Connecting to the Internet from 1987!
Getting older machines on the Internet is nothing new, but it sure is a ton of fun. We take a computer and NIC from 1987 for a cruise on the information superhighway, and see how useful an 8086-powered machine could be as a web server.

Restoring a rare PC's Limited 286
มุมมอง 1.6K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
PC's Limited was Michael Dell's first company and brand name. Their 286 model was the fastest of its kind in 1986, and we restore this legend back to working condition.... with a few sparks along the way.
Load OS2/Warp 4 on it
People live without "Prompt $p$g" ???? How can you live like that?
You forgot the html body
Its not called etsy , it just etc ffs
No its not insane nor is it amazing. Most ppl did this in the 90s as well when running dos by default. Nothing new
Yeah wattcp is the best, beats mtcp way more
Well change the default its since it contlics with the serial port
Your test with mTCP is using a much smaller document (22x smaller), and that will impact request times given the slowness of the machine. Would be great to see a comparison with the same content being served in both. I'm guessing mTCP still wins out but it might be a closer race.
Great point.. I didn't think it would make much of a difference at the time, but didn't really consider just how slow the machine is. I'll give ez-nos2 another try with the smaller file to see if there's a noticeable difference. Thank you!
This brings me good memories of working at computer shop in 2000 we'd get these old girls in (sorry if that offends, I just like treating electronics as an object of satisfaction) my boss was tripped out how I managed to boot load win95 off a network server for a fast install. He always did things manually.
I do remember setting those jumpers- mostly for IRQs! In those days, used a lot of HP and 3Com NICs.
I didn't know the existance of apache benchmark, I'm going to use it to test my web servers!! amazing video
usually in today web apps you dont really need to test the web servers since the bottleneck won't be serving the pages but running the apps that it hosts, so expect the javascript side or the application or database side to be the bottleneck for users.
I recently picked up a and restored a Model 25 8086, safe to say it’s currently my go to to dial up BBSes with my WiModem via Tandy DeskMate Telecom app. ❤
Surprised you didn't ftp over a better text editor while you were at it. Really cool job! Would be fun to see what the most complex website you can host on the machine is. I'd imagine it would have to be only html and css based. Basically everything done on the client side. Though I bet you could host some basic imagines. Also, image using it as a smart home controller like thing? Using simple GET and POST requests on a webpage, and then using the serial port to send commands to something? I mean, the only reason that would be cool is because it's an old machine, but that's a good enough reason for me! There is, for some reason, python for DOS which might be something you could use. I'd imagine it would run pretty poorly, but still. Basically, forcing it to do things it was never intended to do is always fun!
python is one of the slowest languages on the planet for the machine code it produces, and it also has a complex and slow interpreter. Don't think it would fit well on an 8086.
yeah @22:13 the command you want there is rename instead of "move" you just rename the file to a different directory (:
Hahah thanks.. nothing humbles me faster than an ancient version of DOS
I think the eznos web server could perform better if you gave it the same index.htm as the mTCP web server was using.
it would be cool to due this thru there serial port!
I still have a storage bin of parts from the 80’s and 90’s, when I’d work on a machine, or retire one, I’d scavenge or keep stuff in it. There must be 5000 jumpers in it.
If the memory doesn't fail me, MCGA is compatible with 640x480 monochrome and 320x200x256 colors... I think.
I remember these PS/2 computers. I had one of the monitors and it was just a bit finicky to start: You had to use a hairdryer to warm it up before it would fire up lol
Hahah
edlin skillz paid off!
I worked with one of those, and an SCO Linux box to move ANI from the T1 to our Sun servers at WebTV. I still work on IT operations. Last week I had to work around a bug by downgrading from 100 gig Ethernet to 25 gig. The bandwidths are just too big to even comprehend now!
The high vis line cracked me up. Look up Telstar Logistics for a laugh.
I wish I could snag those HP servers, I am in NC for the next couple of weeks too.
OS/2 operating system, or NT4 would be appropriate I think
Fun fact: every time you bleep something, you're just drawing more attention to it.
3D print a new cover. Do it in sections.
Ive got a HP/Compaq 3RU server in storage. Has the scsi 320 and everything. Dual 733mhz Pentium III and I think a 1gb of RAM Edit, I believe it might be a 733mhz not 1ghz.
Ha...I usually jump at those in clt...the week I was away on vaca... nice find!
5:55 TIL that TÜV Süd (safety certification) has a USA headquarter, I always thought they only operated in germany :o
I ran a renegade website in the 80s when I was a freshman in highschool. I started with telegard. Renegade was just modified and improved telegard source code.
i would install windows nt 4.0 server on it
What a sad thing to see. I would suggest installing OS/2 Warp Server.
IBM branded hard drives surviving any more shock than a sneeze is mind blowing. I guess they built the entire chassis as a sacrificial shock absorber for the hard drives.
I had something similar but it was a single CPU and it ran NetBSD just fine. In your case I don't know about the network drivers, for those particular cards.
Having personally dealt with stuff like that I think there should be a special hell for people who don't know how to package things and ship them.
While it may not have been popular back then due to Internet connection speed limitations in some countries, I did daydream of having Windows NT 4 Terminal Server set up with some old Windows 95 and NT 4 software (and/or games) to let people remote in and explore. However, following suggestions from other viewers who commented here, I'm going to recommend Windows NT 4 Server with BackOffice instead.
At least the hard drive works! But learn NetWare!
I had a few IBM 325's (dual Pentium Pro 200s) back in the day, still miss those machines, they were absolutely bulletproof. I ran Windows NT on them and used them as a domain controller and file servers.
Very cool, I ran a Doom themed BBS on renegade but I was only 13 yrs old so not really knowing what I was doing other then changing colours and menus. Would be neat to go into a technical deep dive on how this all worked.
Experiment with Unix or BSD? Maybe for kicks and giggles Windows NT 3.51?
good ol' Novell Netware.
You could keep the Novell and make it work. Or, NT 3.51 server or NT 4 server
really love how you guys act like it's a nuclear reactor your taking apart and activating. really makes it seem like a lot of drama but it's not.
Somehow I feel like those generic, bland off-white PC cases are gonna make a comeback soon.
Play Fortnite on it
lemme guess. y’all ordered this off ebay.
I would contact the seller and the postal service used. This is straight up destroying history
NT4
I have an Atari 800 that arrived in a very similar state. 😱😬
Some super glue and baking soda and she'll be alright
