Haha when it comes to people staying the night outside your store from 6pm the night before, when RSD25 official rolls around, that’s what time I’m going to my shop to get in line.
Those days are long gone for me but I will be cheering you on
good plan!
Enjoyed the video, thanks guys! 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Thanks for taking the time to watch
Enjoyed your show this week. But then I enjoy your show every week. It was a nice RSD. Take care art
Thanks for watching Art
Great show as always, Gentlemen! When it comes to 2025 RSD, I'd like to see a 30th Anniversary vinyl release of the "Empire Records" soundtrack, with all the extras on the deluxe CD - and hey, maybe pair it with a soundtrack to the new musical based on the movie. I'd still like to see Bad 4 Good's "Refugee" and Karen Carpenter's solo album on vinyl too. I've only been following RSD since 2020, and the one "way too expensive" for me that I missed out was Orange Mountain Music's reissue of the "Koyaanisqatsi" score from Philip Glass - love that movie, love the music, no one had it around here or at any the sites I usually order from. Bummer. And i'm not paying $150 for it. Thanks for the shoutout, Professor! Jim, thanks again for coming on FYMM last Monday, it was a blast! And hey - those of us who still use X call it "ExTwitter"...he heh...
TC, I agree with soundtracks. Too many great ones came out especially in the 90s and 00s but are only available on CD. There does seem to be a market for all of these kind of album. I hope you do find what your looking for and again my thanks for helping me out
Thomas Dolby is a vain man. He wears a rug.
10 things i hate about you came out a few years ago in the US. It was a walmart exclusive and i own it. It was $15 . So i just cant see anyone willing to spend such a ridiculous amount on it. And the Hi fidelity was a RSD release for black friday over in europe on 11/29
So, it's not only tool who put disgusting mark ups on their records.
Couldnt' make the live show, prepping stuff for my wife's birthday, heh heh...glad you had a good RSD BF, hopefully your Small Business Saturday will be just as good!
Thanks, TC!
Congratulations on 2k subs 🎉
how did i end up here?
...blew in on an ill wind?
Sorry I missed the livestream, was doing some advance cooking for tomorrow with the wifey....🙂 Great to "meet" your kids, hope you have a great Thanksgiving and an awesome RSDBF and SBS!
thanks for checking it out after the fact! Happy Thanksgiving to you as well!
Anyone know what year this is from?
Great show! 🙂
Wilco seem to be releasing stuff non-stop none of it interesting enough to warrant more than one listen - I'm joking I buy them and never listen to them, once they Chose "YHF" as their biggest album and released an outrageous number of formats of it I stopped caring - just give me one version of "Misunderstood" without the intro and mid-section noise and I'll be happy - maybe I should have gone with the Sun Volt guy.
that RICHARD CHEESE looks fun
Are there any taxes on things you may leave to family, friends, or anyone? Let's say you have a collection worth $100,000 and you leave it to another friend who is a collector. Does the government tax that person on the property left to them when they get it? I also wonder if a person, who has power of attorney, is able to make all decisions and not just financial or medical decisions regarding the person's collection if they were not able to do so themselves before passing away? I guess another way to ask the question would be can the person with power of attorney change a will or something like that before the person the wheel is for dies? I've seen other videos on this same topic but this one is the best. It really delves into the topic with qualified help telling you what needs to be done! Great video! Brian in Fort Worth 🎶
Looks great!
Sorry I missed you live this week, something going on...watch out for that Carlson guy, he's tricky, LOL!
LOL! He's alright...!🤣
A relative flogs them off.
True story xD
Steve, have you seen a video of Glass Beams playing live? Wild masks. So cool!
There’s a cool thing called NOKBOX (next of kin), that lets you organize EVERYTHING- it comes with all the labeled folders, in a nice big box, with a little book for passwords, and pouch for keys, passports, etc, and you can watch videos how to get started. Very nice for whoever has to go thru your stuff.👍🏻
This is probably the most important subject that’s not talked about in the VC. This was incredibly informative, helpful, and valuable, that said, it could have felt less like a seminar to buy the bottom guys services. And if he doesn’t think that at all and doesn’t see how the way he words a lot of his sentences are based on sales pitch techniques than he’s a greater salesman than any of us can imagine. Not even kidding I’m sold, but I’m somehow slightly resentful
Babbling for the sake of babbling 🤣
While I might change my mind, I'm one of those awful people who will leave the problem of my collection to my daughter. Luckily, I only have one child, so no fighting over the proceeds - she gets everything. She also has two masters and a PHD, so I'm guessing she's bright enough to know what to do with it. I also doubt she'll be sentimentally attached to any of it. Dr. Darby will probably find someone she can trust to sell it to en masse. I do have a large Canadiana collection that I will probably separate out, though. This includes many recordings of churches and high schools (from the 60s and 70s) and private press artists (mostly from Ontario). Those, I'll probably find a home for as they have historic significance and I probably own one of only a few copies in existence.
Jim and Steve: great to have two Michiganders talking records. I too used to go to Flat Black and Circular in East Lansing when went to MSU and grew up close to Ann Arbor absent to Wazoo and Schoolkid’s. Jim if I am ever in your area in I will stop into your store. Go Lions!
This is my written and signed legal document saying dibs I got here first my brother didn’t watch the podcast
We've checked with our attorneys. There IS legal precedent in the case of Dibs vs. Snooze Ya Lose. Your claim checks out!
Spinclean! the best vinyl assessory I ever bought. I have bought many albums that looked nearly unplayable and cleaned up to surprisingly good
hi Steve, Jim and Todd. great topic and video. It gave me some good thoughts. Thanks for that. Take care.
