MUSK OX Head to Head Play, Dalton Highway ALASKA males collide, winter shed June 2024
Three Muskox interacting on Arctic Tundra outside Deadhorse Alaska. Head --butting and running. You can see their winter shed blowing off in the breeze!
Musk ox are “harem breeders,” where one male mates with the entire herd of females and defends his position as the only breeder. The males battle for this dominant position through powerful head-to-head collisions. The defending male faces a line of challengers. One by one these challengers line up opposite the defender, lower their heads, and run full speed at him. The musk ox has a special protective surface on their heads. Right between their long curved horns, males have a plate of reinforced keratin (the same material that covers their horns) called a “boss”.

Bald Eagle swimming to shore with prey/ Bald Eagle Floundering /Crows waiting / Eagle grabs Gull
มุมมอง 6K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
I did not see the grab but I did hear and see the commotion. It was the sound of birds yelling and scattering that made me turn and look. A very long way off I saw the Eagle swimming towards the shore. I ran to get closer hoping to capture in video. Notice the crows lined up waiting for the Eagle to come ashore. Hard work landing the gull. RIP Gull. Nature ! Eagles can carry 3 pounds on average...
Eared Grebe (Podiceps nigricollis) breeding adults , nest building behavior, teamwork, Montana

Watched this pair for several minutes, in the rain. They began collecting algaes and plant materials and piling in one location. A bit of research revealed they build their nests like this. Their own little island. I will swing by again tomorrow and see if they continued to build after my departure. If yes, I will post a part II. Thanks for watching !

They are much smaller than Prairie Dogs. But, like Prairie Dogs they live in burrows, often in colonies. Eight to eleven inches in length , including tail. Round-tailed Ground Squirrels are diurnal ( active in the daytime). This female appears to be pregnant. Her gestation period is 28 days. An average of 5 pups are born in a litter.
Rare Bird Alert CATTLE TYRANT (Machetornis rixosa) Corpus Christi Texas March 2 2024

A long way from its native range of Brazil, Venezuela, and Colombia. The cattle tyrant had never before been seen north of Panama, about 2,600 miles south of Corpus Christi, until now ! First confirmed sighting was in Nov 2023. Did a storm bring it here or perhaps a cargo ship stowaway? We will likely never know. Traveling full time, Corpus Christi was directly on my path south. I decided to go...

it's a scavenger, the bird must have already died. It's a couple, the 2nd is probably his partner who comes to help him. Eagles live in pairs all their lives, they are faithful.

Yes they are opportunistic and eat carrion, but they certainly do hunt and kill fish and ducks as a main staple. Gull sitting on water too. And yes likely it's mate. They mate for life.

Because of the eagles wingspan and body type, the eagle cannot take off from the water surface. It is not swimming, it is floundering. No choice to do this - or drown.

@wilderness_bound, actually, the Podiceps genus is polyphyletic, seven extant species and a recently extinct species are all relocated to five separate genera, Potamopica for one extant species being the Red-Necked Grebe (Potamopica grisegena), Oreodytes for one extant species being the Hooded Grebe (Oreodytes gallardoi), Pliodytes for three recognized species being the Horned Grebe (Pliodytes auritus), the Eared Grebe (Pliodytes nigricollis), and the †Colombian Grebe (Pliodytes andinus), Dyas for two extant species being the Silvery Grebe (Dyas occipitalis) and the Junin Grebe (Dyas taczanowskii), and Podicephorus for one extant species being the Great Grebe (Podicephorus major), leaving the Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus) as the only extant member of the Podiceps genus.

This is a wonderful shot, there must be amble space and prey around for 2 different but closely related species to be found on the same roost. I’ve seen both compete in the wild and who wins the interaction depends on who is the bigger bird most of the time. Golden Eagles are slightly bigger on average but it’s very very close. Most I’ve seen are probably large females of similar size

It's a juvenile golden eagle, they have white on the tail but not fully white, the smaller beak, golden neck feathers and more uniform brown plumage show its not a juvenile bald, also the legs are feathered all the way to the feet on the golden eagle.
