I agree it’s perplexing

Okay so correct me if I'm wrong, but just a thought -- do we like the way a piece of media can show characters/story through two lenses (like the dark vs vibrant color themes), and then explore the characters themselves that way? Because one of my favorite dynamics is the Raven & Starfire, Daria & Quinn, or the Nanas (Osaki & Komatsu/Hachi), or literally anything you can think of where you've got these two character types. It's easier for me (and from what it sounds like; you too) to relate to the darker, cooler one, but over a long enough series you'll get to see those stereotypes/tropes reverse or subvert themselves! And as long as it's done well, it's like my favorite thing in the world. Like seeing the bright, bubbly, positive one have to come to terms with the harsh rules of reality. This can manifest in so many ways and we've all seen some form of it. Like Starfire having to show sadness and solemnity, or even helplessness depending on the situation. Or Daria's annoying younger sister, Quinn Morgendorfer, coming to terms with the plastic/superficial nature of the world she lives in. And you just FEEL the sadness in her face (throughout the series)... and we as the viewers completely relate to her sadness and depression. And like... personally, I find that character (the once charming, bouncy, bright, red or pink-haired of the pair so to speak) to be WAYYY more interesting once you get to see them in those lights. Whenever you have this trope (whatever it's called, kinda like opposites attract maybe?) -- by default I like the darker character more, and the brighter one is usually annoying or insufferable to me in some cases. But by the end of a story or once the dust has sort of settled and you've watched or read a bunch of it, it's like my preferences have changed completely. And it feels wrong. Like I somehow relate to the open/charismatic one more at that point. Like despite growing up as a glasses-wearing, by-the-book nerd, somehow I relate 10x more to Quinn than I would to her smarter but socially-awkward sister Daria. It's seeing those happy/perfect characters when they're low that really seals the deal for me. Anyway sorry for writing a book. And those stories in pokemon and arcane are so true. And even when this trope is used in stuff that's kinda bad I'm a sucker for it so if I see it I'm into it from the beginning no matter how awful the show/movie/game/manga/whatever might be otherwise