Why does it matter, I'll be dead. I may care about my records, but it doesn't mean anything when it's over. Whether any of my family or friends want my collection I don't know. I've told people just sell them for whatever and move on. Or keep them but in the end why does it matter.
I've willed to my sister and her husband
looked for this record for years to no avail, so thx
I might get my records made into a casket.
My collection goes to Radio Wasteland records.
It looks and sounds very good on TH-cam 👍
thanks!!
My Mother used to do Ads for Goldmine. Goldmine was created by Krause Pulblications out of my small town, Iola WI, with a population of 1200 people. They did music, coin, car, and card collecting guides. The founder, Chet Krause, was a big car guy and established one of the biggest car shows in the Midwest. He was a really amazing man. My sister got in a car accident where another kid got trapped under her car while he jumped out of a ditch on a go-kart, the accident was found to be the kids fault. Chet called my parents while he was in New York on business to make everything was okay. I would often go to the HQ and they had all of the latest editions of their magazines. When I was younger I would get the baseball magazines, get all my cards from the bin I had them in, and price them. Later I would grab Goldmine just to read the articles. It was 1995, I was 13, I started listening to the local college rock station WWSP. I got more into the music that was not normally played on the radio. My Mom went to the writers of Goldmine and asked what would be something new and different that I might like given my new taste. My Mom gave me Post by Bjork, and Dummy by Portishead. If it weren't for some of the writers at Goldmine I probably wouldn't be the music nerd I am now. Love the pod keep it up gents.
Night of the Living Dead!!!!!

Discogs largely ruined the hobby, few treasures left to find
It sure changed everything along with the internet where now all information is shared. Definitely made it more expensive
I agree that Discogs changed things - but not universally bad. Yes more expensive, but more available. Lately, I have been more focused on my local stores (3 that I go to) and each owner has their own niche and I often find records that they don’t fully understand and I get good deals. Also so many of the records I have are off of Discogs that I wouldn’t otherwise have. In the end crate digging and getting to know and engaging with the record store owners is what is fun and leads to finds.
Hey Jim and Steve. Great show as usual. Cheers
Thanks!!
Bobby, thanks for taking the time to watch
Fun episode. I started out with an index card database like Steve, then I added a spreadsheet like Jim, and then I added the Discogs cataloging feature like both you guys. I did use the Osborne price guides, and still have a copy of the 2nd edition, but they served more as reference as to what was in existence rather than the value of things. I do remember scouring through Goldmine (and DISCoveries magazine), squinting at the listings for albums to send off for. Now Discogs is invaluable. Thanks, Chris
Thanks! crazy to think about all the work we used to put into maintaining our collections!!
Chris, god bless you for having an index card system, I knew there was a reason why I liked you! Oh those were the days. If the flood had not happened I would probably still have it along with discogs
Yes, I use discogs for purchasing and catalog my collection. I am always finding things i did not catalog, like today when Steve mentioned Camper Van Beethoven i found that my 7" "take the skinheads bowling" was not cataloged! If we do not use the Discogs to sell things what would be the best way to sell?
outside of selling on discogs, I really couldn't say which might be the better direction to go for selling. I've never tried anything else.. (lucky to have The Wasteland as an outlet!!) When customers ask, I usually say to try selling locally through the likes of facebook marketplace. But most times, that can be very frustrating. That said, there are a few facebook groups which are dedicated to buying/selling records.. some even for specific genres. thanks for watching!!
I swear to god things disappear on discogs or it doesn’t save properly. I have that issue a lot and I’m positive I had put that record in the system.
Hey guys, great video. Every serious record collector will have albums in their collection that the consider total rubbish but will also never sell or throw then in the trash for any number of reasons.
oh, I've got more than a couple of those...!! lol
Peter, you are a 100% right, nostalgia is a big part of that
Have you ever seen that movie FM? I had never seen it before or even heard of it until a month or two ago. It just happened to pop up on my TV on TH-cam after whatever VC video I was watching ended. I enjoyed it just because of the throwback to the 1970s and the great music they had in it. Too bad it wasn't the real soundtrack you got though :-) Brian in Fort Worth 🎶
Hey Brian.. thanks for watching! and it has beenYEARS since I'd seen that film.. you're right, though.. great soundtrack! (the original one, that is...)
Hi Brian, thanks for taking time to watch and comment. I remember FM movie and that soundtrack was everywhere. I don’t remember seeing that in ages now. FM was special back then, playing whole sides of albums. It was very cool
Great issue - thanks guys. I was a Christgau's Record Guide (to start) and Trouser Press Record Guide (latterly) kinda guy before getting into the era's magazines, first Rolling Stone, then Spin, then the UK weekly papers. Did the same sort of thing - marked the records I had in the books. I also have "the List" - hand-written on lined paper - going back to the mid 1970s - in order of purchase, with little annotations for 'events' or things like trips, end of year. So old now, the paper is falling apart. Kinda like me. Never bothered putting it in a data base....regret that now... I think I can now scan it, and have some AI decode my handwriting, so maybe .....Anyhow, I enjoyed your chat, as always. cheers
Oh, meant to say - I've never really had access to good shops (bar ca. 1988-1992), so I used to buy from remote shops based on the ads in back of the more underground records. MIdnight Records in NYC used to do a killer line of bootlegs, all of which i still have. Eventually, started getting stuff from the UK - Alan's, Eastern Bloc, Sister Ray & Rough Trade - again based on mail order ads.....
thanks for watching! and very cool that you still have your old paperwork..! I no longer have any of my old lists. (maybe an old file on a backup drive somewhere?). would be cool to go back in time to see the progression of the collection...
Luke, in one of my Rolling Stones guide I also had a list of what I wanted to find. It was only a page but it was in that book until the flood took it away. Almost 40 years, wish I still had that, kind of cool thinking about a young 20 year old making his wish list
