Forging a Roman Gladius
มุมมอง 39K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Documenting the making of a Pompeii style Roman Gladius from forging to finish! This sword is a re-creation of an actual sword type used by Roman Soldiers in the town of Pompeii. The town was destroyed by a violent eruption of nearby Mount Vesuvius. Four gladius swords were excavated, matching this style. The grip was originally completed using “Holly” type wood, but I used elk antler to make i...

How long did it take you to get everything done?
@@Order66283 I made it over a five day period.
@ nice I’m slowly but surely gathering things I need to blacksmith I eventually would like to forge a Gladius
@Order66283 Awesome! That's exactly how I started. I slowly bought everything I needed to get started.
Heck yeah, I’ve been wanting to work on it for years so hopefully I can start shortly I just need the forge. But awesome job on the videos I’m looking forward to watching your future projects
@Order66283 Great, good luck with your future projects! Thank you very much!
I was looking up explosive claymores but this is way cooler😂
@@willgund779 Thanks, I appreciate that! 😂
I was mistaken when I said that the Gladius evolved from the Spatha. Spatha replaced the Gladius after more use of Cavalry was used by the romans
I have one and I love it
Beautiful sword. Can’t wait for mine to be ready!
@@paulkouri7786 Thanks! Yours is going to be awesome!
One of the best swords ever made!
Awesome job adding the “habaki” Akira Toriyama drew on it, knowing very little about western swords as he did. Came out great!!
@@Kratos_God_of_50_BMG Thank you very much!
Do you have a website?I'd like to purchase a roman gladius.
@danielsonguedespontes1729 Yes, here is the link right to the gladius. www.winterbornblades.com/shop-winterborn/romulus-roman-gladius
Admirable travail 🤗
Elven huh? Yeah looks about the style of blade Meadros would have used considering he had only one hand. By the way love your shop, maximizing use of space, and efficient keep up the great work!
@thisishrsesht31 Thank you very much! I was trying to go with a very basic elven blade with no frills. That's my old shop, but I tried to maximize every inch of space since it was really small. The new shop is almost four times the size with a lot of new equipment. Thanks again!
Perfection
@@RyanG0899 Thank you!
This is a great Work, where do you learn smithing swords, because im realy interested in this und its will be very Kind of you to answer my Questionen.
@user-oo8do3ju1n I learned everything online. I suggest you join bladesmithsforum.com. There you will find tons of threads about it. You can ask questions and knowledgeable people will answer. I hope this helps.
Good video, would have liked a little more detail, quick is not always better .
@paulbuzza4334 Thank you for the feedback. The videos I'm working on now have more detail. Stay tuned.
What is this white wood you used to make the hilt for this Gladius Hispaniensis
@@florianweinbacher6272 I used elk antler, but traditional gladius handles are made of holly wood.
Bonus Points for properly PEENING the pommel instead of using some stupid screw on crap like half these TH-cam "smiths" do.
@@xxwes997xx Thank you! I prefer peened pommels as well.
That gem in the middle and sword is beautiful
@@DabackwoodzBoy Thank you very much!

Right on. Do your swords come sharpened / battle ready?
@AH-ml2jl They sure do!
How much would that cost to buy? I know they are all custom but if I ordered the same thing what would it cost
@PenguinHoops Send me an email at info@winterbornblades.com and I'll get you pricing. Thanks!

Thank you very much!
That's a beautiful sword . I'd be happy to own it .
Thank you very much!
Great forge. What are the dimensions?
Thanks! It's the Tobasco model made by Chile Forge. Dimensions 6 5/8" W × 6" H × 12" L
@@winterbornblades thanks for the reply. I’m going to try to forge one.

Had a great day this weekend on the 1 Day knife making course Steve. Thanks for the hospitality and for sharing some of your vast experience. For anyone wanting to know what it's like to craft a knife or sword, check out Steve at Winterborn Blades and take one of his courses. You won't regret it, and you'll come home with a great blade at the end of the course! 🙂
Thanks Gary! It was great having you and John in the workshop. Thanks again!
This is just a stunning sword. I love it. Definitely subscribing for content like this 👍🏼
Thank you so much, I appreciate it!
Esta hermosa bro donde la compraste? es de las mejores replicas que e visto hasta ahora 😊😊😊
Thank you. Go to www.winterbornblades.com
Bom trabalho ! Ficou linda parabéns!
Just wonderful what is the best edge angle for these Roman sword? 45deg 30deg or 25 deg ?
Thank you! That's tough to say. It all depends on the thickness of the blade and how wide it is. But the angle will change from the guard towards the tip because the blade thickness tapers.
Gladius hispaniensis. Espada corta hispana
Absolutely beautiful
Thank you!
Now that is so cool! Id cut my wedding cake with that 👀
1:00 your hand goes any faster you won't need a furnace
🤣
Wonder where the Roman’s got their cold rolled flat stock from?
una obra de arte.. es la mejor espada de todas
Forging a 20" x 2" x 1/4" blade by hand would be a daunting task and very time consuming. I'd' worry about how much carbon I burned out of the steel be the time i was done.
Forging is definitely very tiring, that's why I invested in a hydraulic press to help speed up the process. From what I've read and have been told by other bladesmiths, the carbon loss happens on the surface of the steel. The affected parts are sanded off after the heat treating process as the shape is refined on the belt grinder.
What was the process for the Romans who did not have a steel factory supplying ready-made steel? One assumes they had to forge their own.
Back then, they would make their own steel by adding carbon to their iron ore during the forging pocess.
Did you know that the gladius is originating from Spain as Spatha
Have you ever done a poured bronze casting of sword, axe, knife, etcetera before?
I have not.
Glamdring, the Foe Hammer!
That was exactly my inspiration for this sword!
In that case, beautifully done work!

That's amazing
Thank you very much!
The sword that founded an empire........Absolutely beautiful...... I'd love one . ❤
Thank you very much!
Gladius is just the latin word for sword. What you made was a Gladius Hispaniensis. It is a Celtiberian sword used by the roman army. Really cool build though. The handle you made is beutiful.
Thank you very much, I appreciate it!
I would argue I doesn’t have much of a leaf shape I think it looks more like a gladius Pompeii myself
@@kharga9046 You know what? I see it. You're probably right.
@kharga9046 Yes exactly, it's a Pompeii Style gladius. I wrote that in the video description, but let's be honest, no one reads those lol. I do want to make a mainz style gladius with the leaf shape one day.
