The heart of old Singapore is basically what is now called the Central Business District, and runs along the river. Singapore has always been a port town. As the development of the island expanded, the government built new "cities" called Queenstown and Toa Payoh, which were kind of suburbs. Later, they actually built 3 more, Woodlands, Bulim, and Yio Chu Kang which were separated from Singapore City by agricultural area.
