would’ve been lukewarm, and I spat them out of my mouth”. But that is GOD’S role, not yours.

Unfortunately, this whole discussion overlapped with neoliberalism! We live life like a Netflix special a great deal of effort and energy goes into something that is consumed in an hour. We have moved from a society where the production of things last a long time to instantaneous consumption of a product. A lot of what goes on in society is ephemeral and the solidarity that went on in the society in say the 1970's is no longer there. We have to work hard at solidarity now as we become much more individualistic, much more isolated. That is what neoliberalism is all about isolating the individual. At this time we are also beginning to understand that we were starting to have an environmental problem with consumption of resources. The economic model is not working but in changing it we have to look also at all the elements that neoliberalism has entrenched into our global society: # Our daily life # Our mental perceptions # Our technology # Our social relations # Identifying that production is not just about things but production of a whole way of life; from ecological and environmental to how cities are structured; the role of our institutions; governance and legislation etc.
